Type O Negative Paints a Marvelous Portrait. July 29, 2005 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
You either love this album or you hate it. It's an American band -but they're pretty decent, unlike all the other crap bands america spits out every day. The album was designed to make the listeners experience Autumn and Winter in an audio environment rather than a physical environment - and its done rather succesfully. From the album booklet filled with pictures of leafless trees to the haunting and sometimes serene atmosphere the band paints with their instruments, this is the best audio interpretation of an autumn potrait I have heard (or seen).
The album kicks off with a joke and intro from the band members introducing themselves (a bit unconventional but not a major). The first song of the album is one of the greatest love songs ever written - "Love You to Death," and sets the mood and tempo for the album straight away. At this point I must add that if you have a low tolerance for unorthodox lyrics about women, be warned. The songs concludes with Steele asking "Am I good enough for you?", and wraps up an awesome love song.
Another track worth mentioning is "Red Water", in which Christmas is introduced through none other than jingling bells mixed with Steele's haunting voice and incredibly odd-sounding guitar (I think he cranks the chorus up really high - this can be found throughout the album). A song that you can fall asleep to, but not get bored by (if that makes sense).
"My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" is one of my favorite songs to drive down the highway with. its very catchy and one of the songs cemented into their live set. One of the shorter songs on the album and is guaranteed to give you a laugh or two.
"Wolf Moon" is essential to the collection of melodic metal fans. I can't describe this song in any way, other than telling you if you haven't heard this you are missing out on something great: Easily the best Type O song in existence.
I conclude that this album is outstanding - far better than any other Type O albums. The atmosphere, the shifts from highs to lows, the spine-chilling voice, the synth and other elements are arranged to give a listening experience that is truly unique.
October Rust shines as a musical masterpiece! November 9, 2005 16 out of 20 found this review helpful
Type -O- Negative is a band who's style and composure makes them a step above in the world often labeled as "Goth Metal". don't let the labels fool you. This band was putting out great MUSIC long before the word goth entered the mainstream, and has been long after "nu-metal" fades away...
October Rust is an album where every song is unique, yet all seem to tie together to make it an extremely strong album. Theme's abound as we are taken into another world through the songwriting, guitar work, and dark, synthe sounding (or as some say, haunting) backdrop that is found early and often in thier songs.
This is what seperates October Rust from the rest of the albums often grouped into it's genre. This album has power, strength, and agility among it's peers. The songs are filled with Brooding sounds, while others have crescendo's that lift you up off the edge.
The catchy beat of "Be my Druidess" makes it far one of my favorite songs. Again, this music, if you give it a try, will move you. You don't HEAR it, you FEEL it!
"Love you to death" features a panging piano in the background and is an electrical delight of vocals that chime in unison to give the song a smooth, rich feel.
"Die with me" is a slow song that features an almost acoustic sounding guitar track throughout.
"Burnt Flowers fallen" features a fast paced rocker with synthe sounding effect's that again, move you. I almost wonder if these guys are ahead of thier time..?
"In praise of Bacchus" has some excellent guitar work and clock's in at over 7 minutes. The ability for this band to create extreme crescendo's to literally make different sounds as well as switching the tempo and mood halfway through is always a plus that puts them a step above the rest.
"Cinnamon Girl" ...yeah, they do this cover, and it's truly awesome! Peter Steele's vocals are superb as he always seems to, instead of making a statement like so many metal bands, be reaching out, or asking a question.
These are just some of the great songs on this album. October Rust is a masterpiece as TON is able to slow down the abrupt, in your fact thrash metal the market was saturated with, and give it substance, depth, clarity, and vision.
Oh yes! May 21, 2000 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
I listen to a broad variety of music, so when I heard "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" on the radio one day, I decided to give Type O a shot, and what a wise decision that was! "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" is one of the fastest and hardest tracks on the album, so I was surprised to hear how different some of the others were. Sometimes you think you're listening to a classical arrangement with some gothic guitarplaying going on. Other times it's more like chanting. Lead singer Peter Steele must have one of the deepest voices in existence! Overall, the album has one of the richest atmospheres I've ever heard. Type O Negative seems to appeal to some primal instinct deep within the human soul, some ancient qualities long forgotten. Steele deals with the dark side of things in his lyrics, but deep within I sense a celebration of love (although it certainly is well hidden). Death and despair gets turned into art (or functionless art that is nothing but tolerated vandalism according to the band). No matter what, this is a dark and beautiful masterpiece. Well worth your materialistic means of payment. In other words: get the thing!
Melancholic Masterpiece August 9, 2004 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
Everything comes together perfectly on this album, there really isn't a weak point or song anywhere. This is one of the best gothic albums I've heard, though I wouldn't neccassarily classify Type O as a gothic band. Pete Steele is an amazing singer and gots a real deep voice. He's one of five singers I've ever heard do the extemely deep vocals really well, Johan Edlund of Tiamat, Dust of ...How Like A Winter, Nick Holmes of Paradise Lost and Dan Swano of too many projects to list being the others. The music is dirgy, slow and ambiant, almost like someone threw Black Sabbath, My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost in a blender and Type O is what came out. If your into gothic or interesting music in general you'll probably love this album. I also recommend checking out Tiamat, Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Lacuna Coil, and Anathema in addition to this.
Octobers Rust..... May 1, 2000 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
There is much debate over what the best Type O Negative album is. Most opinions center around the Heavy Gothic Rock of "Bloody Kisses". Some prefer the neanderthal trashing of "Slow Deep & Hard". My personal opinion, however, is that "October Rust" has been Type O Negative's shining moment of glory. October Rust is by far the most eclectic, complex and sensual of Type O's LP's. The album twists and turns through a path of light and darkness unlike any other before (or after) it. The songs fall into either one of four categories: there are the heavy, dark, powerful 'Black Sabbathesque' like songs, such as "Burnt Flowers Fallen", "In Praise of Bacchus", "The Glorious Liberation...", and "Wolf Moon". Then there are the psychadelic, up-beat and funky songs such as "Be My Druidess", "My Girlfriends Girlfriend", and "Cinnamon Girl". Next there are the ambient, spiritual, and beautifully melodic songs such as "Love You To Death", "Green Man", and "Die With Me". Finally there are two hauntingly dark, depressing and morbid epics in the form of "Red Water (Christman Mourning)" and "Haunted". All in all, "October Rust", although slightly more commercial than Type O's other recordings, is their best album. You can hear their hearts, emotions, souls and passions poured into the uplifting music. Experience the enchantment today.
