Amazon.com Ten of the 13 tracks here are from the great Machito and his orchestra, which featured Mario Bauza and Charlie Parker as well the lesser-known but legendary Chano Pozo and Jose Mangual. Dizzy Gillespie and His Orchestra, including Quincy Jones and Mongo Santamaria, contribute the 16-minute "Manteca Suite." Other highlights include the first-ever-recorded Cuban jam session--"Con Poco Coco" by Andre's All Star--and "Cubop City" by Howard McGhee and his Afro-Cuboppers (basically Machito and his orchestra). These historical recordings come from the third stage of Afro-Cuban jazz. However, the first stages are essentially unavailable, making this CD as close to the genesis of Afro-Cuban jazz as you can get. Styles may have changed since these recordings were fresh, but sophisticated arrangements, searing horns, and fiery percussion have no expiration dates. --Jonathan E.

Great mix of music August 26, 2003 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Hi Antonio Banderas sings with a beautiful voice and I loved Los Lobos version of the song Maria also I bought the CD for that song and I love it. The rest of the songs are very upbeat and you have to dance to them. Warm Regards: Cathy Alexander(NH)
Great Introduction to Afro-Cuban Intensity! August 12, 1998 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Movie??? I didn't even see it, but the tracks here are hard to beat. Tunes like "Mambo Caliente" and "Tea for Two" are the fuel of dance halls - go nuts!!! Besides being just purely energetic latin music, the disc serves as an adequate introduction to artists like Tito Puente, Arturo Sandoval, Celia Cruz, Mambo All-Stars, and even Antonio Banderas himself! Get ready to mambo in style with this CD.
It just doesn't get any better than this! February 24, 1999 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
What amazes me about this CD is the completeness of it....there isn't one misstep. "Beautiful Maria of My Soul" will haunt your dreams and the other cuts will make you want to get out of your seat and join in the fun. Antonio Banderas did a marvelous job with the "Maria" vocals....I'd like to hear more of him! This is a feel-good CD from beginning to end. Enjoy!
