5 out of 5 stars FINALLY!   February 5, 2007

I have been waiting for this exact collection of the band's EP and LP for years. Aside from the infectious "Lawnchairs", many of the other tunes capture that bouncy, quirky synth dance sound. Reminds me very much of Devo, Pete Shelley, and at times, Missing Persons (with male vocal, of course) in the early 80s. The ONLY problem is, well, there is ONE song left off this collection from the "Moving Windows" LP!!! The song 'Paris' is nowhere to be found! Unfortunately, one of the tracks here had to be cut to make room for all the songs, but personally, I would have left off one of the versions of Lawnchairs, considering both mixes are available on numerous rhino new wave compilations. Now serious collectors are forced to keep their vinyl for that one song. Also note that the outro to "Buildings" has been left out--it was actually an outro to the entire "moving windows" LP--some spoken chatter by the band, sounding like aliens.

It's great to have some tracks that were not on either the EP and LP, which would be the songs Nightlife, Take Me, Hotel Room, She's Out There, Airline, and Raincoats & Silverware. Some of these are quite strong new wave songs--I sort of expected a bunch of rejects.

If you're looking for some new wave synthdance you missed in the 1980s, don't hesitate to grab this CD before it's gone. And thanks to Almacantar records for preserving the works of another great new wave band! Do you take requests???

4 out of 5 stars Great to finally see a body-of-work CD for these underrated synthpop pioneers   January 30, 2007

Though mostly known for their 1980 underground hit "Lawnchairs", the subsequent material from these synthpop pioneers also deserves a listen because it's actually quite good. Their sound is very much a product of its time (1980-1983), but that's hardly a bad thing. It's not only great that all of the tracks from their Digital Cowboy EP and their first and only proper LP, Moving Windows, have finally seen the light of day on CD, it's also icing on the cake to get the original (1980) and "re-recorded" (1981) versions of "Lawnchairs" in the same package.

3 out of 5 stars I'll Take the Good With the Bad   June 1, 2007

ODW's early work was great but their full-length album was a little too polished and nice for my liking. I used to have "Target For Life" on a video compilation and it remains a favourite song, even after 25 years.
These guys had a very interesting set-up. They used pre-recorded live drums on tape and played all those super-fast synth sequencers live - no arpeggiators, no sequencers or anything. For that they deserve a huge amount of respect but I grabbed this CD because what they did with their super-fast playing was often just as inspiring.

I'd give the early stuff, pre-album, 4 or even 4 1/2 stars but the album isn't worth more than 2 1/2 so it drags the overall rating down.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the best synthrock ever.   September 28, 2007
One of the best live synthrock acts ever. On record, they were hit-and-miss. Songs like Lawnchairs, Target For Life, Raincoats & Silverware, She's Out There, Nightlife, and Auto Music are marvelous. The original version of Lawnchairs ( both versions are on the disc ) is total dada pop genius. Later tracks like "Take Me" show just how far a band can stray from their original concept, when trying to jump on the MTV bandwagon. But I can't complain, because just about everything they've ever released on vinyl is included here. 22 songs = 80 minutes. So you can program your own "best of the best of" and have a killer time on your stereo. Modern bands like Hyperbubble and Mission Giant cite Our Daughters Wedding as a major influence, and have the haircuts to prove it! Listen to Our Daughters Wedding yourself, and be equally amazed.

5 out of 5 stars So excited to find this!!   September 30, 2007
I assume anyone who happens upon this was looking for it, but in case not- this is 80's alternative at it's classic best!!
