Amazon.com As a survey of Toby Keith's first four recordings (not including the seasonal Christmas to Christmas), this set turns in some strong singles, making the case for the Okie singer-songwriter as one of the more traditionally minded of the '90s hat acts. Keith rarely devastates as a singer, but he never overreaches, and there's more than a bit of grit in his delivery of "Should've Been a Cowboy" and "He Ain't Worth Missing." His emotional triumph remains the obsessive "Who's That Man," in which Keith sees another man living the life he threw away. Keith also includes two songs not available elsewhere, complementing an appealing mainstream country set. --Roy Kasten

Getcha Some of Toby Keith's very best! January 17, 1999 35 out of 40 found this review helpful
Toby Keith emerged in 1993 with the autographical hit "Should've Been A Cowboy." The rodeo's loss is country music's gain, as Keith has been one of its most dependable hitmakers over the past six years. This collection specializes in relationship songs, be it humorous ("You Ain't Much Fun"), reflective ("We Were in Love"), or wishful ("Dream Walkin'"). Best of all is the duet with Sting on "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying" which hits divorce from a male perspective dead-on. Two new tracks provide some fresh variations on the Keith sound, with the lead-off single "Getcha Some" offering a dopey delivery reminiscent of the Beverly Hillbillies theme song ("Black Gold, Texas Tea"). It adds up to fourteen of the best of '90s country. Getcha Some today!
great variety of country music December 10, 1999 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
It's hard to believe that Toby Keith has already released a Greatest Hits album and it's hardly been 5 years since he started singing. I just don't see why he hasn't racked up on the awards for being such a good singer. He's probably the most underrated country singer right now. This is a real good album that deserves all the hype that it can get. It has most of his hits up to now including the new hit Getcha Some. They're all great songs and there's good variety in the songs. There's some like Should've Been A Cowboy that have catchy rhythms, some slow, meaningful songs like Me Too, and even some humorous songs like You Ain't Much Fun. Whatever kind of country you like, it's here. If your a country music fan, this will probably be a great album to add to your collection.
A superb collection of hits! January 5, 2003 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
Toby Keith is one of the most popular and talented country music singers today. He's had nine #1 hits so far and that number is sure to grow. "Greatest Hits, Volume One" features twelve of Toby's chart-topping hits and two new recordings ("Getcha Some" and "If A Man Answers"). Toby's first single (1993's "Should've Been A Cowboy") went to #1 and was named by Billboard magazine as the most played song of the 1990s in any genre. That's quite an accomplishment! Some of the outstanding songs on here are "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying" (a duet with Sting), "Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine On You," "Who's That Man," "Dream Walkin'" and "We Were In Love." Of course, there are some fun songs like, "You Ain't Much Fun" and "Big Ol' Truck." "Getcha Some," one of the previously unreleased songs, is very good! This is a must-have album for a Toby Keith fan or for somebody who enjoys excellent country music!
Great collection March 6, 2004 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is a really nice collection of Toby Keith's early music, while he was still with Mercury. In my opinion, the music on this album is a lot better than his current stuff with Dreamworks, when he became very popular. I just find it to be so pretentious and trying to prove something, but the music here is just honest and good. There are 12 hits and 2 new songs, "Getcha Some" and "If A Man Answers", the latter being the better of the two. It's too bad Toby Keith was the underdog with this music, because there is some really great songs here that never really got much acknowledgement from country radio, but it's their loss entirely. "Should've Been A Cowboy", "He Ain't Worth Missing", "A Little Less Talk And A Lot More Action", and "Wish I Didn't Know Now" all hail from his first self titled album. "You Ain't Much Fun", "Big Ol' Truck", "Who's That Man" come from his BOOMTOWN album. "Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine On You" and "Me Too" come from his 1996 album BLUE MOON. "Dream Walkin", "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying" and "We Were In Love" come from his DREAM WALKIN album. Overall a good overview of Toby's career before he started taking himself too seriously.
The beginning of a legend... May 20, 2004 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Several years ago, a young man arrived in Nashville from Oklahoma. He came with a guitar and a demo tape. He was turned down by every major record label, and sent back home. He never truly gave up, however, and today he is country music's most dependable hitmaker. Is it such a wonder, then, that Toby Keith has taken on an arrogant, grand-standing attitude? He deserves the break (and there're quite a few people who deserve a flip of the ol' bird, too).
Most of the songs on that demo tape Keith brought with him to Nashville are included on here--smash hits. "Should've Been a Cowboy" was the most-played song of the decade, and still gets a lot of airtime (you can't deny that it's destined to be a country music classic). "Does that Blue Moon Shine on You" is a heartbreaking, mournful number; "We Were In Love" takes a look back on days gone by; "You Ain't Much Fun" is quite fun indeed; and few songs are more romantic than "Me Too".
This is Toby Keith pre-"How Do You Like Me Now." This is Toby Keith the musician, the songwriter, the POET. This is Toby Keith's GREATEST HITS, VOLUME 1. His first few years--what will be known as the "early years," in the future. Because Toby Keith is a superstar, heading for legend. You just better make room for him.
