Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
International pressing of the 2008 solo album from the former Housemartins/Beautiful South vocalist and songwriter. Following the split of the Beautiful South in 2007, Heaton set about recruiting a new band and writing a set of outstanding Pop tunes; The Cross Eyed Rambler is an album full of wry observations, and pithy, funny, rabble rousing, declactions about the state of the country, and is the next step in the career of Paul Heaton and will see him established as one of the great British songwriters. 12 tracks includes the single 'Mermaids And Slaves'. Universal.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful South Fans Should Jump On Board With The Cross Eyed Rambler   July 22, 2008
I heard clips of the new Paul Heaton material through myspace and admittingly, the raw demos didn't peak my interest much. Hearing the final product peaks my interest every day I get in the car and pop this cd in. Absolutely brilliant - has greatly surpassed my expectations. For the record as a diehard Beautiful South fan, I very much adored Quench and Gaze and Headnodders from their 98-04 phase. I thought Painting it Red was a yawner. I did enjoy Superbi but haven't played it as much as the others. It's good music but kind of lacking the edge found on earlier material.

The Cross Eyed Rambler is a nice blend of everything but with a fresh twist. It starts of with an erie song that sounds like it's from the 20's.

I Do is a good song, I'd say 3/5 stars - it's a bit heavier than we're used to hearing.

Mermaids and Slaves - now we're talkin'. I can't imagine someone hearing this song and not liking it, even after a few listens. You can't sit still with this song, toe tapping and fun to sing to.

Deskchair Collapes is my second favorite on the disc, excellent melody with an infectious hook. Could be the sister song to The Table, but a bit more upbeat.

Little Red Rooster, God Bless Texas, The Kids These Days and Loving You Like I do are also great songs, good upbeat tunes with the kind of melodies we're used to from Mr. Heaton over the years.

Yes, the import price is steep but believe me, it's well worth it. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to...the latest incarnation of Paul Heaton   October 13, 2008
I discovered The Housemartins back in 1986 and they remain one of my all time favorite bands. The Beautiful South were great - for me, their first three albums were indisputably their best - gorgeous melodies paired with dark lyrics. Paul's first solo effort - the Biscuit Boy thing - didn't really rock my world (sorry, P.D.), didn't seem like a big enough departure from The Beautiful South (which, by 2001, was pretty much spent), plus Paul had virtually stopped using his wonderful, ethereal voice.

But this latest solo effort is absolutely fantastic. Mostly rockabilly, a couple of waltzes tossed in. Paul has recruited an incredible new band - his guitarist in particular is amazingly talented. Addictive melodies, acerbic wit, plus Paul is using his old Housemartins voice again, the one that vibrates glass. Welcome back, Paul. Can't wait for the next one!

5 out of 5 stars The Cross Eyed Rambler   October 23, 2008
Amazing CD! His best to date....I'm afraid I doubted Mr. Heaton's ability to outdo himself, but outdo is exactly what he has done. However, I am unable to find a favorite, it changes every time the next song starts...
