Those who have enjoyed this program on PBS need only be told that it is available on home video. Andre Rieu is a master of light classical music, and here he is at his best. The program was taped live, outdoors in the Piazza de la Republica in the Italian cty of Cortona. Rieu addresses the audience in fluent but sometimes charmingly awkward Italian, with English subtitles. From the opening moments he has the vast crowd in the palm of his hand. They whistle for him in "Chanson d'amour," clap in unison for the "Toreador Song" from Carmen, the "Radetzky" march, and the galloping finales of the William Tell and Light Cavalry overtures, and sing along in "La donna e mobile," the drinking song from La traviata, and, most movingly, the Italian national anthem and "Va pensiero," which is almost a national anthem.

The music is basic classical top-40, with an emphasis on opera and a lot of Italian music, including "The Carnival of Venice" and the Grand March from Aida. The performances are full of energy and technically skilled. Rieu conducts, plays his violin, and generously shares the spotlight, notably with soprano Carmen Monarca, mezzo-soprano Carla Malfioletti, and several singing and dancing young ladies who might have stepped out of a Botticelli painting. Visuals include, besides the concert, a charming Tuscan landscape and a ride in a Venetian gondola. --Joe McLellan

5 out of 5 stars Tuscany comes to your house   September 24, 2004

Andre once again gives us a thrill. The Romance of Tuscany, the beauty of the Johann Strauss Orchestra & the Charm of Andre. Filmed in Cortona, the beauty of the outdoor atmosphere matching the charm of Andre & the JSO. Speaking in Italian, Andre easily connects with his fans. Framed in the colors of Cortona, the city sets the background for a Romantic Evening. 'Romance Anonyme & I Love You' are soft and spirited at the same time. 'Barcarolle' beautiful. Who can resist dancing with the JSO as they play a waltz? Carmen is ever stunning as she sings O Mio Babbino Caro, bringing some of us to tears. You clap, You sing, You dance, You fall in Love. This is Andre at his best. Turn the lights down low, pour your favorite glass of vino and enjoy. This is a DVD to own.
*Andre just completed another Cortona concert, so let's hope for a follow up CD & DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Magical   September 22, 2004

It seems like every Andre Rieu special has something unique to offer. Each one has a certain style and flavor, based largely on the audience he is performing in front of. The songs Andre and his orchestra perform in this concert are well tailored to the Italian audience. Overall, the music is beautful and just plain magical. Classical music doesn't get any better than this. It's another home run performance for Andre and his orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars An Italian Way of Evening   May 3, 2006

We have 16:9 screen format with DD5.1 and DD2.0 sound options. He speaks in Italian (with English or French subtitles) and feature runs for 87 minutes. This concert took place in Cortona in Italy (in Tuscany region -NW of Italy, which is famous for its vineyards, olive gardens and Pisa Tower). Concert is in two parts; first part takes 43 mins and second 44 mins. There are also bonus materials in the DVD with the song Largo, Behind the Scenes and Making Of. But all of them run only 3-4 minutes. With this concert Andre Rieu takes us to a summer evening atmosphere of a Tuscan City. Song selections are based on Italian songs and Italian composers. Some tracks have video-clips by Rieu and his soloists, in order to take us back those medieval times in Italy. At the end of the concert, Rieu plays his own piece called "I Love You". Apart from other DVDs by him, there are only 2 tracks from Viennese composers and therefore we cannot name this concert as Viennese style or A Waltzing Evening. But of course, it is a very nice example of Andre Rieu's concert to make us feel Italian way of music.

For those of you who are familiar with Andre Rieu's DVDs/CDs; it is needless to say how his music is beautiful and joyful. You never and ever keep yourself in your chair. If you like waltzes or classical pieces or a beginner listener in that area; he is the one who can give you the magic of classical music. And according to me, everyone should invite classical music to his home and introduce it to his/her kids from early ages. And to begin with, Andre Rieu is the great choice...

5 out of 5 stars Our first Andre Rieu Experience   May 26, 2005

One night while channel surfing we hit the PBS special of Andre Rieu in Tuscany. We were captivated and surfed no more. Having no idea who Andre Rieu was it was not his name that caught our attention but the beautiful setting and the music. It was absolutely spell-binding. We subscribe to netflix and looked to see if it was available through that and it was so we ordered it. We watched it about six times before returning it and then we looked for it through Amazon and ordered it along with the Dublin one. We have also watched, through Netflix, the 100 years of Strauss and the one from Berlin. Although they are all good, by far we love the Tuscany concert the best. My favorite is the Puccini piece with Carmen Monarcha singing. What an absolute angel. My sentiment is with the old man they show a couple of times during that song who ends up with tears coming down his cheeks. It really is a moving rendition. One of the best features of the concert, however, is the fantastic audience response to most of the songs. All the concerts we have seen have good audience participation but this seems like the best. It must be an Italy thing. Anyway, needless to say, my wife and I have become HUGE Andre Rieu and Johann Strauss orchestra fans and if some day we were able to attend one of his concerts I know it would be a highlight of our lives!!!
