Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Formerly the lead singer of Trick Pony, Heidi Newfield steps into the next career chapter with her solo debut, What Am I Waiting For. The album features six tracks co-written by Heidi including the album's crown jewel, Johnny & June. Of the album, Heidi remarks, I really was only interested in cutting a record that was going to step out and have some relevance in this day and age, when we are head-to-toe in pop culture, videos and imagery...we don' t always listen with our ears anymore, we listen with our eyes. The album s depth showcases Heidi' s trademark vocals in the stunning despair of Wreck You, the inspiring title track What Am I Waiting For and the raucous and hilarious Knocked Up.

Heidi Newfield has come into her own with this cd. There is Love and heartbreak on this cd. This is one cd that i can really relate to. I loved Trick Pony and when i heared that she was leave the group i was sad but at the same time was excited to see what she could do on her own. I heard Johnny and June and i fell in love with it. Can't stop listening to it.

3 out of 5 stars Newfield has More "Waiting" to Do   August 9, 2008

Prime Cuts: All I Wanna Do, Wreck You, Love Her and Lose Me

Call it group politics or call it creative differences, but three is always a crowd. Trios in country music never last-this is evident in Sugarland and now Trick Pony. After about 10 years as the front lady of the high-energy trio, Heidi Newfield announced in 2006 that she was leaving her band mates Ira Dean and Keith Burns. Such an unpropitious move usually has two entailments: first, it leads to the dissemination of the group, which did happen when this February Trick Pony called it quits. Second, since expectations are high for Heidi Newfield coming out of the success of the band, her solo debut can mean life and death for her. Thus far, her lucky stars seem to be shinning on her as lead single "Johnny and June" is already racing up the upper echelon of the chart. So, how does "What You Are Waiting for" compare to her Trick Pony products? By teaming up with producer Tony Brown (George Strait's right hand man), Newfield has decided to cover the whole melange of modern country: from the slick big-voiced anthemic "Johnny and June," to the edgy left-of-center Lucinda Williams' "Can't Let Go" to the soft balladry of "Love Her and Lose Me." The plethora of songwriters (from Dean Dillon to Leslie Satcher to Jeffrey Steele) further affirms.

Among the tracks worthy of mention is the Dean Dillon co-write "Love Her and Lose Me." Chilling half-spoken lines introduces this adulterous ballad as Newfield comes to terms with her cheating spouse with curiousity (as to what the other woman looks like) as well as hurt. Not since Roseanne Cash's "Paralyzed" has adultery been presented in its stark atrocity. While "Love Her and Lose Me" is an oft-beat understated ballad of love at the pits, "All I Wanna Do" is a power ballad exalting in the glories of love's euphoria. Lori McKenna who has been known for her acerbic views of relationships gets a slot here with her self-penned "Wreck You." Dark, introspective, depreciative, and deliciously alluring, Newfield does a stellar job here with a delivery that oozes with a nocturnal angst.

Name dropping seems to be in vogue these days: "Johnny and June," a thumping guitar-driven uptempo, tells of Newfield's admiration for the longevity of Johnny and June Cash's wedding. Newfield shows her rootsier side with the opener "Can't Let Go" (a track that was first recorded by Lucinda Williams). Its banjo picking licks and cascading guitar lines give Newfield a break from contemporary country transporting her to the Americana soundscape. However, the rest of the CD veers on the pedantic. There's a reason while "Cry Cry (`Til the Sun Shines)" was not released as a single from Martina McBride's "Wake Up Laughing" CD, its self-help message is puerile. The lapse of morality of "Knocked Up" with "Knocked up/Shame shame/I'm a-gonna ruin my family name/Here comes what Granny's been dreading/A belly full of baby and a shotgun wedding" is not the best way to end the CD.

For a debut CD, this s an uneven CD, there are some sublime cuts here while the others borders on the ordinary. If Newfield is looking for success in the long haul, there's much waiting she has to do.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Debut Cd From Heidi Newfield   August 13, 2008

Heidi Newfield decided to take the leap and go solo, after being with the great band Trick Pony. This cd has a little bit of everything, not like the cookie-cutter junk that passes for country music these days.
The disc opens with Can't Let Go, one that starts off with just a few instruments, then the whole band kicks in and rocks it up a notch. When Tears Fall Down comes next, a mid-tempo song with layered background vocals that flow very smoothly with the song. Next we have the hit single Johnny And June, a song about finding that one true love, and already a fan favorite at Heidi's live shows. The title track, What Am I Waiting For, comes next and was co-written by ex-bandmates from Trick Pony, Ira Dean and Keith Burns, with help from Jeffrey Steele. A song with lyrics about taking risks and doing what you really want to do, and set to a bouncy melody. The fifth song is Love Her And Lose Me, a ballad about adultery and wondering about the other woman. Cry Cry ('Til The Sun Shines) is next, and is a catchy song, more of the country/pop variety. Next we have Wreck You, a very haunting and beautiful song that definitely stays in your head. Nothing Burns Like A Memory recalls the type of music that Trick Pony did, and Ira Dean is one of the writers on the song. Next is All I Wanna Do. A very slow song, and Heidi's voice has never sounded sexier than it does here. The cd closes with "Knocked Up", a song that has single potential, and is a fun song. I love this whole cd and have been listening to it contantly since it came out.
Heidi really sings on this cd in ways we didn't get to hear when she was in Trick Pony, and also was one of the writers on six of the songs. This cd is an amazing start to Heidi's solo career, and you can hear the effort she put into this.
Watch for Heidi opening some show for Brooks and Dunn this summer, and also touring solo.

5 out of 5 stars What we've been waiting for!   August 25, 2008

Heidi has done it again. She's created a great CD with songs that reflect her many talents as both songwriter and singer. She says it all in the song her grandmother says is her favorite-What Am I Waiting For-when she shows us what we've been waiting for - another hit CD. You've still got it, Heidi, and we love it! Her gutsy voice reflects the feeling behind the well-written words in the songs and I know it's been worth waiting for. Great job and great CD.
