Once, I had a dream. And this is it.... August 28, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Says the intro to the album. This new work of Nightwish is a whole new set of dreams, fantasies, realities, and themes. The symbolism is also a lot stronger than on Century Child. Its "heavier" in the sense, yet it is still an evident progression. Where Century Child leaves off, Once picks up. This is an overall excellent album, yet if you're just starting to discover the band, I would suggest getting some earlier albums of theirs first to see where theyre coming from (especially Oceanborn or Century Child. Maybe even Over the Hills and Far Away). But here is my review of the songs:
1) Dark Chest of Wonders - a good opening song, it pulls the listener in with its heavy riffs, orchestra, choir, and catchy lyrics. This songs sets the tone and theme for Once.
2) Wish I Had An Angel - the second single lifted from Once. Also scheduled to be in the movie Alone in the Dark (with Tara Reid). This song is reminiscent of "Lagoon" but much heavier with the incorporation of Marco. A bit different than other songs, especially with the techno beat, but it will reach a new audience.
3) Nemo - One of my favorite songs from the album. Not because it was the highly scessful 1st single, but because of its resemblence to "Ever Dream." Its a classic old Nightwish-meets-heavier new Nightwish. This song is the link from Century Child to Once.
4) Planet Hell - I love Marco's voice on this track. It fits in well with Tarja's and the song sets a movie in the listeners mind. The song takes us on the Nightmarishjourney through Hell, and you can hear to fear and hopelessness in Tarja's voice.
5) Creek Mary's Blood - This song also plays a mental movie. With the Native American John Two-Hawks featured on this track, it tells of the epic struggle against Native Americans and the White Settlers. Highly Ironic, with Nightwish being from Finland, it also suggests that Americans should acknowledge their errors, and that even the European ancestors can realize this tragedy.
6) The Siren - Tuomas said the inspiration for this song came from the movie Sinbad, with its middle-eastern sounds. The middle of the song is an instrumental, and it is important not to think of it a "filler" to understand the deeper meaning
7) Dead Gardens - This song to me reminds me of an offshoot of the song "Away" (with the garden theme). To me, this song is the least "epic" sounding one, but it shows Tarja's singing, whispering, and Tuomas's riff-writing abilities. If you have patience, the deeper-meaning is also one that will be evident.
8) Romanticide - I love the name. Perhaps Nightwish's heaviest song to date, it has catchy-anger filled lyrics, angst-ridden whispers and "cry-like" vocals by Tarja, and Marco finds anger again like "Slaying the Dreamer"
9) Ghost Love Score - A triumph of musical skills. It takes us on a journey to discover the bonds of love that cannot be broken. Filled with sorrow, death-wishes, hope, and faith, at 10:00 long, it seems its not long enough. with a chorus sung by a choir and Tarja echoning them, it is chilling. There are instrumental sounds in here that fill haunt yuo long after the song is over.
10) Death Makes An Artist - is the literal translation for this Finnish song. While many people complain that this ballad is to simple, and that it is terrible placement after Ghost Love Score, I disagree. After the climax and rage of Romanticide and the complex hope of Ghost Love Score, this song shows that simple songs can carry the most emotions - no matter what language its in
11) Higher than Hope - Marco's contribution to songwriting. It connects Angels Fall First with the ending of Once. It starts out with an acoustic-based Tarja singing about the sorrows of losing hope "Mother the pain aint hurting me...," and then slams you with a duet with her and Marco the is cringing from the contrast (not in a bad way though). Like "Elvenpath" It incorporates sound clips.
12) White Night Fantasy - A fun song - though not Nightwish at its best. It works out well with Kuolema and Higher then Hope (because of the wind noises in those two songs). It is more of a fantasy piece, and there is so much happiness in Tarja's voice that its perky and uplifting.
This ablum is a great addition for any Nightwish fan, and it will take them far
Good CD September 10, 2004 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
1. Dark Chest Of Wonders: A good heavy start this also shows how good Emppu is as a guiter player. 10/10 2. Wish I Had An Angel: Very different for Nightwish. 10/10 3. Nemo: Ok this was there single it is good but not great 5/10 4. Planet Hell: This does not open with Nightwish first. Which is a change but when you hear it it will blow you away. 9'10 5. Creek Mary's Blood: A very good song the way it is put together sounds like it is from a movie. 10/10 6. Siren: There bass player sings here more then Tarja. Again very different for this band. 10/10
7. Dead Gardens: This is the start of two heavy songs. If you don't like songs where the guiter and drums are in your face then pass over this one. 10/10 8. Romanticide: Again like the last song if you don't like in your face guiter playing and drumers then pass over it. 10/10 9. Ghost Love Score: Again like song number 5 this sounds like it can be in a movie. 10/10 10. Kuolema Tekee Taitcilijan: Very good song. The rest of Nightwish is not here it is just Tarja. 9/10 11. Higher Than Hope: A great end to the album 10/10 12. White Night Fantasy: Well this is not on the CD I got it is on one of the three singles. This is not very Nightwish. It is different and not every one will like it. 6/10
Great and new.. September 21, 2004 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This album is Nightwish's latest and i have mixed feelings about it..
The album starts off with Dark Chest of Wonders which is a very good song then comes I wish i had an angel which is good but has a touch of techno i don't like. After that comes the best song in this album (and one of the best ever) NEMO! Beauty in all its terms. Planet hell comes afterward which is a nice song with a very operatic start. Then Creek Mary's Blood which is kinda like a script for a movie. Siren then comes which is very oriental, i like it. Dead gardens is also good. Romanticide is weird, its all scrambled, i dont like it that much. Ghost love score is great but its 10 min long. Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan is nice but its in finnish. Higher than hope is a beautiful ending to this album.
My favourites off this album, Dark Chest Of Wonders, Nemo, Planet Hell, Siren, Dead Gardens and Higher Than Hope.
This is a good album, on par with century child tho a bit better. Take note that this album gives a very bad first impression and that you have to listen to it two to three times to apreciate it fully.
Very good use of any Orchestra October 11, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Now people know why the Orchestra used here won any Ocser for best Score in a movie. :)
Ok know on to the CD it's self.
1. Dark Chest of Wonders: Nightwish always starts off with a heavy song. That has never changed. I found this to be a very good song. I love how the guiter is used right from the get go. I also like how choir is used. 10/10
2. Wish I Had An Angel: This is very different for Nightwish. I don't really know what you would call. It's metal but I don't really know what kind of metal. This is also the first of four songs that Marco sings in. 10/10
3. Nemo: This was there first single. It's a good song and makes good use of the orchestra. I like it but it's not there best song. It's not as heavy, but it's also not that slow. 8/10
4. Planet Hell: This song starts not with guitersor drums or any other member of Nightwish. It starts with the choir and the orchestra. Marco starts singing here and then Tarja starts in. Great heavy song. Far more heavy then Wish I Had An Angel. 10/10
5. Creek Mary's Blood: I like this song. Nightwish got John Two-Hawks to preform with them for this one. This is also the first song where the orchestra really seem like they were in the same place at the same time. 10/10
6. The Siren: Tarja singings a few lines here. The rest is Marco singing and the band and the orchestra singing. 10/10
7. Dead Gardens: The first of two heavy songs in a row. It is very good. The last minute has some very heavy riffs. It's a great song. 10/10
8. Romanticide: Best heavy song that Nightwish has every done. Marco has a really great part at the end of the song. This is for metal fans. If you don't like heavy songs like this then pass over it. 10/10
9. Ghost Love Score: This song uses Nightwish, the orchestra, and the choir. It is very long and would fit great into a movie. 10/10
10. Kuolema Tekee Taiteitijan: This is song in finnish. So it's hard to know what they are saying. The orchestra is just used here. 7/10
11. Higher Than Hope: This song is for a fan of theres that they knew very well. He dead so this song is for him. It is a great song. 10/10
12. White Night Fantasy: This song is odd. It is Nightwish playing. But it does not sound like a Nightwish song. I just have to hear it for your self. 7/10
Once rocks! September 28, 2004 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought Nightwish's Once cd from their site when it came out a couple months ago, and I still love it. Nightwish really brings alive their songs. There is just so much energy on this cd. My personal favourites off this cd will have to be, 'Wish I Had An Angel', 'Ghost Love Score', 'Nemo', 'Creek Mary's Blood', and 'Planet Hell'... Actually I love the whole cd. And all I have to say to those who say that Nightwish isn't metal anymore, Nightwish can be whatever they wanna be. They are Nightwish and always will be Nightwish. After listening to this cd over and over again I can tell that Nightwish really put alot of hard work on this cd. And if people don't like the new Nightwish cd, oh well, it's their loss. Because Nightwish isn't really losing any fans, they are gaining fans. So yeah, this cd pretty much owns.
