Mickey and pals Donald Duck, Goofy, and Minnie Mouse share three adventures in Mickey Saves Santa, an engaging, computer-animated video that is mostly set within Mickey's Teletubbies-like dome of a home. The title story finds Mrs. Claus imploring Mickey's posse to help Santa down from Mistletoe Mountain, where he's stuck and can't deliver toys to all the children of the world. A second episode concerns a silly game of hide-and-seek, in which Donald proves a surprise master. Finally, Goofy needs help from Mickey in getting a lost baby bird back to its mother. The bright, chipper animation is full of little surprises, such as entire sections of Mickey's house that flip over, revealing sets beneath sets. Like Dora the Explorer, the action sometimes stops so Mickey can ask young viewers which of several "Mousketools" is the right one to complete a certain task. Bonus features include the "Hot Dog" dance-along and "Mickey's Picture Puzzle Game," in which kids can help unscramble a mixed-up picture. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Not As Good As I Expected   November 21, 2006

We recently bought the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse CD and I LOVE it. So when I heard that a new DVD was coming out--Mickey Saves Santa--I of course wanted to buy it for my son. (We buy several new holiday DVDs every year.)

Mickey Saves Santa features 3 episodes:

*Mickey Saves Santa
*Goofy's Bird
*Mickey-Go-Seek

The new episode, Mickey Saves Santa, is only about 17 minutes long--with a very simplistic plot line. In fact, Mickey and Donald are the primary Disney characters. The rest of the gang are relegated to showing up at Mickey's for a slumber party (right before Mrs. Claus crashes the party requesting Mickey's help), and then at the end of the story.

Santa is apparently stuck at Mistletoe Mountain and Mrs. Claus asks Mickey to help. Mickey then asks Donald to be the co-pilot. He protests, almost beginning a tantrum, while Mrs. Claus gently scolds "Now Donald--be nice or you won't get any presents!" She does this about 5 times through the entire story! At the end of the "adventure", Donald is rewarded with tons of gifts for "being nice". Never mind that his natural inclination is to throw tantrums and be greedy--all that matters is that, because he's "played nice" for awhile, he's now deserving of a crap load of presents. (Not because the Claus's are grateful, but because Donald "played nice". What a message to send to kids! Unfortunately, this world rarely rewards those who "play nice"--let alone those who actually ARE nice and do so because they're nice at core.)

My personal rant aside, this DVD isn't worth the rather expensive price, in my opinion--especially since the other 2 episodes air frequently on Playhouse Disney...and Mickey Saves Santa probably will be airing in December, too.

I was expecting a full-length movie with an engaging plot, colorful animation, and ALL the characters--not a short, simplistic mini-story featuring a Mrs. Claus with a white Elvis 'do.

There aren't many extras on this DVD, either--just a "Dance-Along" to the rousing song "Hot Dog" (which is just the characters dancing around to the ending Clubhouse song--no dance step instructions or anything) and a Picture Puzzle Game which has kids guessing which one of three pictures is being formed by a (very simplistic) on-screen puzzle. I think we got through 15 or more puzzles, so there's a decent amount. But still...

If your child is a rabid fan of Mickey Mouse or the Clubhouse TV show, they'll probably love this DVD. However, I think that Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas is a better buy. If you prefer CGI animation, Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas is stunning--but some of the thematic elements aren't so "nice", especially for younger kids.

3 out of 5 stars It's ok but...   November 14, 2006

What you're getting here is a Santa themed episode plus two other eps that have already aired. If you don't mind that then it's great. I'd be willing to bet that Playhouse Disney will play this episode when it gets closer to Christmas, you could just Tivo it and save yourself the $$. If you're looking for a Christmas movie with Mickey and the gang I'd recommend Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas.

1 out of 5 stars waste of money!   November 24, 2006

Save your money! What a waste Mickey saves Santa is just an episode, not extended or a movie which the commercial implies. The other two episodes have nothing to do with the Holiday. My kids, ages 3 & 4 were extremely disapointed as well as myself.

4 out of 5 stars This Is A Good DVD...   November 26, 2006

This DVD is 72 minutes in length. It consists of three episodes, one being Christmas themed and some bonus features which are music and some puzzles. If your child likes MMC they will probably enjoy this DVD.Our three year old granddaughter does like this DVD and has watched it several times since we bought it about one week ago.It would be nice if all three episodes were new ones but most kid's DVD's do not do this.THINK DORA DVD's.We bought this at Target for $3.00 less than Amazon's price.

3 out of 5 stars Santa episode is great but two others inc. are prev. shown episodes!!!   November 20, 2006

I'm giving this 3 stars because my son really enjoyed the 20-minute Santa episode. I DID NOT enjoy the fact that the other 2 episodes are on the Disney Channel all the time! My youngest son absolutely adores The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. So I knew when I saw the commercials for this that I would purchase it. I was so excited for him to watch it! On the outside of my DVD package all it says is "Mickey Saves Santa and other Mousekatales." I just assumed they would be holiday-related. Nowhere on the outside of my DVD box did it name the other episodes. So, needless to say, I was EXTREMELY dissappointed when I opened the DVD box and inside is where I saw that the other two episodes are ones that are shown on the DISNEY channel every week!!! My son did love the Santa episode but it's just a regular length episode. The entire DVD is 70 minutes long but that is with those other two episodes that are on tv all the time. I mistakenly thought the Santa episode would be more of a movie-length show. Sorry, Disney, I think this was a rotten deal.

I'm adding to this review because I saw today on the Disney Channel that they will be airing the Santa episode later this month. Because the other two episodes on this DVD already air regularly, if I were you I would save yourself the money and just watch this episode on tv. Honestly, I won't be buying another Disney show-based movie again. Had I known this was just a regular episode and they would be airing it before Christmas, I would have just waited until it aired and TiVo'd it and saved myself a lot of money! I just feel like Disney was downright untruthful and misleading with the way this was advertised and packaged.
