A fun(ny) and well crafted album. June 12, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The songs on this album are as all very fun and catchy sing along type songs. The cool thing about this album are the awsome lyrics that makes the music so interesting. This album is fairly raw compared to the other Handsome Family discs which is not a bad thing. It creates a country punk type of atmosphere. There is really nothing fancy I can say about this album except for its a good solid realease.
Something took a hold of me... July 7, 2000 This is a fantastic album in that it gives the listener the real roots of the husband and wife duo Brett and Rennie Sparks (a.k.a the Handsome Family). It was back in the day when they were still in a transitional period and finding their musical direction. There are songs that are precursors of their current Carter Family influenced alt.country/folk/whatever you want to call it (Arlene, Water Into Wine), there are songs of the indie pop sound that they left behind (The Last, Giant Ant) and there are some of a sound light years away from anything they sound like now (Gorilla). Even though there is some incongruity with the song styles it offers an interesting road map of the possible directions that this truly talented band could have gone in. All that said "Arlene" is worth the price of the album alone. Truly an instant classic.
A New Kind Of Country October 9, 2001 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'd heard a lot of different things about the Handsome Family before I bought this album. I have to say that it isn't nearly as weird or different as people had made it out to be. This album shows that great country music doesn't have to sound like the Carter Family or Garth Brooks. Some of the songs are a little different (e.g. "Big Bad Wolf" and "Happy Harvest") but that only makes this record more enjoyable.
