Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
What makes a band truly remarkable? Insightful lyrics? Memorable melodies? Blow-your mind live performances? The truth is that it takes all of those things along with a boundless enthusiasm, an infectious energy and a supreme devotion to the fans. With this rare combination, a band may ascend past "good," - and reach sublime. Drawing on the hardships and joys of their own lives and a musical history ranging from old world Celtic to modern day punk rock, the seven members of Flogging Molly do just that, and they do it with a charm and an ease that makes them one of the most revered bands performing today. Flogging Molly isn't a mere band, they're a seven member nuclear family. They are as devoted to one another as they are to the music they create. It's no wonder their extended family - the legion of loyal Flogging Molly fans - keeps growing every day.

3 out of 5 stars Average album   April 17, 2008

Ok, first off, I have been listening to FM for about 6 years now. I was intruduced to them through a friend, who played me the fistrt 10 seconds of Drunken Lullibies and i was hooked. Now, its been a good couple of years since FM has realesed an album, so I was excited to hear that they finally realesed a new one. Well kiddies, unfortunatly its not the album I was expecting. Lets go with the pros first

Pros:
*This is the first album from FM that does'nt sound like it was recorded in a tin can. (though i almost consider that a con)
*This is the tightest the band has been (instrumentally)
*Some songs i like the up-beat feel to a little more than the older albums

Cons:
*The band has unfortuantly opted for a more mainstream rock lyrics rather than the "drinking songs" of old, though some songs still retain the originality.
* 42 minutes of music? C'mon, if I am gonna pay 15 bucks i would like something more filling.
*It took WAY too long for the band to come up with this little of music, I still love them to death but I'd like a little more bang for my buck.

Over all, this is not a horrible album, but its not the bands best either. Hopefully the next album will return more towards the point of origen. If you are a fan, then you owe it to yourself to pick it up, if you are not but are intersted in the band, then pick up Drunken Lullibies or Swagger.

5 out of 5 stars A change that had to be made   March 7, 2008

First things first: If you're looking for the rebel-rousing, drinking song filled release that Flogging Molly has become famous for, this may not be the album for you. With each album that FM has released, they've began to inch away from the lyrical content of their earlier works, and closer to a more personal, mature sound. While their previous albums were filled with songs of Irish heritage, and lyics inspired by lead singer Dave King missing his homeland, this album tackles more personal issues. While not as fast-paced and hard-edged as their previous work, the songwriting on all accounts has reached a new, more mature level here. And all in all, I believe that to be for the best. With Float, Flogging Molly show that they're not just a one-trick pony. Instead of repeating what they've done in the past, they take a step forward, and I for one applaud them for it.

So, in review: If you're looking for the novelty of their previous works, in terms of drinking songs and good time jams, this album may not be the one for you. But, if you're a fan on FM who wishes to see them take a step in a new direction, while still maintaining their signature sound, I HIGHLY recomend this album.

2 out of 5 stars Float an appropriate title.   March 8, 2008

Let me start off by saying I'm a huge Flogging Molly fan. I have snapped up every scrap of music they have released. With every release I have been able to find no less than three or four songs that grab my attention right away. They aren't all the same type of songs it varies from the likes of Salty Dog, Sentimental Johnny or The Wrong Company. I have listened to Float five times now and nothing stands out.

This album is a let down. Especially after the Within a Mile of Home disc. Not to take anything from Whiskey on Sunday "collection". I noticed that Ted Hutt did not produce this album although he didn't produce their first album either. Hopefully they can get him back on the next album.

As a whole the songs sound like a bunch of songs that were cut from previous albums and there isn't a single pirate song in the whole bunch. This album is very ho-hum. I went through their three previous studio albums and I have to say their weakest offerings on those albums are better than the best on Float.

If you are a first time listener of Flogging Molly this is major deviation from their normal quality.

No new waters are explored here, the albums just sits there Floating dead in the water.

2 out of 5 stars This Is It?!   March 6, 2008

First off I would like to state that I love Flogging Molly and they are by far my favorite band. With that out of the way, here is my review:

This album is terrible. First off three of the songs (Requiem, Float, and Between a Man & a Woman) were previously released as live tracks. The first two on an iTunes EP last year and Between a Man & a Woman on Alive Behind The Green Door 11 years ago! And the latter song is the best offering on the entire album. Granted Float is decent as well, but besides this and Between, the other songs are complete voids. There is no emotion on any of the songs and all the music sounds quite too similar to each other on this album. These two things are the cornerstones of why their previous albums rock so much. Sorry to say that this album fails and I'd like to say that they seriously sold out just to make another album. They receive two stars because I still hold them as my favorite band until they screw up the next album (I certainly hope not). Otherwise it would be worthy of only one star.

5 out of 5 stars My first Flogging Molly CD will not be my last   May 16, 2008

I heard "Requiem for a Dying Song" at our local bookstore and snatched up this CD. I'm glad I did. I very much enjoy Celtic Rock and Punk and "Float" is an excellent addition to my collection.

What I really like is the tight musicianship. The band really plays well together. Their vocals are tight and strong. Most of the message is upbeat--so it's a fun CD to listen to. The sound quality is good, too.

If you enjoy Celtic Punk like the Dropkick Murphys, this is another group you will probably enjoy very much. I'm looking forward to getting "Drunken Lullabies" next.
