How to describe it? December 6, 2002 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
The best word I can think of to describe this album is: autumnal. I'm not even sure that makes sense. Let me put it this way: this is an album that should be listened to on a autumn night, preferably around Halloween, when there is a slight chill in the air. Songs like 'Scarecrow', 'Burn-Up' and 'Rawhead and Bloodybones' are very appropriate for Halloween, and 'Carousel' has a very "Something Wicked This Way Comes" feel to it.'Burn-Up', with it's out-of-control-locomotive beat, is an excellent song to listen to while driving on the freeway. The only drawback to this album is that "Peek-A-Boo", while a good song, doesn't sound like it belongs on this album after you listen to the other songs. The other songs seem to mesh together (at least for me) with a pseudo-19th Century/Victorian Era feel. "Peek-A-Boo"'s sound is too modern to really fit. Bottom line: Although I don't think "Peek-A-Boo"'s sound really fits in with the rest of the album, this is in every other way a truly great album to own.
Life through the eyes of a 3-year old April 8, 2000 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
I avoided the work of Siouxsie And The Banshees for years simply because of the name of the band: I feared getting some frivolous babe with dyed black hair, deep purple lipstick and nail polish who dressed from head to toe in black, and babbled about the resurgence of Bohemia. So much for that book and cover cliche.Peep Show is accessible, adventurous and compelling. Siouxsie's voice paints many shades from whisper (Scarecrow), through tenderly melodic (The Last Beat Of My Heart), to piercing (The Killing Jar). Often, her lyrics are unintelligible. She may divide each syllable into several music notes (Scarecrow), or sing each syllable with a different note (Rawhead And Bloodybones). The primary instrument is the synthesizer, and the compositions are quit diverse. `Peek-A-Boo' is a club song with tape cutting and looped samples. `Rhapsody' is dark and suspenseful. The most aggressive cut is "Turn To Stone' with an assertive bass line. The lyrical framework is also unique: life through the impressionable eyes of a 3-year old. Every sight and sound is an adventure (Carousel, Rawhead And Bloodybones, Ornaments Of Gold) of emotions. Like every hour in the life of a toddler, Peep Show is an adventurous voyage of discovery.
Unparalleled quality, one of the most "mainstream" albums. August 17, 1999 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
"Peepshow" was my first Siouxsie album. I bought it never having heard the band before. After I listened to it, I decided that I must have every album. This album is masterful, and remains one of my favorite albums of all-time by anyone.
I CAN DIE NOW!!!! September 13, 1999 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
When you listen to this album ..U should put the lights out and use a head phone to feel the beauty of every track...from Scarecrow to Killing Jar and the Last Beat of my Heart....This album is goth on the sentimental side....all i can say about this album is it's so Tragicaly Beautiful....BUY IT!!!!!!!!
More to this album than Peek-a-Boo October 9, 2000 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is one of those albums where the songs that weren't released as singles are much better than the ones that were. Once you get past the annoying "Peek-a-Boo" there are beautifully haunting songs like "Carousel" and "The Last Beat of My Heart." Other great songs are "Scarecrow" and "Turn to Stone." This album was pegged as Siouxsie's break for the top 40, but once you get past all that, it's a nice evolution along the lines of albums like "Hyaena" and "Tinderbox."
