If you don't like it at first, give it another try May 11, 2004 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Although the Crxshadows are among my favourite bands, I have never enjoyed any releases of theirs upon the first hearing. It's always taken two listenings to get to the eventual state of adoration. I think it's quite possible that this is true for other fans or even first-time listeners of the band- If you're not completely enamoured of Frozen Embers by the third listening, you most likely will feel the same about the other albums. This was my first of their CDs, an esteemed member of my CD rack, and a learning experience. You can't always judge a CD by hearing it once.
Can't wait for Ethernaut August 22, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
My friend gave me this cd, because she knew i was a fan of the Cruxshadows...have been since i got the TEARS cd... I put this cd in my player and the most beautiful song played. WINTERBORN, it might be their best song yet. Then DANCE FLOOR METAPHOR came on and i couldn't resist,I had to get up and dance. FROZEN EMBERS also has great remixes of Return, Seraphs, and Go Away. Which are three of my favorite songs from WISHFIRE. I would definitely recommend getting this cd as an introduction to the Cruxshadows. Other Favorite songs of mine are MONUMENT off of MYSTERY OF A WHISPER; WITHIN from the TEARS cd; and SPECTATORS from WISHFIRE. I absolutely love when Rogue does spoken word stuff...mostly Edgar Allen Poe poems. I just love his voice. Rachel's violin solos are so beautiful. I love when people incorporate violins into their music. Especially when it's Goth-y Dance music. I can't wait for them to come to Detroit. I can't wait to see them live.
Simply Amazing August 21, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have to admit that I am biased, simply because I love the Cruxshadows and their music. Therefore I knew that I would love this CD before I even listened to it.Anyhow, Frozen Embers has me positively salivating at the thought of their upcoming album, especially since I had a chance to listen to some of the tracks that will be on it already. And while one might argue about the need for five different versions of Coming Home on one CD, each remix is different in its way, and it is hard to pick a favourite. Same with the three different versions of Winterborn, which is among my top ten Cruxshadows songs ever (Among the others are Deception, Cruelty, Marilyn, Eurydice, Bloodline, Ballrooms on Mars and several new songs I heard at their shows) Winterborn, as I alluded to, is simply amazing, a beautiful and inspiring piece, that blends in wonderfully with the general theme of their current concerts, involving the fall of Troy. If the rest of the new album is as great, we have a lot to look forward to. The other songs are great as well, and finally we have a CD with Deception on it, a song that was only to be found on the Succubus Club sampler. Dancefloor Tragedy is another great song, though not as brilliant as some of their other work. Frozen Embers is not for everybody. If you desperately want new Cruxshadows songs, wait for the next album. If you are new to the band, get Wishfire or Mystery of the Whisper first. If, however, you are somebody like me, who needs every album by his favourite band, and every remix of every track, then get this EP. It is on constant rotation in my player (along with the Echoes and Artifacts EP) and I see no reason to take it out yet...
Beauty in Darkness November 27, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Like many others, I purchased this CD "single" while anxiously awaiting "Ethernaut". It certainly did the trick in tiding me over. "Winter Born(This Sacrifice)" is one of the most lyrically beautiful songs I have heard in quite some time. The song's poetic and emotional depth was truly moving to me. The first time I heard it I kept playing it over and over, basking in the fact that it is just a really GREAT song in melody & tone. The remixes of the "Wishfire" tracks are welcomed and adored and the acoustic version of "Winter Born" is addicting. My only disappointment is that this version is quite abridged. Quite a shame considering how beautiful the song is in its entirety. The Cruxshadows are growing musically and I think their fan base is growing because of it. Defintely buy this and "Ethernaut". Peace.

Few bands can create successful re-mix EPs that you want to listen to over and over, but CXS have done it.Even if you dont like remixes but it for the glorious acoustic version of "Winterborn".
