5 out of 5 stars "Jump" Best Maxi-Single of 'Confessions' Era   November 8, 2006
34 out of 38 found this review helpful

Out of all the singles released during Madonna's "Confessions on a Dance Floor" era, I feel "Jump" is by far the best. The song itself is Madonna at her best; a sort of inspirational, pop pick-me-up inspiring people to not allow the pressures and trials of life get you down and go for what you want and never to "look back".

Single wise, this is the first maxi-single in ages to actually include an extended mix. Not only is the extended version of "Jump" true to the original but it adds in great vocal effects at the start and ending to really give the song an epic-dance feel to it. The Jacques Lu Cont mix of Jump removes the upbeat dance feel of the song and adds in a more mysterious, darker tone that actually gives the song new life. The Axwell mix and the Mixshapes are both pretty good as well; very club-ready and unlike some of the past singles, they actually make good use of the vocals and don't completely hack away at the original song and the message.

What also makes "Jump" stand out from the other releases is the unreleased song from 'Confessions' titled "History." To me, it's one of Madonna best b-sides and is album worthy. Heavy-dance beat with a plea for people to take a look at the world we live in and to actually do something to make it better. This, to me, is Madonna at her best; not only does she bring a nice dance beat with great production and a nice show of her vocals, but she also has lyrics that actually SAY something and have meaning.

This is probably the last single from "Confessions" but wow, this is a way to close out another album era. This is a must own and draws strength from the variety and great production each mix was given. While the "Hung Up" and "Get Together" singles both seemed to be a bit repetitive and not do the album-version of the songs justice, this single actually does a great job of offering listeners the song as it was on the album and different interpretations; from a darker, moodier, version as captured by Jacques Lu Cont to the techno-club ready tracks made by Axwell and Mixshapes. Plus, as an added bonus you have the epic-feel Extended mix and the unreleased, remixed version of 'History'. BUY this single, you won't be dissapointed. Are you ready to jump?

2 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype   November 13, 2006

Every time La Ciccone releases something, it's not long before her fans start chirping about her "doing it again" or "the best yet". This is rarely the case and "Jump" is no exception.

The single edit of this song takes out the spoken bits of the song which in this reviewer's opinion are the most important as they set the stage for the tone of the song as well as cutting out the nice "West End Girls"-esque intro. Ditto for the extended version - this is just a poorly-drawn out version of the song with some choppy editing, not the quirky, fun 'extended mixes' of yore.

The Jacque Lu Cont mix (suprise! Another mix by Jacque Lu Cont aka Stuart Price aka Paper Faces aka Man With Guitar aka....) is ok but no different than the other 10,000 identically structured remixes he has done. The Axwell remix stinks of mid-90s house - the sort of thing you may have found on the "Bedtime Stories" singles, not something worthy of 2006. Ditto for the Junior Sanchez mix - also dated, and also failing to bring the spirit of the original song into the remix.

The final track, "History" is for sure the anti-climax of this record. The track has not only one of the most annoying intros ever, but hideous lyrics "I've looked all around the world/Nobody has it better than we do". The "American Life" album would've blushed at lyrics that self-serving. It is also worth mentioning that the song sounds suspiciously like the Paper Faces (Stuart Price) remix of Scissor Sister's 'Filthy Gorgeous'.

Avoid this disappointing single.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Four Singles from Confessions   December 4, 2006

I've read a lot of reviews of Madonna's latest singles from Confessions on a Dance Floor. While I do agree that they are not as good as past maxi singles, I don't think they're as bad as all these people make them out to be. You know when you buy mixes like this you always take a risk because usually there is only a couple of good ones and the b-side is an added bonus. I was very dissapointed in the Hung Up single, the Sorry single had good points but was way worth the price just for the remix of "Let It Will Be"-which I had just discovered seeing the concert on TV two weeks ago! I loved it! Get Together was an improvement over Sorry, just because I think the song is slower and it's nice to hear remixes of it. Jump, however is good from start to finish. Nothing brilliant, but worth getting, if only for the unreleased song "History". If you're a big Madonna fan, you'll enjoy the b-side a lot, but I don't think casual fans would really go for it. It's in the same vein as "Get Together", only more upbeat and longer. Very nice song. I would like to see more b-sides like this rather than all mixes on these singles. I felt like "Fighting Spirit" should be on one of these releases rather than on the limited edition of the album. Don't always decide on your purchases based on these reviews. If you're a Madonna fanatic, get them all. If you're not, then just get "Jump". It seems to be the best.

4 out of 5 stars Improvement Over Last Single - Great B-Side!   November 16, 2006

1. Jump [Radio Edit] - 5 Stars
One of the better radio edit releases for a Madonna track. Short and sweet, yet doesn't take away from the album version.

2. Jump [Jacques Lu Cont Mix] - 4 Stars
It's time for Madonna to move on, enough of Stewart Price's "mixes" that basically take the album version, and bland it down just a bit. Not a bad mix, because "Jump" is such a great track to begin with - but nothing groundbreaking here.

3. Jump [Axwell Remix] - 3 Stars
I downloaded this remix off of Limewire, and deleted it immediately. I thought for sure it was some bootleg mix - I was wrong. This isn't a horrible mix, but the entire beginning "zipper" sound has to go! It gets better towards the end, a bit more club/house sounding.

4. Jump [Junior Sanchez's-Misshapes Mix] - 3 Stars
Probably my least favorite mix on the CD. The ending is just atrocious. But, there are some good parts to the mix.

5. Jump [Extended Album Version] - 5 Stars
Pretty self explanitory - a great song to begin with, so extending the album version just makes it better!

6. History - 4/5 Stars
I have to admit, the mix I downloaded on Limewire was better than the mix included on this CD - however, "History" is a great track, it kind of sounds like the "little brother/sister" to "Jump". Also, a great message behind the song - extending Madonna's view on how good we have it, and to not take things for grantite.

3 out of 5 stars Some things should be left alone.   November 14, 2006

I gave this single 3 stars because its only redeemed by the extended version of Jump and the track History which admittedly is'nt great but not horrible. Apparently there is single mix of History I've never heard and should have been included on this single instead of the very forgettable remixes of Jump. None of the remixes add anything to the already perfectly produced original version. The remixes take the joy and the good beat out of the original.
