you either get it or you don't July 17, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The first couple of tracks are classic industrial tone poetry, 'Nag Nag Nag' (one of my all-time fave CV tracks) sounds like '77 punk rock performed on a Casio and mutilated on a garage-sale four-track. Now, you either like CV or you don't -- musically, I'd say they are to music what Jackson Pollock was to painting: abstract, conceptual and free-form. If you like experimental music, then your CD collection would be unfashionably incomplete without at least one CV record. It's the perfect music for such activities as say, a Saturday night acid party, reading a Philip K. Dick novel, or driving around aimlessly while questioning the social alienation of modern existence. THe only thing I don't like about this CD is the packaging: silver text on a light grey background is impossible to read (and it looks pretty ugly too).
I am set up , I am problem December 4, 2002 This is early Cabaret Voltaire material at it's best . It takes a while to get into if you are new to the Cab's but all in all it is one to enjoy once you get used to it
Good But Not Complete January 11, 2008 This is an essential compilation if you're looking to explore Cabaret Voltaire in their DIY, pre-major label phase from (as the dates say) 1977-82. If this is the case, this compilation pretty much covers all the bases. If you've moved beyond Cabaret Voltaire 101, however, there might appear to be some glaring omissions. "On Any Other Street" from Mix-Up, "Sly Doubt" and "Black Mask" from Red Mecca, and "Breathe Deep" and "War of Nerves" from 2x45 would all have been nice additions. And a live track such as "Three Day Monk" from Hai! Live in Japan would have been a good taste for the neophyte of the funky chaos that the band was capable of live. If you find this compilation to your taste, I would recommend moving on to the stronger of the studio albums (Red Mecca, 2x45) as well as the compilation The Living Legends. If you're just starting out, that last one will baffle you at first, but trust me - stick with it and you'll be amply rewarded. If you are searching out the big-label, more commercial version of Cabaret Voltaire, then you've stumbled on to the wrong compilation in picking up 78-82; the one you want is The Original Sound of Sheffield 83-87.
