Nightwish is one of the most talented bands around today. Their blend of metal with classical, and opera makes it a very unique listen. Many hardcore metal fans, simply by hearing `opera' wouldn't even give Nightwish a chance. Personally, I listen to death metal, and melodic death (in flames, arch enemy, at the gates, carcass, ect...) and I love Nightwish. Anyone who likes this band should get the box set, and the live DVD (if you can still find it, look on ebay). Enjoy.
Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean March 22, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
After purchasing 'Oceanborn' - my exposure to the Finnish quintet, Nightwish - I could not get myself to order another album of theirs for the longest time. I was so completely blown away by what I heard here I feared I'd be disappointed with anything else they had previously released. My expectations were indeed set high, and while their latest LP 'Once' is really very good it pales in comparison to the greatness found within this disc that consistently churns out hit after hit. The moment you press play your psyche will be sucked deep into their vortex of no return as the opening guitar and drum riffs on "Stargazers" invade your speakers, captivating you utterly with harsh sonic soundscapes that are elegantly brutal. The instruments pound with beautiful intensity, and female fronted singer, Tarja, has a uniquely distinct operatic vocal style you'll naught soon forget...
The tone of the music may shift from being metal, melodic, and at times progressive, but one thing remains the same: their ability to be ethereal whilst retaining their hard rock edge. I, however, highly recommend you get your hands on a copy of this limited European tour edition if you can for it includes three bonus tracks - one of which is a gorgeous ballad "Sleeping Sun", closing on a dreamy note, making the journey from beginning to end all worthwhile.
