Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
It's likely that a decade after its debut record this band now has fans who might ask, "You mean Dave Grohl was in a band before the Foo Fighters?" But they, or any Foo followers who pine for the increasingly refined vocals and polished pop-punk uniformity of the first four albums, will swallow this one whole--or at least half. For as much as vocalist/bandleader Grohl and Co. mix a similar concoction on the 20-song double CD, they manage to agitate the formula ever so slightly. Disc one follows the Foo's classic sonic blueprint: lip-smacking melodies and enigmatic lyrics, double-barrel guitars and drums that attack. But songs take a gentle turn on the second CD, showcasing Grohl's underrated vocals amidst a high-energy ensemble of acoustic guitars, piano and mandolin (by studio guest John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin). Singing, not shouting, Grohl flips potential teen-rock anthems like "Miracle" and "Cold Day in the Sun" (with drummer Taylor Hawkins handling lead vocals) into impending adult-oriented radio staples and, 11 years after Nirvana, the Foo Fighters may finally have their triumph. --Scott Holter

1 out of 5 stars How many copies should I buy ???   August 7, 2005

So I just bought the new FF CD. There is a sticker on the package that says:

This CD is protected against unauthorized duplication.

Whatever. So I pop the CD in the computer so that I can rip it and put it on my iPod. The CD starts playing some auto play stuff and then an embedded Windows Media Player comes up in a web page and allows you to play the songs. Exit. I went into iTunes and hit Import to rip the tracks. When it finished I went to play the tracks and they were all garbled. What's going on?

The CD is protected. It will only allow you to play it on a computer with its technology. You cannot rip tracks from the CD. It specifically states that you cannot move the songs to an iPod because they (in so many words) don't like Apple and Apple isn't working with them so screw Apple. Huh? No, screw you. I like Apple and I just bought your music. But by the way, this album is available at the iTunes Music Store.

After doing some research, it turns out that this company is putting their copy protection on more and more CDs. This one happens to be the first one that I have bought. So now what? How does this work? Turns out that when Windows starts to auto-run the CD, it quickly installs a hidden driver on your machine that is used to garble the sound of CDs protected by this technology. So now my computer is "infected" with this driver. Some grad school student figured this out a while back and let the world know if you just hold down the shift key, Window's auto-run does not run and you have ready access to the CD. They threatened to sue him.

That solution is too late for me, I already have this installed. More research and system scans pointed me to a hidden driver on my machine called SbcpHid. You will find it in your Windows\System32\Drivers directory. So all you have to do is go into the Windows device manager, find it, stop it. Now you can rip. If you want it off your machine, you can uninstall it from there too.

While there was a sticker on the front of the CD, I found this to be very sneaky. I mean installing hidden drivers on your computer. The driver is not marked with any company name or details so you don't know what it is. The timestamp of the driver was manually adjusted so you couldn't tell that this was installed today. This sounds like most of the spyware that we are all trying to rid our computers of.

So where does that leave us? If you buy the music in a store, you can only play on these certain devices? If I would have bought this music at the iTunes music store, I am limited to what Apple wants me to do. So in this case, if I wanted a good old CD case and disc plus the music on my iPod, I would have to buy the same music 2 times according to the record company. That isn't right. Fair use law dictates it. If the industry doesn't get this figured out, we are going to be in trouble. For now, I guess you and I need to be selective about how we buy our music.

1 out of 5 stars Limited Edition also copy protected   June 28, 2005

While only the regular edition is listed as copy protected by Amazon's information, the Limited Edition is copy protected as well. There is even a small note stating that the audio portion of this Dualdisc does not conform to CD standards; so this isn't a CD. Thats terrible. Here's a note to all bands releasing copy protected "CD"s . I am a customer and a fan, not a thief - Treat me as a theif and i will not be a customer or a fan anymore. I don't buy copy protected discs, so this one goes back. Pity. Disabling Auto-Insert works, but I shouldn't have to.

4 out of 5 stars Fighting Foo with Foo   June 15, 2005

(4 & 1/2 stars) A few weeks ago when I first saw the excellent video for "Best of You," the great debut single from In Your Honor, I was sure the album would also be terrific. And it is. I like the "split album" concept - one disc hot and the other cool. "Best of You" is just an amazingly good song, in the "powerfully melodic" tradition of such previous Foo masterpieces as "Times Like These" and "Monkey Wrench." "Best" and other solid tunes on the first disc make it the equal of other hard-rocking Foo albums of the past. But the 2nd disc is the real revelation. We've certainly seen that Grohl and band can make some memorable slower music, as fans of the TV show "Ed" could attest. A whole CD of softer material is an interesting move - and apparently a controversial one too. (In this respect, Grohl can't win -- people bashed him for going Heavy Metal on the Probot CD; now he is getting complaints about slowing down for this album's 2nd CD!) New songs such as "Still" and "Another Round" are also strong, but it's a quiet strength. I would still like to hear "loud" versions of new songs like "What If I Do?" - but that may be something for another day. Meanwhile, I will accept and enjoy these two CDs for what they are - my favorite album so far this year!

3 out of 5 stars What should be a good value becomes a rip off   June 15, 2005
63 out of 76 found this review helpful

Something needs to be said and done about this record company releasing a "limited edition" dual disc and charging up to $15 more than the standard 2 disc version. Most CD's today come out with a choice and there is no more than $3 price difference for those who enjoy the 5.1 surround sound Dual Disc. If that wasn't enough, ONLY the 2nd CD is in 5.1 Surround. What a disaster.. Look, I'm a fan, and this is a decent CD.. CD one is TOO heavy at times, and CD 2 is TOO boring at times, but overall it's an interesting double album concept and likeable record. JUST DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE "LIMITED EDITION". There's nothing limited about it, and certainly not worth $14 dollars more than the standard version. So 4 stars for the actual record, and ZERO stars for the packaging and pricing!
