Editorial Reviews:

Description
Alceste--now on DVD! An operatic event to celebrate the reopening of the Anna Amalia library in Weimar. The story of Alceste, as found in Greek mythology, was one of the most popular stories used in opera in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Schweitzer/Wieland Alceste, first performed in 1772, was a huge success. In the story, the king of Thessaly weds Alceste, but when he becomes ill, she offers to give her own life in place of his. After her death, Hercules travels to the underworld, where he asks Pluto to restore Alceste to her husband, and the two are joyfully reunited.

This performance features sopranos Simone Schneider and Cyndia Sieden, tenor Christoph Genz, and bass Josef Wagner as well as the Concerto Koeln and Kammerchor Michaelstein conducted by Michael Hofstetter.
