I've found none better November 13, 2000 48 out of 49 found this review helpful
I own all four CDs in this series, and every one of them is satisfying. All the songs except a few are sung by the same man, whose voice is expressive and never grating, with a home-spun, informal quality. Much more tolerable than all-kids CDs. All the songs I remember from growing up are here, performed true-to-original, but with tremendous creative flair. And the arrangements, believe it or not, are diverse and never tiresome. Put simply, I don't get sick of these songs, which is a good thing because I have to hear them over and over. There's a couple of originals on each CD and they're becoming standards in our family. The other kids songs CDs we own languish on the shelf. You can't lose, but I recommend buying all four for diversity's (and possibly sanity's) sake--and so you don't miss out on a favorite.
Excellent! A true favorite! December 12, 2001 46 out of 46 found this review helpful
WE have the first of these cd's and plan on getting the others. They are not what you expect when think Disney- in other words, they don't have Micky siging a song or Goofy introducing all the songs. This is just one song after the other, and the songs themselves are excellent. They are the old classics I remember from my childhood. The man who is singing them has a pleasant voice that you can listen to over and over again and not get tired of his singing (that is a must in my opinion on long car trips). At times a children's choir will help sing a song and this only adds to the enjoyment of the songs in my opinion. This CD is a favorite of ours and a favorite of my son (age 2). Well worth the money.
Just what I've been looking for . . . March 26, 1999 34 out of 34 found this review helpful
Highly recommended. This is one of the best collections of children's songs I've found. Volumes 1-4 together contain just about every song you want to sing to your kids but can't remember the words to. All the old favorites are there. The arrangements are nice -- sort of folky, not too cute, with sparing use of kiddie chorus that enhances rather than detracts. It completely avoids the hyper-energetic cutsiness of a lot of children's recordings. The songs are performed by a real live folk singer some may remember from way back named Larry Groce, and he does a good job -- he's engaging, inviting, enthusiastic, without embarrassing himself the way some of those kid singers do. For its completeness, for the good musical taste of the arrangements and production, and for the hours and hours of fun it contains, this entire collection is a must have in our book.
Simply the BEST anthology of American childrens' music! August 9, 2000 31 out of 31 found this review helpful
All of my traditional favorites from childhood are in this series, and my daughters love them at least as much as I do. Nothing weird or esoteric as in other anthologies that have a 'political' agenda. No one of these four CDs in the series are any better or any worse than the others - they are all equally wonderful - a "must own!"The "author" being "Disneyland Cast" is misleading. These recordings are NOT Disney-ized (I was afraid before buying them, that this might be the case) with very rare exception (two or three songs on all four CDs in this series). The rest are just great vocals and accompaniment. There are some arrangements with kids choruses, but they add to the fun. I also live abroad, like another reviewer, and bought these CDs to make sure that my kids were getting exposure to American culture and language. I have received many comments from other parents wanting to know where they can get such a collection. These are perfect for singing-along on long car trips or singing and dancing family fun at home! Simply THE BEST!
What a waste of time.....and money ! April 19, 2002 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
I thought whatever comes from Disney is a gem. But I was greatly mistaken on this one ! When I went around scouting for a nursery rhyme CD for my newborn, there were obviously a huge range of choices, and I picked this one from Disney, mainly because .....well, it's Disney, known for all the wonderful songs from those classic cartoon films. And I noticed that these songs in Vol 1 are from the 70s and before, must be real classics. But no ! was I ever wrong !Firstly, you have only one boring singer singing ALL the songs. Though his voice is smooth and suitable for children songs, but I expected more variety, like some girl, boy, woman or old man lending their voices too, and maybe some sound effects, like a choo choo train and what not ! That would have been very entertaining to the kids. And the backing instrumentation is deadpan mundane ! Secondly, the CD's only 37 minutes. C'mon do a great favour for these kids and fill it up to some 60 minutes or so, don't force the little ones to dig more from their pockets ?!
