Amazon.com "Apoplectic" is the word to describe Lewis Black's 2006 engagement at Washington DC's Warner Theater. There's eye-crossing, teeth-gnashing, raspy-voiced yelling, and liberal use of the f-word. (As Black reveals, the Kennedy Center refused their facilities on the grounds that he used the word 42 times in his first hour-long HBO special.) Then again, George W. Bush's second term has given the comedian much to be apoplectic about--Dick Cheney's hunting mishap, airport (in)security, the president's support of creationism, and the inanity of 24-hour cable news. At one point, he admits, "I just can't keep up with all the...stuff," although that isn't his exact phrase. Lest potential viewers think Black (The Daily Show, Black on Broadway) is nothing but a blue state apologist, he makes his distaste for John Kerry clear, i.e. "The fact of the matter is for the Democrats not to be able to find somebody who could've defeated George Bush is beyond belief--it's stunning." Black also explores misconceptions about Judaism, the media obsession with Terry Schiavo, and myths about the "homosexual agenda," which is to say: there isn't one. A few too many excretory jokes aside, Black otherwise makes good points and produces hearty laughs--some from his proud parents, who are part of the audience. As for the extras, they're brief, but amusing, and English is the only audio option. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Crying and Screaming October 19, 2006 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
We were crying with laughter and screaming at the TV. Not only do I recommend that you buy this DVD, I'm going to buy copies for my friends.
I haven't seen his other DVDs, so I can't comment on whether those are better. You'll have to rely on the other reviewers for that. But during my years living in Washington DC, I saw my share of comics at the Warner Theater and I can assure you, Lewis Black KILLS!!
Razor sharp, topical humor delivered with the kind of righteous anger that makes you leap off the couch and yell "YES!!" His comments on current events in America are spot-on and neither side of the political aisle escapes his withering assessment.
So gather some friends, open the libation of your choice, turn on the DVD and let the crying and screaming begin!
good but hard to top his previous work July 23, 2006 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Personally, I thought Lewis Black's "Black on Broadway" was quite a bit better but I'd put this one in at second place out of all of his multimedia work. He doesn't get as pissed off and exasperated in this one and sometimes even seems like the emotion is forced. I know it must be hard to get pissed off every show just to satisfy an audience so can't really complain about him, he has some great points....there's a good bit about how America is building a 700 mile long fence to keep the mexicans out but we can't even build the levies in New Orleans after the hurricane disaster....hehe....anyway, this DVD is good and is mostly new material sorta but if you don't have Black on Broadway, go for that one...or save that one as best for last...
COMEDY FOR ADULTS November 23, 2006 11 out of 22 found this review helpful
OK, LEWIS IS, SHALL I SAY, FUNNY. HE'LL TAKE HIS VIEW OF THINGS TO A SURREALISTIC CONCEPTION DEFINED BY "ADULT" PHRASING TO ACHIEVE HIS GOAL: TO MAKE US LAUGH. ADULT WORDS AND PHRASING HEREIN REFERS TO LANGUAGE AS USED IN REAL LIFE, AS OPPOSED TO A POLITICALLY CORRECT AND POLITICALLY CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT. WORDS ARE WORDS, AND IF THEY ARE IN WEBSTER, IF WEBSTER CAN USE THEM, WHY NOT LEWIS? SOME FRIENDS OF MINE ARE WOUND SO TIGHT IN THEIR SENSITIVE RELIGIOUS COCOONS THEY CANNOT ENJOY GOOD COMEDY BECAUSE THEIR GOD ABSOLUTELY FORBIDS THEM LISTENING TO OR SUPPORTING ANYTHING CONSIDERED ADULT COMEDY. TO EACH HIS/HER OWN: AS FOR ME, GIVE ME MORE LEWIS BLACK, PLEASE.
Lewis At His Best October 8, 2006 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I laughed from beginning to end. This Lewis at his best.
Just pertaining to the performance October 11, 2006 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
The first half of this is all new and it's great stuff.
However, the second half of this is stuff he's done on previous albums. Considering how he said there are so many things for him to write jokes about that when new things keep happening each day that he can't keep up with them...Well, why not leave the old things where you've already done them and do new material instead?
I'm a pretty big fan of his comedy but I wouldn't buy this.
Although, it's still worth watching a few times because of the way Lewis Black's face looks when he gets mad (which is most of the time).
