Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
As Greatest Hits--and particularly the busking pavement jazz of "Lovecats"--reminds us, the best Cure singles were very often tangential exercises; they offered a goth-free playtime divergence from some of the weightier studiousness of those early albums. Or, as smudged frontman Robert Smith says of this 18-track collection, "Songs that are sung with a smile." This wasn't always true--witness the refrigerated fogginess of the classic "A Forest," the Blair Witch Project of its day. What this compilation does is focus attention on the Cure's perennial unpredictability--the breathless claustrophobia of "Close to Me," the New Order-lite of "The Walk," the brass- section embellished thrust of "Why Can't I Be You." Oddly, chart-wise, the Cure's lost weekend began immediately after "Friday I'm in Love," their most ebullient melodic moment and the ultimate "clocking-off to kick those heels" anthem. But at least the inclusion of two new songs, "Cut Here" and "Just Say Yes" (with Saffron from Republica), indicate that the Cure remain a healthy, ongoing concern. --Kevin Maidment

2 out of 5 stars absolute drivel from an amazing band.   November 18, 2001

Unfortunately, this is not the album to give you a retrospective of The Cure's greatest hits. It is an abysmal repackaging of 2 of their other compliations, with many of their signature songs left off. Plus, the Acoustic versions of the 'hits' are atrocious. They are dry, uninspired, and plain hard to listen to. Look to The Cure's other albums (all of them - except for this one) and you will find a truly astonishing band. Don't let this album ruin them for you.

2 out of 5 stars CD1: redone, CD2: disappointing   December 18, 2001

As the owner of over 60 Cure CD's, of course I had to get this one. However, after listening to them, I wish I'd spent the money on something worthwhile.

CD1: Been there, done that.

CD2: [The real motive for this purchase, no?] Well it's always fun to hear your favorite songs done in a different way. HOWEVER, these tracks are so hard to listen to, I couldn't hardly finish the CD. There are a couple tracks that are *almost* palatable, but in general they are so *uninspired* it's embarrassing. Coming soon to an elevator near you... Also, to ensure you are clear on this, this 'unplugged' CD, is NOT the same as the "MTV Unplugged" acoustical performance which was absolutely beautiful (and not really available commercially).

Note to Cure curious: Spend your money on ANY other CD from this wonderful band.

Note to Cure hardcore: Don't spend your money on these CDs only to get a weird feeling about the band.

Note to Robert: Shame on you! Even if you weren't "into" making these tracks, you should have at least tried for the sake of the fans. You've NEVER let me down with your live performances. Oh yeah, and you don't have to e-n-u-n-c-i-a-t-e your words to the point of speaking them my friend.

4 out of 5 stars Reverse the discs and you'll like it a LOT more.   May 15, 2004

Yes, as posted here by many others, this is not a really strong representation of The Cure. It completely zaps a few important songs that WERE hits, like "Pictures of You" and "Hot Hot Hot," and hardly scratches the surface of the pre-MTV era Cure. If you need those songs, get "Staring At The Sea" and "Galore" as a twofer.

On the other hand, if you're a Cure buff, the bonus disc is a treat. All 18 songs from the "Hits" disc, played out acoustically and live in studio. The band sounds loose and chipper, obviously having a jolly good time with songs they've done to death. I'd have bought THAT as a single disc without any complaints! So just consider the live CD the main attraction and the studio "A" disc as the bonus. You'll like "Greatest Hits" a lot more that way.

3 out of 5 stars Why?   November 13, 2001

The Cure's new greatest hits CD covers their whole catalog, but I can't understand the reasoning behind this album. All this material is availiable on the other compilation cd's and in a more complete manor. The bonus disc of live acoustic stuff sounds awful, like a lounge act performing the music with no energy. Don't buy this CD to get the acoustic disc. I did and I wish I hadn't. Buy "Staring at the Sea" and "Galore" if you want all the greatest hits. I am really disapointed.

1 out of 5 stars another "filler" album   November 17, 2001

robert smith and the cure have really turned into a pathetic bunch. only 3 years and 11 months after GALORE, we are expected to buy another hits collection. Lets review the CURE's output - 1978 to 1992 - 9 studio albums, 3 collections (Boys dont cry was a compilation, Japanese Whispers, Standing on the Beach), 2 live albums, 1 remix album. 1993 to 2001 - 2 studio albums, 2 live albums, 1 live EP, 1 instrumental cassette, 2 hit collections, and handful of tracks for movies. the cure are the next rolling stones. pathetic.
