5 out of 5 stars Conjure Man   September 29, 2005

Rob Thomas is the contemporary master of the great hook. Any guy who wrote "Smooth" knows his pop chart stuff. He's got a great, soulful sound, and always did. I think any comparison to Justin Timberlake is ludicrous, and a fantastic compliment to Timberlake. Rob is a smart, edgy guy, even if his music isn't edgy. Matchbox twenty is as far from edgy as you can get, but they've pumped out some terrific singles. Call them "post-grunge", "alt-rock", or anything else - that doesn't change the fact that Rob has had a great history since "Push". He knows how to reach into your chest, grab your heart, and say, "It doesn't even matter if you KNOW what I'm singing - you will love this song!" This guy is truly talented, and I've never understood the static that critics have given him over the years. The accusation that he's responsible for all of the prefabricated late-90's pop in the world is ridiculous, and the notion that he shouldn't sing his own stuff, but only write for OTHER people, is absurd.

"Lonely No More" is another great single with a slick urban sound, and it hooked me instantly. The video adds to this mesmerizing quality, with its "Rubik's cube" flip gimmick. I loved the look of it, and Rob's new hair! He's older and more mature now, and he's not the same man that he was 10 years ago. He's changing, and this is evidence of that change. This new album has some unbelievable new sounds on it, and he's mid-journey in his songwriting life. Let him go on that journey.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely not Timberlake!   July 19, 2005

I must say I am amused by the reviews comparing Thomas to Timberlake here. Oh, the gall! Anyone who has spent some time listening to both voices must agree that Thomas has much better control, better phrasing, wider range, more power and possesses a voice that integrates well with whatever melody is behind him than Timberlake's. Try removing the vocals and play the voice and music separately for each singer and you'll see what I mean. Please spare me with the comparison. Timberlake is a good singer in his own right, but he needs backing and does very well in a group. Solo? I am not so sure. When I see Santana signing up Timberlake on a megaplatinum album is when I'll eat my shorts! :)

5 out of 5 stars Lonely No More by Rob Thomas!!!!!!!   April 5, 2005

Wow! I am not going to say that this is the best song in the world because in the future there will be other songs out there that I will like better than this one, but right now, this one is my #1 for 2005. Now, readers, that is my personal opinion. I am not saying that this is the best and that's how you should feel, and I am not going to diss you if you differentiate with my point of view. Rob Thomas has an excellent voice. He is the voice, and other acts that I'm not going to mention for fear of the hate that the fans might grow for me, seriously, they fall short. Move over, world. Here comes Rob Thomas, and just like in the video of Lonely No More, he's throwing everyone else out and down and breaking down most of the male acts down there that are making big bucks although they have zip talent. This is real talent (again, only my personal opinion, NOT A FACT) and those others must be angry right now. Lonely No More is #8 on VH1's Top Twenty Countdown which reflects partly the results of the Billboard Charts... now isn't that something? and it's squeezing itself slowly all the way to #1. My guess is that it will be #1 within 2 or 3 weeks, and it debuted at #10 on this countdown. Go figure.

GO ROB!!!

3 out of 5 stars Rob Timberlake?   May 12, 2005

You will be forgiven for thinking that Justin Timberlake has returned with a new single. After all, Rob Thomas from the famed Matchbox 20 has decided to emulate everything off Timberlake including a funky R&B sound to cropping his hairdo and dyeing it platinum blonde. The result is surprisingly successful.

Rob Thomas looks every inch the solo singer rather than the lead singer of Matchbox 20. While it may not be exactly a fab idea to fill the void of Timberlake while he's on hiatus, Lonely No More is surely stomping funky R&B that's lingering and hardly forgettable, complete with a slick video. It's not something you would have expected from Thomas after his outing with Santana and the last Matchbox album.

Though I must still say that the Timberlake likeness is too close for comfort.
