Amazon.com essential recording
Even as greatest hits packages go, this is an utter gem. Every song is inspired, in a class of its own, whether the real version of "I Shot the Sheriff," the hymnlike "No Woman, No Cry," or the sheer joy of "Jamming." Even allowing that Marley never wrote any bad material, then Legend is still the creme de la creme, the heart and soul of the Jamaican people packed into one five-inch compact disc. He was unique, and the message of this record, more than any other, is that he died far too soon. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Legendary Anthology   April 9, 2003

The Bob Marley collection "Legend" does indeed make its case for Marley as a regge legend. More than any other artist, he helped bring regge music to mainstream audiences with his excellent songwriting and musicianship. He could be political without sounding preachy, and also wrote some of the sweetest love songs of any musical genre. Marley was popularized in America, of course, when Eric Clapton remade his "I Shot the Sheriff." Clapton's version is outstanding, but Marley's is equally so and is the one were the song's subtle political message is more overt.

Other outstanding tracks on the collection include the sweet "Three Little Birds," the ace peace and love song "One Love/People Get Ready," the straight up love songs "Is This Love" and "Stir It Up," the political rant of "Buffalo Soldier," the call to arms "Get Up Stand Up" and the rave-up "Jamming." Even among the lesser well known songs there is not a clunker or misstep in the mix.

Overall, a superior single disc anthology that establishes Bob Marley as one of the most important musicians of his era.

1 out of 5 stars Why I'm giving Bob one Star?   September 17, 2004

Imagine a Beatles compilation that only includes songs like: Lady Madonna, hello good bye, Yesterday, obladi oblada, yellow submarine, octopus garden and let it be.
That what's Legend is for Bob Marley
He was dead when Legend came out and he would have hated it to.

The songs are just a bunch of his most pop and Radio friendly stuff, songs like 3 little birds, Could you be loved or no woman no cry means nothing for the real fun.
In Lengend Marley is pictured as a pop artist, who sings mostly love songs, while in reality he had a strong politic and social ideology wich whoever produced this compilation make sure to buried it with songs like 3 little birds or could you be loved.

True Marley is on soul rebel, Rastman Vibartions, Catch a fire.
on songs like ambush in the night, running away or sun is shinning.
Don't bother with this album.

5 out of 5 stars A True Legend   December 30, 2002

This man WAS a legend. His music touched millions. He laid the groundwork for a lot of ska and reggae existing today, surviving an assination attempt and a country filled with unrest and confusion in the process. It truly was inspiring. His passing in 1981 was both tragic and untimely. Legend is a Best Of-album of sorts. It has a lot of his radio singles, his big hits, and a few treasures. Recommended to all fans of music, Jamaican music or otherwise. A stepping-stone into eventually collecting all of of his amazing work.
Truly it is: "...the heart and soul of the Jamaican people packed into one five-inch compact disc..."

Bob Marley's spirit lives on in his music.

4 out of 5 stars Classic tracks   August 10, 2002

Whether you are a reggae fan or not, you've got to love the works of Bob Marley, the man is a genius. This is an excellent compilation, every track a classic. From the party classic 'Jamming' to the universal anthem 'One Love/People Get Ready', the gorgeous, beautiful acoustic 'Redemption Song' and the tender 'No Woman No Cry', this CD is loaded with brilliant songs. It is really worth owning, one of the greatest Greatest Hits. However, as always, some essential Marley tracks are missing: 'Sun Is Shining', 'Rainbow Country', 'Lively Up Yourself', 'Kaya' and 'Trenchtown Rock'. Of these 5, only 2 are actually included on the One Love CD, the other Marley greatest hits, so competition is stiff, especially as the version of 'Redemption Song' is far superior and 'Satisfy My Soul' is left off One Love altogether.

Overall, this is a great Marley compilation to buy for any music fan at all, loaded with classics, but its worth buying other albums for several other tracks.

This CD is aptly named; Bob Marley's music has touched the world, and this compilation does even more justice to his brilliance than the original release of "Legend" -- better, crisper sound and "Exodus," in its complete form. With sweet songs like "Is This Love, "No Woman, No Cry" (a recording of the famous live performance), the empowering "Get Up Stand Up," and the infectious "Jamming," there is a song for nearly any mood.

I have taken this CD with me everywhere: to the store, on short trips, and on trips overseas. Whether you're on an airplane or sitting at home, whether you're happy or depressed, chances are one of these songs will speak to you.

The old "Legend" was great, but this reissue is better. The CD contains a nice mix of his songs, and it will no doubt remain a popular and well-respected album.
