His Infernal Majesty May 27, 2000 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is the best rock bands to come out Europe ever! The songs on this album are amazing! being a blend of gothic metal and rock, HIM have beautifully written lyrics with songs like 'Right here in my arms' and 'Greatest Love songs 666'. Ville Vado's voice is incredible ranging from Peter Steele deep to soft and melodic. The cover version of Chris Isaak's wicked game is great (although not as good as the version on HIM's first album). This album is definitely worth spending your mney on no matter what kind of rock music you are into! The only shame is the fact that they still are not as successful as they should be due to the fact that they have only been around in Europe but in Europe they are huge having top 5 hits and winning almost every award a new band can win! BUY THIS ALBUM, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT - also if yu get the chance wacth them live
The TRUE definition of Gothic Music February 16, 2001 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
As you may or may not know, the term "gothic" was born from the literary and artistic Romantic movement in the 19th Century. So naturally, when one thinks about Gothic music, one also should find the romantic element as well.Razorblade Romance is genuinely Gothic. HIM mixes the elements of tragedy and romance as well as Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet, the two intertwined until the end. Ville Valo's deep lethargic voice sends the words straight to the heart while a guitar mimics the lyric's sentiment with its riffs. I bought this album a month ago after hearing "Gone with the Sin" on the radio. Since then, Razorblade Romance has remained on the top of my "Most Played" list and has led me to buy all of HIM's previous albums. For those of you who think that Marilyn Manson and NIN are the definition of "gothic," LISTEN UP! Lend an ear to this Finnish band and I promise that you won't be disappointed. For those of you who are suckers for romance and deep voices (myself included) this should DEFINATELY be on your "To Buy" list! :) PS: To learn more about this awesome band, go to their web site at ...!! :)
I just love this group! February 25, 2000 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Wow! ... and I thought that Greatest Lovesongs was excellent.... this is even better! The songs just make you drift off into another world, reality seems to disappear! There are more of the melodic ballards found in their first album, slightly less heavy and not so "noisy", but still sung by Valo's amazingly deep "Type O Negative - esque" voice. Don't hesitate to buy this, you won't regret it, I rate it as the best album I have bought in the last 5 years..... easily!
Mindblowing! August 7, 2000 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I heard the Your Sweet 666 single, and went out and bought this album the very next day! The music is rocky, yet melodic, the vocals are BEAUTIFUL, the lyrics are a little simplistic maybe, but darkly melancholically appealing none-the-less (and when you consider that it's not the writer's first language...). I have become completely addicted to this band, so this album needs a warning sticker attached - if you do buy it, be prepared to find yourself hunting high and low for everything of HIM's you can get your grubby mits on, and unless you're in Germany or Finland, that isn't likely to be much. Saying that however, the HIM internet community are in general a friendly helpful bunch.... I'd say if you like Type O Negative, Paradise Lost, 80's rock/metal, and you're a dark romantic type of person, you'll like this.
incredibly good August 1, 2000 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Feel tired of a rap-punk-alterna-metal sound? Get the cd - you will not only have a break, you'll get an extreme pleasure, since HIM really rocks, and the music is INCREDIBLY GOOD. Besides it's rather unique, it's like a portion of a fresh air in a highly polluted city. No matter how one calls it - hard rock, or gothic metal, or whatever - the music is surprisingly powerful and impressing. The tunes are catchy, the rythm is unbelievable, the leading vocal is just unforgettable. You can hardly find anything that sounds at least slightly similar, or as much refreshing. A nice surprise for those who have never known HIM is the ballads. Anyone would enjoy Gone with the Sin and Bury Me Deep Inside. Good news for those who forgot or never knew what hard rock is is Razorblade Kiss, a very modern tune to please everyone - from fans of Dum Dums to listeners of Metallica. As for the staff like Poison Girl and Death Is In Love with Us, these are the coolest rockers on the cd, and most of those who sometimes listen to something more serious than Britney and NSYNC would be really blown away. A slight doubt for guys used to what Bloodhound Gang sings is lyrics, but, as you know, nobody's perfect, just try to get used to that dying mood - death happens anyway. My personal top 4 of the cd - 1.Poison Girl, 2.Razorblade Kiss, 3.Bury Me Deep, 4. Gone With the Sin. Don't hesitate to buy this, especially if it's an import version for you, don't miss a rare chance to find what you have been looking for for so long. And give a little rest to the Foos, Korn and Blink.
