oh please (in reference to the reviewer from Brazil) January 28, 2000 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
Old punks? Bauhaus essentially single-handedly started the whole goth music scene. They are the original, quintessential goth band. I have been listening to them since 1981 or so, and to me they're still the best goth band ever. Most of the newer bands are just trying to emulate their style. Yeah, maybe this recording isn't the best, but it's a LIVE ALBUM! They are always going to sound rougher than the studio albums. The end result: if you LIKE Bauhaus and you LIKE live albums, then get this one.
This really took me back to the DC in 1998 November 17, 1999 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I had the opportunity to see Bauhaus' Resurrection tour when they stopped in DC. The show was spellbinding, hauntingly beautiful, a real spiritual event. This recording really captures their live essence. Standout points are their cover of Dead Can Dance's 'Severance' (I saw in my mind Peter on a stage riser crooning above with his arm outstretched to the ceiling as he did in DC). 'In Fear of Fear' is blistering and the fuzzed intro to 'Double Dare' on the live recording filled me with the same chill I felt at the beginning of the show I saw. The fact that they included a version of 'Spirit' on this is all the more relishing. I believe they only played that song to the real enthusiastic crowds. It is quite a treat to have it here. Another perk to this release is a studio version of 'Severance', very similar to their live take on the song, but their first studio release of new material since they broke. Need I say that this is a must for any fan of Bauhaus? It is sure to invoke the same feel their live performance induces.
Great album November 16, 1999 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
A well recorded live album, but I still kinda like the raw, noisy sound of Press the Eject and Give me the Tape. I was at the show, and found the live sound better than reproduced on the discs. Some of their best songs performed well - a must for the Bauhaus fan. Go ahead - it's worth the money.
Oh, so now they call themselves gothic? November 26, 1999 7 out of 37 found this review helpful
As a long time Bauhaus fan, I must say this album is unforgivenly disapointing. The sound is no good and I expected they would sophisticate their songs after 16 years of learning how to play. Bauhaus was basicaly a punk band, now they assume their popularity among the gothic audience and call themselves gothic. For me, they sound just like old punks, and when you're punk you can do everything but growing old. If you wanna hear them live, buy "Press The Eject" or the semi oficial "Rest in Peace". "Gotham" is just a bunch of oldmen covering Bauhaus.
Godfathers of Goth Rock December 14, 2000 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
Okay children...this is a killer album. If I had to own only one Bauhaus recording, it would be this one. Bauhaus are the godfathers of goth ROCK--they initiated a genre. My Dying Bride are METAL, not rock--they are gothic doom metal, and the godfathers of gothic doom are Black Sabbath. Anathema, Paradise Lost, and My Dying Bride are all goth-METAL. ALSO "gothic" is a theme, not a form of music. Movies (styled in the film noir tradition)like Bladerunner, Hellraiser, and the Crow are "gothic." Film noir means "dark film" which alludes to dark cinematic overtones. Many bands are styled goth--The Cure, black metal like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, Katatonia, all considered "goth" or goth influenced. Architecture (as in old cathedrals) are styled "gothic." Stop fighting kiddies. You don't even have valid arguments.
