This is gothic ROCK!! March 13, 2003 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
With an emphasis on the ROCK. Sorry kids, no dark electro, or necrotech here. Sure there are similarities to The Cramps and The Misfits, but did you know that before they were considered "Psychobilly", the Cramps were usually considered a Goth band? Yeah it's punky. But guess what? Goth came from punk!! Most early goth bands were punk bands, or post punk. Before "Goth" became associated with dark electro, ambient and fetish piffle, it was pure rock and roll. I DARE you to go to a Goth club and say that bands like Bauhaus, Christian Death, Specimen and Alien Sex Fiend aren't Goth. You probably won't walk out again. So if you're looking for modern synthpop or boring, fetishy music, or think Goth is all about vinyl corsettes, multi-colored dread lock extensions and Switchblade Symphony, look elsewhere. If you are a real Goth or Deathrocker and want REAL Goth rock, check out this comp, and the rest of them as well. That being said, there are some awesome songs here. My favorites are the creepy and nightmarish "I Walk The LIne" by Alien Sex Fiend, the dark and almost vampiric glam punk of Specimen's "Hex", The Cult's "Spiritwalker", and the Goth anthem "Passion Of Lovers" by the original Gothic Rock band Bauhaus.
A great introduction October 23, 1999 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This was my introduction to gothic music. You get a real feel for what is out there because there is lots of diversity in the genre. There was a dearth of crappy songs, there's only 2 or 3 of those. You've gotta play Hex by Specimen - it's just perfect!! I guess I this little puppy taught me that goth doesnt have to be sad, it can be a little happy and playful and still be true to its roots as in the March Violets - Walk Into the Sun.
goth or not goth. WHO CARES! November 16, 2002 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
if you're buying this album to get a taste of the goth scene, forget it! this is old goth rock that's not done anymore. but it still rocks! i love alien sex fiend and christian death. some might say these bands play death rock and industrial music, etc Well i dont care as long as the music is good, and has feeling. like every compilation, this one has its fillers but everybody will find 5 or 6 favorites. so again, if you want to hear the latest in goth music fashion DONT buy this. instead, get 'unquiet grave' or some similar compilation.
horribly outdated January 12, 2000 2 out of 11 found this review helpful
It's really sad that some people might judge gothic genre by this compilation. Most of the songs are horrid punk-with-eyliner-on moshpit nonsense. (e.g. TERRIBLE Cure cover) If you are into stuff like Misfits or Cramps you are gonna find more then one "gem" to play with on this double, but if you are looking for an intro to actual gothic music pass it on and pick up something more fresh & tasteful. (Prefferably not one of Cleopatra compilations)
