5 out of 5 stars Thrash metal lives!   October 23, 2007

I'll keep this review short but sweet.

If you liked Tempo of the Damned and especially Shovel Headed Kill Machine, you'll like this new one quite a bit. It doesn't so much deviate from what Exodus was doing on those last 2 albums as it builds on them. The brutality is cranked up even more and this is most evident in the guitar tones which are brutal, razor sharp and just plain mean! Listen to this one cranked on headphones to hear what I'm talking about. The rhythm section just pummels along taking no prisoners. Vocals are very aggressive while still managing to be melodic. Andy Sneap's production is crystal clear as it was on the last 2 albums as well.

Thrash metal is my favorite type of metal and hardly anybody does it right anymore. Exodus is the exception to that rule and hopefully the new Testament CD will along with this one show all of these pointless and pathetic scream-o metal bands how the big boys do it!

BTW, I should mention that there is some kind of weird pressing error or something right when track one ends and track 2 begins. Instead of going straight from one into another which sounds like that was what was intended, there is about a half second gap of silence. I checked out 2 other copies and they were all the same way so don't think you've got a defective copy. It's annoying and I'm not sure if they intended for it to be like that but oh well.

5 out of 5 stars Exodus scores again   November 28, 2007

Since 1999, we've had a sort of resurgence in classic thrash metal bands like Overkill, Kreator, Testament, and many others. Over the past few years, we've seen the release of monumental albums such as Exodus' "Tempo Of The Damned" & "Shovel Headed Kill Machine," Kreator's "Enemy Of God," Overkill's triple decker "Killbox 13, "Relix IV," & "Immortalis," Slayer's "Christ Illusion," and Megadeth's "United Abominatons." Need I go on? To add insult to injury, Exodus has delivered another thrash metal classic....not once, but twice. Think Tempo & Shovel times 100, and then some. Once again, Andy Sneap's production and mixing abilities are put on full display. I can't stress it enough, everything is very audible: the bass, guitars, and drums. Warning: you may become more susceptible to ears bleeding. Need I mention Tom Hunting is back behind the kit? While Paul Bostaph annihilated on Shovel, Tom has surprisingly managed to make his return very apparent on this album. Now, if you were paying attention, you might have noticed I pointed out that Exodus has delivered not once, but twice. In case you don't know what that means, Exodus has planned on two albums, this one being the first of the two: Exhibit A. Exhibit B will be out in 2008. If this album is any indication, fans will have plenty to bang their heads to.

4 out of 5 stars Typical EXODUS... Very solid   October 23, 2007

Great stuff here. the Guitars shred and are in your face! The singer sounds decent enough, but its really about the riffs. They shred! Track by track run downs arent my thing, but as a whole it works fantastic!

Exodus now has 3 solid Cd's since reforming. Lack of some original members, But that doesnt matter at this point.. If you liked the last disc (SHKM)you will love this! Its just as heavy but not as forced. (not that the cd was bad by any means)
If you didnt get the last one, i suggest you get this first. It is better overall. Great sound quality as well. The Guitar comes at you like a saw!

They were ahead of their time in '85 and are still writing new thrash rules. Highly recommend to all metal heads. I thank Gary Holt for keeping the legacy alive. To all those who dont see this as 'Exodus' because of lineup changes, FORGET IT! Its awesome. Well worth it.

3 out of 5 stars The godfather's of the Thrash metal return part 3   November 2, 2007

As with any Exodus album it is all about the riffs. And the guitars shred on this release as any of the prior releases. The most disappointing thing about "Shovel Headed Kill Machine" was the absence of Rick Hunolt and Tom Hunting (maybe even Steve Souza to a much lesser degree). SHKM made up for all that by being a more than competent, super brutal,
much-harder-than-usual Exodus album. Here we have a two part album, hence the "Exhibit A" in the title. On the plus side we have all the prior SHKM album members and the original Exodus drummer Tom Hunting is back. Andy Sneap (remember Sabbat?) makes the production ultra punchy and is a welcome addition to the Exodus product.

All of this should be a plus, but the main problem with this album is that it tries to be too much. One only need to look at the length of the songs to realize that (minus the opener) only one song makes it under the 5 minute mark and four songs are more than 7 minutes. There are plenty of cool riffs, but the song writing doesn't hold up to make the extra long songs necessary and in some cases it makes the riffs get old. The "epic song" was attempted by many a Thrash metal band but few could pull it off successfully: "...And Justice for All" comes to mind, Dark Angel's "Time Does Not Heal", or Anacrusis. Oddly enough, a lot of the problems here are the same problems with "Impact is Imminent".

Rob Dukes vocals are less in your face than on SHKM and blend better as opposed to battling with the music. I don't know how much Lee Altus has a say in the songwriting process, but the opening line on "Children of a Worthless God" sounds like something from the Heathen cutting floor circa 1991. Tom Hunting's drum style is quite different than the prior Bostaph. However, the performance here doesn't match that of "Tempo of the Damned". It is almost like the guy is holding back. A nice thing about this album is the punk/hardcore moments that sometimes shine through. Exodus is more than old enough a band to exploit that connection and they do it well. It sounds incredibly natural.

The album has it's moments, but the guitars hold the day and some tracks are all too easily skipable. This album should be enough to quench any Exodus fan's thirst for no frills Thrash metal done by the original kings of the genre. Two favorite for me are "As it was, as it soon shall be" and "The atrocity exhibition" (the only song that deserves its length). A good album that stands on its own, but not up to par with the hype or "Shovel Headed Kill Machine" or "Tempo of the Damned".
