Amazon.com The fifth-season American Idol finalist has a Nashville record deal, and his talents have traction. Bucky Covington's gravel-rough, expressive voice is sufficiently flexible to handle a wide spectrum of material. His flair for a light touch comes through on the Mark Nesler/Marty Dodson tune "I'm Good" and the pleasant "A Different World." Regrettably, he often has a tough row to hoe, since in the case of material and arrangements, producer Mark Miller (of Sawyer Brown fame) has simply thrown him onto Music Row's insidious studio assembly line. Covington gamely pours his heart into a sheaf of predictable songs, from the sentimental bathos of "I'll Walk" to "The Bible and the Belt" and "Back When We Were Gods," the types of generic heartland tunes sung so often by so many in the past decade that they no longer feel fresh or compelling. Musically, Miller wraps Covington in a sterile, studio version of Travis Tritt-style southern rock that robs him of any sort of distinctive style. American Idol is a difficult road, even for the Carrie Underwoods who ultimately come out on top. One who got as close as Covington did, with his potential, deserves better. --Rich Kienzle
Album Description Bucky Covington was a finalist in the 5th season of American Idol, where he went on to win the heartsof the American public, finishing 8th on the show. Originally from Rockingham, North Carolina, Bucky's long journey to national attention began where he and his identical twin Rocky were born. Drawn early to country music, Covington was a fan of Tim McGraw, George Strait, and Travis Tritt, among others. After getting his first guitar at age 19, he claimed local fame with the country/southern rock cover band Southern Thunder. He says his style of music is "country, with as much rock in it as I can get away with."

Not a bad album April 17, 2007 18 out of 23 found this review helpful
Bucky Covington is a former American Idol contestant who had a country twang. He didn't win the show but he is out with his first album. On the show Bucky seemed to have people who either liked him or they didn't. I liked his raspy twang. This album is a pretty decent country album. Today it's called country, "when we were boys and girls" it was called Southern Rock. The first single, "A Different World" talks about how things have changed in the world since people of Bucky's generation and older grew up in. I first read something with the same exact words in an email last year, not sure which came first the email or the song, probably the email. Bucky's vocals remind me a lot of 80's country group, Shanandoah. If you liked Bucky on the show and you like country/rock you'll probably like this album.
It's All Good April 22, 2007 14 out of 19 found this review helpful
This CD goes to show that America got some of it really, really, wrong last year and some of it right. There were MANY great American Idol Season 5 contestants who would have walked all over this year's JV field.
American Idol/19's high production values, and aptly adept music & lyrics give AI 5's Bucky a well-deserved blast-off. This Soul Patroler/reviewer thought the debut efforts of Taylor Hicks, Elliott Yamin and Daughtry would grow on me - as yet they haven't. Kellie's Small Town Girl has its songs and its moments, * but Bucky's is all good at Go, an instantaneous meld with me - with its touches of Tim McGraw, Jimmy Buffet, John Cougar Mellencamp, and Springsteen - yet all Bucky. Even though I could hear it coming, I cried and got goosebumps on "I'll Walk."
This is clearly the best of the AI5 CDs - Heck - it's one of the best new CDs I've heard this year, at all at all, on par with Carrie's award winning Some Hearts. /TundraVsion, Amazon Reviewer
(* I do not purchase things I know I will not like, therefore I express no opinion a La Diva Katharine McBritney Stepford's.)
Knew he could do it! April 23, 2007 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I must brag and say that I saw something in Bucky, during his idol time, that not everyone else had. He needed some training as far as performing, but oh my! that raspy sexy voice! My favorite song is "I'm Good". Wow - what a charmer of a song that is. I love blasting it and singing along. Really so many great songs on this - it is a must for a country fan - and even for someone like me - more a rock lover.
Worth the wait! April 24, 2007 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
Sometimes it goes to show that you don't have to win to be the winner. I loved Bucky's voice and sound from the first time I watched him on American Idol. I do agree that last year's season brought many different and talented voices...one being Bucky. This is the third Cd that I have picked up from last year's winners...Daughtry, Elliott Yamin and now Bucky's. And I can say I haven't been disappointed on any of my choices. I just picked it up today and opened it immediately so I could listen to it on my drive home...this was the first time that I wished my drive home down the country road had been longer.
Another solid debut from a season 5 Idol Contestant April 18, 2007 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
The sixth contestant from AI season 5 to release an album in the past 6 months, Bucky Covington continues the streak of solid debuts by alums from that season. Even more surprising though is the fact that having listened to Elliott, Taylor, Kellie, Katharine, and Chris' CD's I think Bucky's debut is one of the better of the 6. I think Chris and Taylor's albums are superior to this one, but after that I think Bucky's debut is the next best of the 6. I never really liked Bucky on AI, and was frankly very surprised to hear he had landed a record deal. Despite the fact that I still think Bucky has one of the weakest voices of season 5's top 12, this album is a very strong country debut. The album contains the essentials for what a good country album should have, and I also think the album has a lot of potential to be commercially successful, not as much so as Carrie's Some Hearts, but there are definitely some real radio ready songs on here. Here's my individual song reviews:
1. American Friday Night-A very fun way to open the record, and one of my favorites on the album. Bucky talks about a typical high school Friday night in a good old USA town. Definitely one of the catchiest songs on the album as well, should be a big country hit and might even have pop crossover appeal. I'm not sure why this wasn't the first single, but hopefully it will be one of the singles. 9/10
2. A Different World-The first single, and a somewhat odd choice since it's not really the type of song that should be released as a first single. It's a mellow song that talks about how much simpler life was back when Bucky was a kid opposed to today. It's a decent song with good lyrics, but can get boring very quickly. I do think that Bucky's voice sounds exceptionally good on this song though. 7/10
3. I'll Walk-A country ballad, this song tells a very touching tale of the lives of a couple where the woman is crippled but insists "I'll Walk" during certain times in their relationship. The song is one of the strongest lyrically, but unfortunately lacks any real hooks. This makes it a tough listen since the melody is very forgettable. Gets points for the lyrics though. 6/10
4. Back When We Were Gods-A song about the cockiness and feeling of invincibility that Bucky and his friends had when they were teens right before they were about to start their adult lives. A solid song that grows on you. 8/10
5. Ain't No Thing-A mediocre twang type song where Bucky insists it "Ain't no thang" when his girlfriend breaks up with him. Typical filler track. 5/10
6. I'm Good-Pure catchy, sing a long fun. Bucky tells the tale of a guy who's got his eye on the "deacon's daughter". Problem is he's a rough chewin, cussing red neck, and she's a dainty devout Christian. So the guy calls on god for just one favor, to give him "this girl, and I'm good." My personal favorite, if any song on here can be a big hit on country and pop stations, it's this one. 10/10
7. Empty Handed-Another catchy, entertaining track, this one has a distinct almost southern rocker feel unlike any of the other tracks. I wish there were more songs like this on the album since I think Bucky's voice fits really well into the southern country/rock type genre. 9/10
8. Hometown-A very laid back track about a small simple town that Bucky hopes that heaven is just like. This one is similar to A Different World in that it can be kind of boring, but it can also be a very pleasant song to listen to if you're in a relaxed mood. 7.5/10
9. Good to Be Us-Probably my least favorite song, Bucky talks about a couple in love with everything they need. Just another filler track in my opinion. 4/10
10. Carolina Blue- A melodic mid tempo song that's well written and is catchy enough to stop it from being boring. Bucky talks about being blue over missing Carolina, which can be interpreted as a person or the place. This is another I could see as a hit on country radio. 8.5/10
11. Bible and the Belt- A straight up country track where Bucky talks about getting his religion through how Mom preached the bible, and Daddy preached the belt. A solid way to close out the album. 7.5/10
