Editorial Reviews:

Virginia exile Jason Mraz grew up listening to Dave Matthews and Agents of Good Roots, local heroes whose frat-friendly influences are much in evidence on his major-label debut. Producer John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer) augments Mraz's SoCal cohorts with Agents' rhythm section, dramatically expanding and polishing songs like "Curbside Prophet" and "You and I Both," which previously appeared in looser, less developed versions on Mraz's self-released live recordings. But fans from the singer-songwriter's coffeehouse years need not despair. Mraz's witty lyrics and easygoing folk-blues stylings (think Jack Johnson on Prozac) are still very much in evidence. He's also in fine voice and, on two standout tracks--"Who Needs Shelter" and "Absolutely Zero"--rivals Neil Finn in his ability to invoke the spirit of Paul McCartney. Waiting for My Rocket to Come showcases an artist who, while still finding his own direction, is clearly off to a great start. --Bill Forman

Album Description
His debut album is packed with witty, wordy, smart, funky & astonishingly catchy pop songs that do right by the best singer-songwriter traditions of Elektra. 2002.

I bought this CD on the strength of "The Remedy," which I'd heard numerous times on the radio and which eventually grew on me. I didn't expect to be completely blown away by the full album, but I am. This CD dabbles in a wide variety of styles--acoustic, 70s, hip-hop, a calypso sound--but it still feels cohesive to me, probably because the lyrics are uniformly terrific throughout. What might not be immediately apparent from "The Remedy" is how beautiful Mraz's voice can be--this is especially evident on the very first track, "You and I Both." A lot of people are comparing this CD to "Room for Squares," which surprises me a bit. Some of these songs are similar to John Mayer's, I guess ("Sleep All Day" comes to mind), but Jason Mraz plays around with different styles a lot more, and has a better voice. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of John Mayer, but this is the superior CD. Give it a few spins, and see how it works its way into your consciousness.

4 out of 5 stars A phenomenal debut, but...   November 17, 2003

Taken on its own merits, this is a great album. It's energetic and exciting, it switches styles without seeming disjointed, and it exhibits the skills of a fantastic new vocalist and songwriter. "The Remedy", overplayed on every Boston station by now, really has a fantastic hook and a strong melodic line. "You and I Both" is a dizzying vocal effort, and other tracks standout as well -- "Sleep All Day", "No Stopping Us", have a great good-time feel and amazing vocals. The lyrics could be stronger, but they are still compelling.

However, there is a caveat - unbelieveable as it may seem, I know that Jason can do better. I've seen two live shows, and while I was happy with this album, i was BLOWN AWAY by his live shows. He has such command and presence, such a powerful and creative voice, and some fantastic musical and instrumental ideas. Unfortunately, the record label packaged all of his songs into the pop/rock mold and out came "Waiting For My Rocket To Come". If Jason gets enough respect and recognition to be able to produce professional recorded music on his own terms, then we will be in for a real treat.

2 out of 5 stars What a shame, what a shame, what a shame....   February 13, 2003

Man, it really bums me out to see such an EXTREMELY talented young musician enter into the grinding gears of shallow product pop. As a San Diego local (& fellow musician -wishing he had half the talent of Jason), the first time I heard Mraz, I was in awe at his sweet combination of originality & innovation. Even as an unpolished beach stone, buried under sand, he shined like bright star in the acoustic world of a man & his guitar. I can't believe he allowed this waaay OVER-produced mess of an album to bare his name. I, by no means, think he should have stayed 'small & local', however there would have been a LOT better way for him to expand his recognition. This is one of those rare cases where every extra sound added to his songs, simply served as a means to smother & fog up his voice & unplugged acoustic guitar. What a Shame. Now, Norah Jones, on the other hand... she did it right --low key, mellow, laid back music for her beautiful & sexy voice.
FYI- I work in a recording studio in La Mesa, and see "product pop" get churned out all the time, and it's just plain demeaning to Mraz, to have it happen to him.

2 stars (only because it IS still J.Mraz)

Good Day,
-Doug

Whatup Music Lovers,

This is the best new album and artist to hit the music scene in a while! Do you recall the upraise of artists like Jack Johnson and John Mayer these past couple years - well, in a matter of months JASON MRAZ is going to be on that list for sure. I personally like Jason's sound more than both John Mayer and Jack Johnson - and I've been a huge fan of both since day one. His music is just PURE BEAUTY, with an UNBELIEVABLE VOICE, a FUNNY and CONFIDENT stage presence, a CHARMING personality and guitar licks that will sooth any soul, Jason is a musician to love. I saw him open for Dave Matthews at the Gorge and, despite how amazing Waiting for My Rocket to Come is, his studio album will never do justice to his live performances. This album is a must have, and an even greater must is to see Jason live when he's anywhere near your hometown. I think in light of Tom Petty's new album, The Last DJ, he would join me in saying, "Finally, a talented musician who loves music a little bit more than money."

5 out of 5 stars The greatest CD ever   October 28, 2002

When I get bored on the internet, I usually just type in random words to see what comes up. A few months ago, I typed in "Mraz" because it is my last name. Up pops up Jason Mraz and flips around my musical world. Soon after that, I bought his "Sold Out (In Stereo)" and fell even more in love with his music. His latest CD, "Waiting For My Rocket To Come" is pretty much the best CD I own. Catchy tunes and clever lyrics are ever-present. Man, can that boy sing! My whole family loves him too. I am insanely happy when I put in Rocket. It just makes you want to sing along and dance to him. It have read that he is comparing to the romantic acoustic sounds of Dave Matthews and John Mayer, which is an awesome compliment. To bring this 'review to a close, if you want a CD that makes your day and makes you hum throughout the day, Waiting For My Rocket To Come is waiting for you. JASON ROCKS! I wonder if I am related to him...?
