 My Winter Storm - highly recommended November 17, 2008
I bought the version with the DVD, it was a few extra $, but well worth it. You get to see video of 'My Winter Storm' (the song), and an interview with Tarja during / after the making of the video. There are also a few different versions of the video; they vary in slight sublties.
The album was a great first solo effort for her. She still keeps within the music genre that was Nightwish (orchestral,gothic,metal), but at the same time, she brings in her own creativity and inspiriations and produces songs that are very uniquely hers. I think the lyrics to 'My Winter Storm' seem to tell a story about what happened between her and Nightwish. I am very intersted to see what her next album will bring.

A Perfect Storm August 19, 2008
This album is beauty and perfection from start to finish. It's not a substitute for old Nightwish, but it does a much better job at easing the pain of Tarja's departure than "Dark Passion Play". The tracks range from gothic and metal to soft and ethereal, but they all showcase her amazing vocals. Some were instant favorites and some grew on me over time, but after a few weeks I adore every single track. In fact, I'm listening to "Oasis" right now :).

I'd never heard of Tarja until it came as a "amazon reccomendation". Its now one of my favorite gothic/metal albums. Very Scandinavean - similar to Nightwish at their best. Highly recommended.

My Winter Storm this was my first CD of Tarja's that I had listened to since she left Nightwish. Very impressed with her voice range. Have committed almost all her songs to memory. The CD with bonus DVD is a must have for your collection.

When I heard the news that Tarja Turunen was no longer going to be the lead singer of Nightwish, I wasn't all that torn. I figured she'd do great, if not greater things on her own. However, when I first listened to her debut solo album, MY WINTER STORM, I was disappointed to say the least. After a few tiresome spins I set the CD aside for several months, unimpressed, and yet somehow I find myself loving it now. There's your atypical symphonic metal tracks like the rockin' "My Little Phoenix" and "Die Alive", but the majority of the album focuses on her classical voice. "Boy And The Ghost" is a stunningly gorgeous, heartfelt ballad about a boy devoid of love while "Our Great Divide" shows off Tarja's operatic chops with chilling precision. I also really enjoy "Oasis". It reminds me of something you'd hear on some epic Japanese romance score. It is absolutely bewitching.
I'm not sure why MY WINTER STORM took so long to grow on me but I'm glad it finally has. It is certainly better than the latest Nightwish album, and I'm sure her next endeavor will reflect even more of a seperation from her former band. And that, folks, is called progressive growth. You can't expect ~ and why would you want? ~ her music to sound like a carbon-copy of Nightwish which she's no longer a part of. I for one am grateful for the change here but would like for her to take it to another level.
