Stunning! March 26, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There are very few albums in which I like EVERY single song. Serpentine Gallery is one of those albums. Beautiful,Atmospheric,Dark,Stunning I don't know how to describe such a masterpiece.
The music falls into the catergory known as "Darkwave" meaning a mixture of Gothic and Industrial influences. The one thing that stands out to me is it is dark but not depressing. The lyrics are hopeful and inspiring.
Tina Root and Susan Wallace were and always will be Switchblade Symphony. After this album Switchblade Symphony turned to more danceable and Trip-Hop style. But make sure to start with this one. You will not be dissapointed!
Switchblade at its best!... March 16, 2006 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
What can I say about Switchblade Symphony? Tina and Susan's debut on Serpentine Gallery is a gorgeous one! They both lend their beautiful vocals on this CD! They're *TALENTED*, *BEAUTIFUL*, *SMART* ladies who should've stayed together and made more *INCREDIBLE*, *LOVELY* music like this!...
im bored i guess January 31, 2006 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've heard probably close to 1000 albums in my life and this is in the top 20 and favorite with a female singer (and I'm not the biggest darkwave/goth fan)....Amazing beats, interesting guitars, eerie keys, and amazing vocals. Just buy it already!

Switchblade Symphony's Serpentine Gallery is widely considered the quintessential darkwave and/or modern-day gothic album.
This is nothing short of a travesty.
While definitely not a fanatic, I've delved quite a bit into the goth/industrial/darkwave genres and have mostly been impressed by the bands' atmospheric darkness, beauty, and compositional skill. I of course love the classics (Bauhaus, the Cure, the Sisters of Mercy, Christian Death, et al), but I also find a few acts today to be worthy, such as London After Midnight and Bella Morte. When I heard THIS album, however, the only thing on my mind was, "When is this going to end?"
This is one of the most excruciatingly BORING albums I have ever had the misfortune of hearing. There is nothing dark, atmospheric, beautiful, emotional, exciting, or shocking about this album, which really sucks, because something with the "goth" label oughta have at least a couple of those aforementioned traits.
The female vocals are HORRIBLE, and have all the vocal presence of American Idol rejects. They are absolutely deadpan and reflect no emotion or passion whatsoever.
The music is uncreative, hackneyed, and just downright dull. There is no drive or danceability, nor anything unique and stimulating created by the tired combination of keyboards, drum machines, and guitars. The songs never feel like they get anywhere, but rather are content to merely float about until they're mercifully ended.
The lyrics are awful, much like the lyrics of most modern-day goth bands. Plenty of cliched references to death, glitter, dolls, and darkness.
Please, people, if you are considering getting this album because you're interested in the goth scene, I urge you to steer clear of this absolutely abysmal, sleep-inducing piece of garbage.
As a bonus, here is a list of 10 true goth albums you should buy instead of this: 1.Bauhaus- In the Flat Field 2.The Cure- Pornography 3.The Cure- Disintegration 4.The Sisters of Mercy- Floodland 5.Siouxsie and the Banshees- Kaleidoscope 6.Christian Death- Only Theatre of Pain 7.ANYTHING by Joy Division or Dead Can Dance 8.Type O Negative- Bloody Kisses 9.London After Midnight- Psycho Magnet 10.Bella Morte- Where Shadows Lie
Great Album April 12, 2005 Gothic music is dark and if you love dark music you will love this album. Sure some people will insist that true goth music is music with circa 80's, cheesy, Sisters of Mercy style vocals. To me that style was copied to ad nauseam and I am more than ready for the day when it is extinct and duplicated by the creatively challenged no more. I'm sure many will disagree, but I'm in this scene because I really don't care what other people think. Anyway, to me this album is as goth as it gets and it's good. Disolve and Clown are the best songs on the album, but the whole album is great and in my opinion represents the best of what Switchblade had to offer. The following albums moved to a much more electronic sound which would have been fine if the lyrics didn't dissolve into silliness regarding witches, ghouls and other spooooooky creatures only of value for those who want a soundtrack for the Halloween trick or treaters that knock upon their door. Regardless, this album is very good and should have it's place in the collection of every goth. I only wish they had made more like this.
