Good For Beginners! July 21, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This amazing 3 disk set offers a collection of songs spanning the entire career of MDB including several songs that are rather hard to find! Anti-Diluvian Chronicles is perfect for anyone new to the band for this reason. Current fans may be somewhat dissapointed as the set doesn't offer much in terms of new material or 'bonus' features. The live tracks are great (production value is top notch!) but the remixs of several songs (Raven and the Rose) are greatly inferior to the original tracks, hence my four star rating. Other than this minor flaw Anti-Diluvian Chronicles is a great place for potential MDB fans to start off, or for long-time listeners to enjoy their favorite songs anew, remastered and under the same roof! Bottom line, buy this set! Even if you own every other MDB CD you will still not regret owning this boxset!
For every MDB fan August 7, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I had originally bought this through amazon UK before it was available here. But anyways. I have been a major fan of this band forever. I do agree it'd be a great start out for any newbie to doom metal in general. This was the band that switched me from pop to doom metal a little over 5 years ago so if you are trying to convert someone then this would be a great start. This box set has a lot of songs from various CD's mixed into one big set so it's good for use in the car. It also has some new mixes which are cool. I'd recommend it to any collector's as well. But if you own all the CD's and don't have the 30$ I'd just wait it out.
Outstanding Anthology May 31, 2007 No one plays this kind of soul-crushingly bleak gothic/death/doom metal quite like My Dying Bride. The UK-based band buries the listener in a tomb of sonic darkness so complete that light can neither enter nor escape. My Dying Bride's only flaw is that with the exception of the more experimental 34.788%...Complete, most of their albums tend to follow the same formula. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but if you put the band's entire discography in a CD changer set on random (or shuffle them on your iPod), you'd be hard pressed to tell which album each song comes from. I like My Dying Bride's music, but owning all of their albums seems like overkill. This is where The Anti-Diluvian Chronicles box set comes in.
This 3-CD box set provides a great overview of the band's catalog from their early EPs to their later studio albums, with a few remixes and live tracks thrown in for good measure. The only thing this collection is missing is some video content. A DVD with some of their videos/live performances would have made this a more complete anthology. The box itself is pretty cool, though the discs are housed in cardboard sleeves, which is a pet peeve of mine. Digipacks or slimline jewel cases would have looked a lot nicer, and would do a better job protecting the CDs.
Packaging complaints aside, the Anti-Diluvian Chronicles is exactly what I was looking for. The relatively high price tag makes it a bit too expensive for newcomers looking to see what My Dying Bride is all about, but it is ideal for casual fans like me.
