Call iit what you will. June 13, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
My Dying Bride prefers to call thier music "Doom Metal", and MDB fans hate it when you call this band "Gothic Metal"...but in truth, either tag applies. Whatever you want to call it...it's an amazing album. I love it's slow and melodic atmosphere...ultra darkness. If your looking for deathmetal...there are a few traces of that here. This isn't a speedy or hard hitting power band....this is just sheer dark metal that evokes darke desire and invites deep emotional response. IMO, this is one of the most unique band in metal culture.
My Dying Bride lives another day! September 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm definitly a fan of this band, and I love this album. The two best tracks on this CD are "The Scarlet Garden", and "Catherine Blake". I love the way the vocals sound, the british accent, and the ultra gothic atmosphere that remains consistent throughout the album. Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light has a mysterious romantic side to it. Goth, goth, goth...MDB may not like being called that, but that is what they are. This music is quite beautiful if you listen to it from start to finnish. A must have CD for fans of dooom metal and symphonica.
So Powerful, So Beautiful... November 11, 2008 Well I am fairly new to My Dying Bride (can't understand why, I'm an Old School Goth after all but it takes me awhile to find good bands sometimes, a bit slow I guess!). This CD is just simply awesome--if you like your darkness to be very, very sensual...I can play this and I practically fall on the floor writhing in ecstasy. So of course I play it a lot! This band, wow...they're really not like any other band. I like some doom metal but M.D.B.'s music is a slow grind, most of the tracks anyway, or at least they don't attempt "speed" metal, I guess you could say. Which is good, because I can understand their lyrics--which are creative and erotic (in an s&m kind of way). I defy anyone to say this isn't "Gothic" music...much darker than this music, you cannot get. The marriage of words and music are an absolute aphrodisiac...all the songs melt into one another just perfectly, and when the final song ends, it feels like coming out of a trance. Y'know, like at the end of the Beatles song "She's So Heavy"--when it just ends, and you almost fall out of your chair? Kind of makes me feel like that. I try not to drink too much while listening to this, it could put me in a coma. So you've been warned. This is what Gothic Doom Metal is all about!!! :)
