Simply the Best! February 28, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This recording of the motets is so exciting and exhilerating that it is such a shame that it is now out of print. If you can get your hands on it, grab it! You won't be disappointed. It combines the "best of both worlds," so to speak when it comes to the subject of authentic performance practices. It had been common practice in past years to perform Bach's motets in the accapella tradition rather that with instrumentation, as is done here. But unlike so many "period" performances these performances do not lack excitment or color. The famous Westminster College Choir sings with a lovely full bodied sound and lots of energy. In my opinion this is the best recording of the motets.

This recording was originally made in the late 1970's by the Westminster Choir (40 voices) under the direction of Wilhelm Ehmann and was one of, if not, the last recordings this grandfather of authentic performance. His earlier recordings were with the Westphalian Cantorei in his native Germany and was in the US to reord and tour with the Westminster Choir. This recording makes wonderful use of a variety of instrumentation, double choir and soloist in a style available to Bach but seemingly beyond the imagination of the current powdered wig original performance practice set. The choir is, in short, stunning. Its sound has tremendous warmth which is in sharp contrast to the emasculated sounds of today's genre of baroque choral ensembles. The diction is clear without being a distraction and the meaning of the text is conveyed without overt romanticism or sentimentality. All of the performances are top notch, but Komm, Jesu, Komm and the rarely heard Furchte dich nicht are particularly noteworthy. As a side note, if the original record jacket with picture is correct, this could be the first recording of now famous Mezzo Soprano Jennifer Larmore who is a 1980 graduate of Westminster Choir College.

i have heard quite a few interpretations of the motets, and this one is my favorite. it is a a slightly different interpretation from the norm in that the motets are sung by a relatively large choir and some of the pieces at a slightly slower tempo. this only results in a magical, warm sound with a good reverb for effect. the sound is well balanced, with the orchestra providing a good foundation, but never overpowering the choir. it is a very powerful total sound that will give you chills. you better grab it if it is available as this cd is out of print and now very rare.
