Amazon.com Anchored by a muscular, yet funky live version of Gavin DeGraw's theme song "I Don't Want to Be," this collection of music from -- and, of course, "inspired by" -- the hit WB series walks the fine line between stock-in-trade teen musical angst and decidedly more AC-friendly fare with its dignity intact. Its emotionally charged mix-tape sensibility comes courtesy of series creator/producer Mark Schwan and his music supervisors, a team who showcase the earnest contributions of show star/troubadour Tyler Hilton (including a winning duet with co-star Bethany Joy Lenz covering Ryan Adam's "When the Stars Go Blue") amidst music that's often moodier (Travis' fine "Re-Offender," the languorous "Lie in the Sound" by Trespassers William) and more aggressive ("Shoot Your Gun" by UK trio 22-20s). Still, it's an album whose heart is tender, as ably demonstrated by The Wreckers' (a collaboration between Michelle Branch and Midwest singer-songwriter Jessica Harp) bright harmonies on "The Good Kind" and an inviting acoustic version of Sheryl Crow's Grammy-nominated "First Cut is the Deepest." --Jerry McCulley
Album Description With "One Tree Hill" becoming a youth fave in its second season its alternative pop/modern rock earns its own album. Music from the WB Television Series "One Tree Hill" features six exclusives, including Sheryl Crow's acoustic version of her hit "The First Cut is the Deepest" and Gavin Degraw's live rendering of his hit "I Don't Want To Be". Modern pop reaches its peak on One Tree Hill.

Too random for my taste. August 4, 2005 6 out of 13 found this review helpful
As one of the original fans of One Tree Hill, I was very surprised when I read the track listing for this soundtrack. Evidently, the WB was bent on promoting new artists, rather than the ones who contributed important songs to the show. A better soundtrack might have included "Calling All Angels" by Train, "She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5, or "Dare You To Move" by Switchfoot. To be fair, Gavin Degraw's "I Don't Want to Be," One Tree Hill's theme song, is present here, as is "The First Cut is the Deepest" by Sheryl Crow, which she performed when she guest starred on the show. These are both pivotal songs. Keane's "Everybody's Changing" is a nice addition to the soundtrack, but other than, the songs are random, more so than should be tolerable for a true fan of One Tree Hill.
Modern Pop at it's Best... January 26, 2005 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Although I haven't seen the show, they certainly have great taste in music, as seen on the album. With already known stars including Sheryl Crow, Michelle Branch, Gavin Degraw, and Jimmy Eat World, and rising stars Story of the Year, Keane, and Tyler Hilton, this album is a MUST HAVE!!! With a few exclusive tracks including a live performance of Gavin Degraws "I don't want to be", and Acoustic tracks of Tyler Hilton's "Glad", Story of the Year's "Sidewalks", and Sheryl Crow's "The First Cut is the Deepest", this album will have you singing the sweet serenade that is music. And don't forget the new Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp group...aka..THE WRECKERS!!! Their song "The Good Kind" is easily one of the best songs on the album and has a strong folk feel to it with a hint of country...a nice blend! And how about the hidden jewels of Trespassers William soothingly beautiful "Lie in the Sound", Butch Walker alternative "Mixtape", Travis funky "Re-Offender" that sounds like a cross of Moby and Fatboy Slim, the 22-20s "Shoot Your Gun" and the Rock n Roll Soldiers funky-ly kick a$$ song "Funny Little Feeling"...top-notch work!! Tyler Hilton and Bethany Joy Lenz's rendition of "When the Stars Go Blue" is a pleasant rendiditon of the classic verson and ready for Adult Contemporary Radio! Anyway, Go out and Buy the album!! You won't be disappointed
The WB makes so much great soundtracks!... January 27, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love the show since the first second and was waiting for the soundtrack to be available. It's the case now and i'm not disappointed at all!... All the songs are great and some of them are inedit versions which gives more credit to this CD because it's not just a compilation,it's real mix with a spirit (the lyrics of each songs can be relate to the atmosphere of the serie and its characters). As a Michelle Branch i was glad to hear her new song and can't wait for the weckers to have their album available. I love bethany joy lenz's voice and was a little disappointed that her version of elswhere wasn't on the CD...But gladly, her duet with tyler hilton is!... Anyway,it's a really great CD so buy it!
good, but not what it could have been February 14, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
One tree hill is the best place available right now to discover new music. Aside from single handedly launching the careers of Gavin DeGraw and Tyler Hilton, it has also helped little known bands such as Keane and Snow Patrol, however, if you've watched the show from the beginning and have been dreaming about the perfect soundtrack, you may be disappointed. It's a myth to me, after all of the excellent selections for the show, why the soundtrack has been so poorly put together. Some of the best songs ever featured, including snow patrol's Run, from the first season finale, Jimmy eat world's 23, and Keane's she has not time, are all absent. There is no Johnathan rice, I am Kloot, modest mouse, Dashboard confessional, or Ben Lee on this soundtrack, even though those songs were some of the most memorable from the series.
I realize that both keane and jimmy eat world already have songs on the CD, but both of the aformentioned songs are better and more memorable than the two on the CD, and Tyler hilton had two songs, so why can't they? They're better. The exclusive material is nice, and Sidewalks and the live version of I don't wanna be, are some of the most fun songs on the CD, but the actual version of tyler hilton's glad is better than the acoustic, and I don't ever want to hear Sheryl crow's rendition of the first cut is the deepest again, let alone the acoustic version. This leads me to the Wreckers and Tyler hilton and Bethany joy lenz. "The good kind" is one of my favorite songs on the album, as is when the stars go blue, and Bethany Joy Lenz is definately talented. If nothing else, by the CD for these two exclusives.
Other highlights include Overdue, by the little know get up kids, Shoot your gun by the 22-20's, mixtape by butch walker, and Keane and Jimmy eat world's contributions. There is one more great song, but beforethat, I must tell you what the problem is with TV soundtracks. The best songs that really catch your ear when first featured on the show, are the ones that make you go out to buy the album. For that reason, I had to cut the Keane and Jimmy eat world out when I ripped it onto my iPod because I already had the albums. I replaced them with some other great songs, but the thing is, it seems like I never have the best songs on the soundtrack when I listen. It was wise of them to put some stuff not yet featured. That way, they can get the fans money before they go off to buy the actual album. For that reason, I am going to exclude those two songs, and say that in second comes Lie in the sound, by the completely unknown trespassers william. It's beautiful, and it's definately a welcome suprise.
But above all is Butch Walkers "Mixtape" a song with flawless melodies and pianos mixed with Walkers execllent voice and lyrics that creates four minutes of the best music you'll hear this decade. Butch Walker is well on his way to being the best solo artist on the scene today, and with one of the best albums of 2004 and a debut just as good, it looks as if this guy will entrance and gain fans, while never losing the old ones.
Overall, the soundtrack it good, aside from several mis-steps (the almost painful funny little feeling and the slightly boring re-offender,and the first cut is the deepest) which I would of liked to have replaced by better songs, I rank it close to the OC soundtrack, but despite the fact that One Tree Hill has featured better music overall than the OC, the OC soundtracks remain better and more innovative collections. It offers fans many familiar sounds, and a few suprises. It's good, but the show has featured better songs.
