The greatest August 5, 2006
This personally to me is HIMs' best album ever. The pacing/vocals/music. Everything is so right on this album.
I like all the HIM music, but I literally listen to this one everyday.
One of the few perfect albums. March 18, 2007
This album is an essential one, but it also is a decisive one. If you are someone who had been eyeing HIM shyly, this is the album that will decide whether you like the band or despise it. The definitive HIM/romantic gothic rock album is this one right here.
I will cut to the chase. The lyrics are entirely amazing, dealing with Love and Death, but intertwines the concepts and uses them as if they were always served side-by-side or were accomplices or were interchangeable. The atmosphere of the album never wavers and always verges on tragedy, sometimes avoiding it narrowly to switch to despair. Valo's vocals is at their top form; you can't help but think he is barely holding on, and will go to cry in a bathroom somewhere after the recording is done. The solos are incredible, and some of them, such as the one in "Right Here In My Arms" make you wonder if that's a guitar or somehow-plugged vines. The fat guitar sound aids this album. It has a couple of nice ballads, such as "Heaven Tonight", the classic "Gone With the Sin" and "Resurrection"; atmospheric pieces such as "Bury Me Deep Inside Your Heart", "I Love You", "Razorblade Kiss", "Right Here In My Arms"; custom designed for yer needs.
There's only a downside, and it is in THIS particular version of the album. The version that starts with "I Love You (Prelude to Tragedy)" instead of a remixed "Your Sweet Six Six Six" is better, because the remixed Chris Isaac cover "Wicked Game" disturbs the atmosphere of the album greatly, and launches into a bar song amidst the teary-eyed songs. I recommend you to acquire the aforementioned version instead of that, simply because it is a perfect album. No loose ends, no disturbances, nothing. Just great flow of music that will keep you hooked. Razorblade Romance is a classic.
