Amazon.com The Irish Tenors are an acquired taste that, it seems, nearly everyone has acquired. On Home for Christmas, John McDermott, Anthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan create a stirring seasonal follow-up to their extremely popular self-titled debut of Irish standards. On this disc, we get some of the best-loved holiday songs performed by the tenors in their trademark, Emerald Isle vocal style. Though the disc boasts a 78-piece orchestra, don't expect big-band arrangements on these tunes; if anything, these are intimate performances, with the tenors front-and-center. Each vocalist gets his own solo turns, but there are plenty of tunes featuring all three: "Joy to the World," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "O Holy Night," The Holy City," "Silent Night," and "Amazing Grace." If you still haven't had your fill of holiday music, check out McDermott's solo Christmas album from 1998, on which the vocalist performs an eclectic mix of standards and lesser-known holiday gems. --Jason Verlinde

Home for Christmas--A Masterpiece May 27, 2000 31 out of 31 found this review helpful
Like millions of others I discovered the Irish Tenors through PBS. I promptly began looking for anything else by these wonderful performers and found this Cd. The music is soul-satisfying as the Christmas music is all sacred (the closest to secular is "Good King Wenceslas"). The arrangements are in turn glorious, tender, and sweet. "Suo Gan" by McDermott, ''Sweet Little Jesus Boy" and "The Wexford Carol" by Kearns are highlights. Of the ensemble pieces, "Silent Night" and "Joy to the World" stand out. But the crowning selection is "The Holy City." We are wearing the album out and it's only May. We'll have to have another copy for Christmas!
A Masterpiece! November 6, 1999 23 out of 28 found this review helpful
This CD is truly a holiday jewel... I had the privelege of hearing the demo version in a small pub in Dublin in September of this year. More spectacular was meeting Anthony Kearns and John McDermott at the afore mentioned pub and getting a impromptu performance. They are not only wonderfully talented but genuine and delightful people. Buy both CD's - they are brilliant!
The Irish Tenors, Home for Christmas December 8, 1999 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
This is a powerful album, the best new Christmas CD I've heard in a long while. The songs are traditional, But performed and recorded with a sensitivity and emotion I have not heard in years. I played it three times the first night I brought it home!
Loved the Home For Christmas CD! December 2, 1999 20 out of 21 found this review helpful
Well, they've done it again. I was sure that I had hit a high when I saw the Lads perform live in Chicago this past June! What a magical evening for all of us at the United Center. The best was when Ronan Tynan brought the whole place to a pindrop stand-still during "The Town I Loved So Well"! The Christmas album gives the listener a real sense of the true meaning of the holiday! The selections are very good, with familiar and no-so-familiar tunes spaced evenly. John McDermott, Anthony Kearns and Ronan Tynan are in wonderful voice, as we have come to expect. I hope they make a video of this material and tour with it (back to Chicago, of course!) Knowing that these talented men have a following gives me hope for all of us! And if any of the Lads are reading this, a delicious home-made dinner is waiting for you in Illinois, for the asking. Just e-mail me (Jennifer at jlbesq@juno.com) with the date and you're on!
THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO WORDS................. October 20, 1999 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
to describe this wonderful CD. I suspected I, too, had Tenoritis with their first CD, but now I KNOW I have it. This CD is absolutely spectacular - three voices so beautiful, they truly do bring tears to my eyes. My favorite, however, is Anthony Kearns. He is an outstanding talent. His rendition of Ave Maria and Sweet Little Jesus Boy are next to perfection. The group singing O Holy Night is awesome and truly breathtaking. Every song, solo or in group just puts you in another world. I could just go on and on and on....I, too, cannot be objective where these three gents are concerned. Hope they do another concert video soon - very soon. Buy this CD- for sure, you won't be disappointed! You'll want to play it all year through, just not Christmas time.
