R.I.P.- The Used June 4, 2007 16 out of 28 found this review helpful
yeah, the title might be a little dramatic but the used are pretty much nowhere to be found on here. i mean sure some of their trademark sounds are present on here but not many. i truly appreciate when bands evolve and experiment but i'm sorry...it just doesn't work for the used. the cd isn't horrible by any means it's just "mediocre".
after hearing their slightly lackluster sophmore album "in love and death", (except for about 4 exceptional songs)i was really pumped to hear their long-awaited third album hoping they would return to their roots like on thier debut which is a near perfect cd and a classic for the genre. wow, was i mistaken. the used claimed they've gotten heavier on this cd but where? thier are a few hardcore screams in some of the songs but the majority are overproduced, and just downright poppy and cliche. plus, the slow-paced songs/ballads on the album are awful, just plain awful with what it seems like forced emotion. all these things which aren't found on their stellar debut.
so for all these reviews on here that say if you like the used's first two albums, you'll enjoy this...don't believe it. i know that's my opinion but i truly don't see any comparison between the new and the old. even though i thought "in love..." was lacking, this is even worse. it's truly hard to believe this band is the same band that released their debut gem back in 2002. also, i have to criticize the lame/cliche/lacking lyrics. where are the poetic and emotional lyrics from their debut? seriously, i lost most of my respect for the band with one simple lyric "liar, liar, pants on fire". yeah, THE USED actually used that as a lyric, albeit in one of the heavier songs on the cd along with the unessacary swearing. what a shame...
the album too is very slick, courtesy of john feldman (come on, choose a different producer already). it sounds overproduced and catered to the radio with the poppiness and current trend of the dance beats/style. the thing is... the songs aren't even that catchy. i will give them some credit for experimenting and using strings while also incorporating swing and the big band sound into their style. sadly, it just doesn't work for them.
i've probably listened to their debut over 1,000 X (no, really)and i spin their 2nd album occasionally but i don't see myself listening to this album at all really. this album could blow-up later this year but i just don't see how it could possibly. sure the sales will do fine but as for raising the bar for music (or even for the band for that matter), definitely not. for me the used are drifting off into oblivion with their releases so i think i'm going to pretend the used are done releasing albums cuz it hurts to hear their new stuff when their older work is so great and is a work of art.
if i could, i would go back 2 wks and prevent myself from buying this album cuz it's really not worth the money. the only downloadable tracks worth listening to are the first 3 and "wake the dead". even if you're a hardcore used fan (like i use to be) and loved their debut, i would find it near impossible for you to appreciate this new release from them. it's just...disappointing altogether. i'll just remember the used back in 2002/2003 era when they were young, hungry, and still playing angsty and passionate music.
so with this release, i say goodbye and farewell to THE USED
The Used..another strong release. May 28, 2007 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
Brilliant. Anyone knowing me personally, know it's a rarity for me to grace an album with that title. With my CD collection nearing the thousand(s) mark it seems like after around 99-00 I couldn't for the life of me buy an album and enjoy it from start to finish, and to be honest, after buying The Used's "In Love and Death" I almost had to force my self to sit thru it at times, it didn't have that edge to it like the first release.
If you are a fan of the used for any release or even a single alone, PICK UP THIS ALBUM. The creative element on this album are remarkable..bringing glimpses of other Genres into it like swing, big band (Track 6/Paralyzed),electronic(The Bird and the Worm), and many other genres.
For true fans of their first release, particularly fans of the tracks "Blue and Yellow", "On my Own", and "Poetic Tragedy"; Lies for the Liars comes close to pegging the impact of those with songs of similar sound like "Smother Me" and "Find a Way"
Even though this album IS toned down a few notches due to Bert's inability to scream as he would want to anymore, in no way does that make this album less of a phenomenal release. Some people look to The Used for JUST that reason, then buy this album and try to down-talk it because of the lack of screaming. If you are a true The Used fan , you know that's not what this band is all about.
Wasted Effort. June 20, 2007 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
Face it: The Used needed to change. Sure, when they appeared on the scene in 2002 with their self-titled debut, they were a force to be reckoned with. All genre labelling aside, they were a rarity because they could back up their status with some great song-writing and beautiful musical moments, as best displayed on "Blue & Yellow" and "Poetic Tragedy." But this is 2007. Screamo has gone the way of rap-metal, meaning that it is horribly oversaturated and even the innovators are starting to sound like parodies. So it's not such a terrible thing for the boys from Utah (with a new drummer) to want to change things up and earn themselves some staying power. It's just that on "Lies For The Liars," the band's third effort, it just doesn't work.
I will have to state right off the bat that the bulk of this album is forgettable. We have the meaty, catchy tracks like "Pretty Handsome Awkward" and "The Ripper" which will satisfy the usual Used fan, but which provide no substance whatsoever. Elsewhere, they sound like they are trying to be a completely different band. "The Bird And The Worm," the first single, is the kind of drab, tuneless garbage you'd expect a band like Panic At The Disco to churn out. Likewise, "Liar, Liar" makes them sound like a heavy Fall Out Boy. Wipe the smile off your face, that is not a good thing.
I'll give them that "Earthquake," "Wake The Dead" and "Smother Me" do a decent job at updating their sound while at the same time pleasing the core fanbase, but much of this album seems bound and determined to eliminate The Used's personality. Too many times, on too many tracks, they sound like other bands. Instead of experimenting with their sound and turning out something new or at least fresh sounding, they seem to have taken the easy route, listened to what their peers were doing, and try to mimick and milk it for all it's worth. Thousands of eyeliner stained teens with hair in their face and their eyes glued to Fuse might find this to be a good album, but everyone else will leave disappointed.
Lies For The Liars - Best to Date? May 22, 2007 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
It's been three years since we've gotten a full length recording from Utah's `The Used' and the wait has been worth it. `Lies for the Liars' is a hard hitting tour de force for The Used and probably their best album to date. While their self-titled debut album remains my favorite in their catalogue, this new offering outshines their sophomore effort and is far and away their best crafted work to date. While some might call it overproduced, I feel the guys in the band and producer John Feldmann put a lot of effort into making a very clean sounding and interesting album. The Used continues to evolve in this release, experimenting with a more electric sound and expanding on styles they played with on `In Love and Death'.
The guys change it up with a good mix of song variety on the album. From the killer opening `The Ripper' with its beeps and boops and big verses fused with a hard guitar sound to the overly creepy yet enjoyable 'The Bird and the Worm', and the big ballad 'Find A Way', this release has a little something for any fan of the genre. Old school Used fans won't be disappointed with this album. While cutting out a lot of Burt's screaming that dominated their first release, this album rocks a little harder than their previous effort and is a thoroughly enjoyable listen from start to finish.
Comparisons to My Chemical Romance's 'The Black Parade' are going to be unavoidable, as Burt and the gang try to broaden their musical scope in much the same way Gerard and the My Chem. crew did with their album. The connections and gossip between the bands won't be going away any time soon but the music itself is what's important. The Used does a commendable job at crafting an album that proves they aren't a one trick pony and that shows that they aren't hiding in the shadow of My Chemical Romance.
Overall, Lies for the Liars is a hell of an album and Used fans will eat it up. Drummer Branden Steineckert's departure didn't hurt this release at all and the overall quality doesn't suffer from an original band member dropping out. While not perfect, 'Lies for the Liars' shows that the boys from Utah still have something to say and this album might make a quit a few people shut up and listen.
I enjoyed it. I'm not going to lie. Diversity in Sound. May 22, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Just like the title says, I enjoyed the album... and I have listened to it a few times. The band has changed quite a bit, but I like the change. There is less screaming, but when Bert does scream, it is pretty deep. And Bert even does some death metal screaming at one point, which was pretty awesome. Oh, and also, there are horns! It was a risk, but I think that it was for the best. The songs in which the horns are most prominent are in "Paralyzed" and "With Me Tonight".
I don't want to go crazy in analyzing the album... I just want to say that I liked it a lot. Also, The Used are different from the other mainstream alternative (emo) bands out there. I, for one, prefer the underground screamo post-hardcore genre. But The Used have always been one of my favorites.
Yep... that's all. If you like the Used, buy the album, you will not be disappointed. All the songs sound different, which is also important. And the hardest songs, would be "Pretty Handsome Awkward", "Wake the Dead" and "Liar Liar". And every song has a bridge that pretty much changes the entire song... there is a lot of diversity in each track.
Enjoy!
