The world can't get enough of Madonna, and with CD/DVD sets like The Confessions Tour dropping regularly, it's little wonder why. As a thrower of fantasy dance parties, she is peerless. As a physical role model for the 40-ish women who grew up on her music, she rules. And as an arbiter of what's going to sound shockingly original in any given decade--well, duh. The Confessions Tour rounds up songs from way back--"Ray of Light" and "La Isla Bonita" make the DVD, and "Lucky Star" and "Like a Virgin" are on the CD as well as the DVD--but this concert, filmed in 2006 at London's Wembley Arena, aims its sturdiest spotlight on Confessions on a Dance Floor, Madge's 2005 disco disc. You could argue, then, that unless you're in it for the sheer DVD spectacle (and what a spectacle it is), there's no sense in owning this package. Only you wouldn't be right. Because as any on-the-ball Madonna fan knows, what she's doing musically is telling a story--you may already know the characters, but that doesn't mean she hasn't completely reworked the plot. To that end, "I Love New York" gets its rock on, "Let It Will Be" has a musical temper tantrum, and "Hung Up" goes for the drama queen award. You've heard these songs before, but you've never heard them quite like this, to borrow a bad informercial phrase. As twisted and hopped-up as they've become, they're all worth getting to know again. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Madonna Confessions Tour 2006 is one of her best tours!,   January 30, 2007
55 out of 61 found this review helpful

Despite all the haters out there this was one of the best Madonna tours ever. Madonna described the tour as "turning the world into a giant dance floor". The show is divided into four separate acts with different themes: Equestrian, Urban Bedouin, Glam Punk and Disco Fever. Madonna's Confessions Tour was a concert tour organized to support the album Confessions on a Dance Floor and set the record for the top-grossing tour ever by a female artist. The tour grossed more than $194.8 million with a total of 60 shows and 1.2 million people in paid attendance through North America, Europe, and Japan. Despite the U.S. lack of good taste in music and by refusing to give her radio play for her Confessions CD, she still managed to gross more than $80 million for the U.S. shows alone throughout the summer. In The U.S. her confessions tour instantly became the highest grossing summer tour of the year 2006. The tour has generated international controversy due to its use of Christian religious symbols. While singing "Live to Tell", Madonna hangs from a mirrored cross wearing a crown of thorns around her head. Christian, Jewish and Muslim groups in North America and Europe came together to criticize what they saw as Madonna's exploitation of "sacred" Christian symbols and labeled the show as blasphemous even though they never saw the show. Madonna brought more than just the Devil out in some of these Christians and other religious groups. A 63-year-old Dutch priest was even arrested when he decided to make a confession of his own when he confessed to making a hoax bomb threat in an attempt to stop her concert. In response to the criticism, Madonna personally and publicly invited Pope Benedict XVI to see the show while she was in Rome - insisting that she was doing the controversial act to raise awareness and money for orphans abandoned in Africa (particularly Malawi) due to HIV/AIDS and that "Jesus wouldn't mind." (While she sings "Live To Tell," in the background run haunting images of the devastation in Africa right now. On the top of the screen, a count begins from 0 until it reaches 12 million - the number of orphans created by HIV/AIDS in Africa alone. The tour features songs mainly from her Confessions on a Dance Floor CD which is considered Madonna's comeback album from her previous lowest selling effort American Life. Confessions on a Dance Floor's sales are near 10 million worldwide. It also holds the record for topping the most charts in the world. The single "Hung Up" also holds the record for topping the most charts in the world. With Confessions on a Dance Floor Madonna refused to follow any U.S. chart trends. She decided to release a collection of dance/electronic songs, which did not receive significant airplay in the U.S. but received massive airplay on all other parts of the world, including Europe and Asia. Nevertheless, despite lack of U.S. radio support (boycott because she spoke out against the war and that idiot president bush) all of the singles had a great performance on iTunes and on MTV's TRL Video Music Countdown. Madonna kept her goals of doing what she wanted and establishing trends instead of following them. Even lack of support in her home country didn't stop the album from selling over 1,600,000 units in the U.S. alone. This is one amazing show and one of her best tours. Madonna is still The Most Successful Female Recording Artist in the history of the world and this DVD proves she is far from singing her last song.

5 out of 5 stars Madonna Re-Defines Queen of the Dance Floor   February 3, 2007
20 out of 21 found this review helpful

Because I only have 'Drowned World Tour' on DVD and nothing else (concert-wise), I wanted to have `TCT' to see for myself, what it was all about. My best friend attended the Montreal show and loved it. I never attended a Madonna concert and am very happy to own this item. Won't go into great detail regarding what should've been on it and what not. What I will say is that Madonna looks and sounds just as good as she did back in the beginning. She moves far better than anyone half her age, and her voice is fresh and vibrant as ever. I always admired Madonna for her "bad girl" image, but have a whole new appreciation for her since buying the "I'm Going to tell you a secret" and `TCT' CD & DVDs. Only negative comment I have is this: Perhaps yes, the CD should've had more material on it? Perhaps an unreleased bonus track or two?

Madonna's personality on and offstage is remarkable and her costumes this time around are fab and the dancers and choreography are incredible. This truly is a 'Show' and not a concert. I did want to mention something: The voice in the intro of "Sorry" does sound a lot like Neil Tennant from `Pet Shop Boys', yet he's not credited anywhere in the booklet. As for the DTS 5.1 sound, I don't care, as long as I can see/hear the show, since I watch all my concert DVDs from my computer anyway. Picture/Sound quality is great. Having the DVD is all that should really matter, no? At least we got something at all, considering there wasn't an official release of `Reinvention Tour' on DVD.

Let me talk about the packaging. DVD and CD are housed inside a matte double digipack with attached booklet. The booklet (19 pages) feature lots of footage from the show, song & concert production credits and other stuff. Inner right flap features silhouette of a horse on a creamy pinkish-white background. Meanwhile, the DVD is black with the silhouette of a running horse in white. The CD features Madonna's white silhouette on a black background. The backside of the digipack features DVD tracks first, then CD tracks, bonus material and information pertaining to the product & formatting.

5 out of 5 stars Mind blowing!   January 31, 2007

I totally agree with many of my fellow reviewers, the NBC special was terrible! How could anyone appreciate and enjoy this concert with all those commercials and that awful editing! I was lucky to see this concert, as I have seen most of Madonna's live shows, they are all unique. Every concert has a theme and she manages to create a show built around her and the audience. She is mesmerizing! Can't wait to hit the gym with my new "Confessions CD"! If you want to see how a concert should be done, grab this! She is worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Great show, wonderful preformance, a must see   February 4, 2007

"The Confessions Tour" really is a must see DVD. The show itself is remarkable, it is a huge undertaking by the best of the best - Madonna. She shines throughout the preformance. My favorite moment is "Future Lovers/I Feel Love." Madonna proves that she has talent on this one, as her voice hits all the notes of Donna Summer's classic synth-disco song. I also love the way she smoothly segued into I Feel Love, after singing Future Lovers like the talented ARTIST she is. Madonna again proves that she has talent on a track cut from the NBC special, which shouldn't have been, "Drowned World/Substitute for Love." Not only is she stunningly beautiful while singing this, but her singing is stunningly beautiful. It really touched me. I really love the remixes Mrs. Ritchie used during her concert - "Like a Virgin" flows after "Future Lovers", "Sorry" is the Pet Shop Boys version which is really cool, "Ray of Light" is a rockn'roll light show, "Let it Will Be" channels a tribal vibe, "Music Inferno" is so awesome with its mashup with "Disco Inferno" and the cool video interlude followed by a midsection of "Where's the Party", following that is the "You Thrill Me" version of "Erotica" which is a fine example of uplifting house music that is beautifully sung with an awesome mix, "La Isla Bonita" retains its spanish vibe but received an update, and a real stunner is "Lucky Star" that channels an electronic vibe into "Hung Up" which closes the show like the show-stopper it is. Some fun moments are when Madonna says "Yeah! We can do anything" and when she thanks her crew. It was wonderfully choreographed and she can dance better than her good dancers. As for special features, its cool to see her practice and get everything together but it would have been cool to have a music video or two on there.

As for the CD, I really love it. Her vocals are stunning, the remaster work is great, and appreciation of her talent can be had. I am puzzeled as to why she chose the dancer's "Confessions" interlude for inclusion. It isn't really music, and without "Live to Tell" it isn't great. I think she should have put "Drowned World" on it instead. Besides that, I had a slight issue with "Let it Will Be." The song itself (which is the Paper Faces mix) is awesome, but her vocals are a little throaty. But after dancing and preforming, whose voice wouldn't tire? Anyways if there was any reason to have this it is for "I Feel Love." But the CD still does get a five star rating in my book.

As for packaging, the CD and DVD looks great with a silohette of Madonna and a horse (it looks like the Jump CD single art) and the booklet is really great. The pictures inside are screengrabs from the DVD, and are blended with some cool artwork. The package itself is prone to bending at the corners and getting little dents here and there, as it is made of cardboard.

Now to the big controversy. "Live to Tell" is included in its unedited version, as opposed to the botched NBC version. It is a truly remarkable thing to see Madonna with a crown of thorns being raised on a "disco" crucifix. Regardless of your religious opinion, one must say that she doing something, that is, she is getting people to talk, which may lead to a difference in the world. Communication is key. I was awed by Madonna, she is a oftentimes a misunderstood and underestimated prophet. Watching Live to Tell will hopefully open at least one person up to change.

All in all, I couldn't have spent my money better. I only wish I had the opportunity to see her when the tour came to Chicago. I would love to hug her and tell her what a wonderful woman she is. Instead of the indie crap on the radio now, pop this DVD into your player and listen to a goddess.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the NBC version   January 31, 2007
11 out of 14 found this review helpful

The NBC version was a travesty. It was chopped up to accomodate a billion commercials, with up to 5 minutes or more between songs. Then we all had to be deprived of "Live To Tell" because of some sanctimonious station managers who refused to air it (though, I should note, those same managers have no problem airing violent programming). No wonder the broadcast bombed!

I saw Confessions live and didnt think it was as good as her last one, but even so this DVD is fantastic. The concert is beautifully filmed, and sounds great blasting through a good set of speakers. And "Live To Tell" is fully intact, and features some gorgeous close-ups of Madonna as she's singing.

There is also a good (if short) behind-the-scenes doc, filmed at the rehearsals, that conveys just how much grind and sweat goes into pulling off a production like this.

Only quibble: the selection on the CD is puzzling. They should have included the lovely "Paradise" (heck, it's better than the original album version!).
