Mostly a collection of remixed tracks from Portrait of an American Family and samples swiped from talk-radio dialogue, Smells Like Children is how Marilyn Manson passed the time prior to beginning work on Antichrist Superstar. Of note among the remixes is Tony Wiggins's acoustic country "White Trash" version of "Cake and Sodomy." This is really a keeper, though, for Manson's clever choice of covers, including an authentically creepy interpretation of Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" and the shot-in-the-arm he gives to Patti Smith's "outside of society" anthem, "Rock 'N' Roll Nigger." (Attention trivia buffs: Manson's unrestrained reworking of Howling Wolf's "I Put a Spell on You" was later included on the soundtrack to David Lynch's Lost Highway.) --Gail Worley

4 out of 5 stars Great collection   September 30, 2002

Between Marilyn Manson's brilliant debut "Portrait of an American Family" and his breakthrough album "Antichrist Superstar", this collection of mostly remixes was released to bide time over for "Antichrist" to be recorded. Standout tracks include Tony Wiggins (you can catch him on Pantera's 3: Watch It Go home video and read extensively about him in Manson's autobiography) performing a "White Trash" version of "Cake & Sodomy" which sounds country-ish but is darkly humerous. "Organ Grinder" is reworked into "Kiddie Grinder" and is one of the best remixes I have ever heard. "F*** Frankie" is hilarious but only to those who know the story behind it, and we get brilliant covers of "I Put a Spell On You" (which was also featured on the Lost Highway soundtrack), "Rock 'N Roll Nigger", and what was a big hit, the very chilling cover of "Sweet Dreams". All in all, "Smells Like Children" is a great collection of remixes and covers that any Manson fan should have if they don't have it already.

4 out of 5 stars C'mon People, It's Marilyn Manson!   January 16, 2004

A album ONLY for the Manson fan. It's worth the whole album for tracks 6, 9, and 15. Heres my opinion

The Hands Of Small Children - A child being tortured by some sort of evil sadistic mutant, how fun... 2/5

Diary Of A Dope Fiend - A very slow and boring remix of
"Dope Hat", ehh... It's okay. 3.75/5

S****y Chicken Gang Bang - An organ solo by M.W. Gacy, it's actully pretty good, makes good haunted house music. 4/5

Kiddie Grinder - A remix of "Organ Grinder" that will make your ears bleed, 0.5/5 (Yeah, it's that bad)

Sympathy For The Parents - A distorted interview with Manson, it's not too bad, but worth skipping. 2.5/5

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These) - The entire reason I bought the album! This puts thode wussy Eurythmics pop-version to shame! 6/5

Everlasting C***sucker - A remix of "Cake And Sodomy", and a decent one at that... 4/5

F*** Frankie - Disturbing, very disturbing, 1:48 mins. of orgasm sounds. 3/5

I Put A Spell On You - YEAH!!! Another actual song! And you'll be playing this track about 16 1/2 times before the next track! 5/5

May Cause Discoloration Of The Urine Or Feces - A 4-5 minute phone conversation about a very stupid person discussing medication with a pharmacist, very boring 2.75/5

Scabs, Guns, And Peanut Butter - A decent minute long instermental, i'll tell ya', A chipmunk and a banjo can be a very dangerous combonation! 4/5

Dance Of The Dope Hats - Another remix Of "The Dope Hat", still dosen't top the original. 4/5

White Trash - A funny remix of "Cake And Sodomy" with a country feel, Tony F. Wiggins would suffice as a country singer. 5/5

Dancing With The One Legged - Skip it, it's not funny... 0/5

Rock 'N' Roll Nigger - Rawk on!!! This is the best track on the album!!! You'll be jamin' for hours! 6/5

As for the hidden track... It's a couple seconds of random noises, followed by a long, long silence. We'd be better off without it... [I refuse to rate it].

Anyway... If your a Manson fan, This is for you. If your a beginer, Start with Portrait Of An American Family. Overall I'd give this album a C+, Buy It For "Sweet Dreams", "I Put A Spell On You", and "Rock 'N' Roll Nigger".

I'll be honest with you when i got this album i thought it would all be like "The Beautiful People" cause that was the only manson song i had ever heard. When i was at the store i was walking around and i saw the manson CD's and i started looking at them. I saw Holywood, Mechanical Animals, and Antichrist Superstar, and Portrait of and American Family too. My mom saw the covers of them and said i couldn't get MA, Holywood or AcS. So i was left with two choices Smells Like Children and Portrait of and American Family. I ended up getting SLC and i believe i ended up making the wrong choice for the kind of music i was looking for. I'm not saying its a bad CD just not a good one to start off your Marilyn Manson listening to. It could turn u off of Manson probably easier than it could turn u on to him. I was one of the lucky ones and i liked the CD and listened to it quite often. Now I currently own This CD, The Golden Age of Grotesque, Mechanical Animals, and I am going to be getting The Last Tour On Earth within the next week. So as u see I have become addicted to Brian Warner. I am a Mansonoholic u could say.

The Best Tracks on the Album are:
5: Dance of the Dope Hats (Remix)
4: Kiddie Grinder (Remix)
3: I Put a Spell on You
2: Sweet Dreams (are made of this)
1: Rock'n'Roll N!99er

as a last note don't get this CD just because u like one of his songs because, sad as it is, the people who i have played this CD for, the majority of them no longer like Marilyn Manson A.K.A. Brian Warner near as much as they did before.

3 out of 5 stars Suitable for an EP, but not for casual fans   December 17, 2000

I have talked to a number of people whose first and only exposure to the band Marilyn Manson was this CD. Unfortunately, they came to the conclusion that the band has no talent based on the merits of perhaps their worst recording. If you want to treat this album as full length studio album, prepare to be disappointed. Manson, however, has maintained that this album is an EP album or remixes primarily, so I shall treat it that way.

If you are a first time Manson buyer or a casual fan, I'd shy away from this recording and opt for "Antichrist Superstar," "Mechanical Animals," or "Holy Wood." Essentially, the album contains five remixes of songs from their debut album "Portrait of an American Family," three cover songs (Sweet Dreams, Rock 'N' Roll Nigger, I Put a Spell on You), and a number of short musical anomalies and skits. This is all well and good, however some of the short musical pieces and skits serve as nothing more than a distraction from the recording. In a number of places, I felt the momentum of the record would have been better maintained if some of the oddball tracks had not been included. The oddball tracks are humorous for a few listenings, but in my mind, they don't hold up to repeated scrutiny.

If there's one thing that makes this album worth buying, it's the cover of the song Sweet Dreams. This album (particularly that song) helped launch Marilyn Manson into the spotlight. I find it ironic that the band's weakest recording served as their launching ground into stardom. Ever present is that demented juvenile feel that was prevalent on the debut album (hence the title of this album). The remixes are surprisingly good, not reconstructed as well as Nine Inch Nails remixes, but they are good nonetheless (especially the Dope Hat remixes). The remaining cover songs are also worth your while, but in the long run, this fifteen track album will boil down to a matter of seven or eight tracks of actual substance.

Only get this if you are a serious fan and enjoy the Portrait era. (I do) Do not get this if you are just looking for a CD that has Sweet Dreams on it. While it may appear to have 16 songs on it, in reality it is only 7. All the other songs are just little skits that were thrown on with it. Some are good and entertaining (F*** Frankie), others are just worthless (The untitled Track). The actual songs are as follows.

2. Diary of a Dope Fiend (remix) 7/10 A weird/slow remix of Dope Hat, Manson sings very differently, it's entirely reworked.
4. Kiddie Grinder (Remix) 8/10 A very Fun Remix of Organ grinder
6. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) 10/10 Classic outdoes the original. Put Manson on the Spot.
7. Everlasting C***Sucker (Remix) 5/10 I could care less about this remix of Cake and Sodomy.
9. I put a Spell on You 10/10 Awesome Cover; I wish they played this Live more often.
Original by Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
12. Dance of the Dope Hats 7/10(Remix) Faster Remix that come across as unnecessary.
15. Rock N' Roll Nigger 9/10 Another awesome Cover, but the production seems to have faded here or something. Original by Patti Smith.

So there you have it, that's Smells like Children. There are a few things missing though. I feel they should have added the Mother Inferior Got her Gunn (remix) 9/10 which was wasted on the Get you Gunn single. Also a few of the skits were kind of Inside jokes (F*** Frankie) and to understand them I recommend to read Marilyn Manson's autobiography the Long hard Road Out of Hell. Also I would like to point out that, as another reviewer said, that it would be wise to try and get this for less then $10. I got this as a birthday present (*chuckles*) and I can easily see why some people are put off Manson because of this. I got almost all his other stuff before this, so I enjoy it as it is an EP, but it is lacking. I hope this helped.
