Album Description 2008 release from this fast-rising artist who inhabits the musical hybrid tradition of Pop-Reggae performers such as Finlay Quaye and Lily Allen. Hailing from North London, Natty grew up surrounded by an eclectic mix of sounds from Neil Young to Marvin Gaye and it was while working in Sphere Studios in Battersea that he first discovered his talent. A gifted musician, poet and lyricist, Natty's soulful roots, acoustic guitar and references to dance culture make him an artist not to be missed. 12 tracks including the singles 'Cold Town' and 'July'. Atlantic.

Summery, laid-back grooves. August 12, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
It might be a little too late to fully benefit from the summery vibes and sunkissed melodies of this album by Natty. "July", written as a love letter to the glorious month, captures the carefree nature of the season, but things get a little more serious elsewhere. This charismatic, dreadlocked 24-year-old Londoner is musically wise beyond his years, having worked as a studio engineer for years before releasing his debut. He would like to start a fire under politically apathetic youth. In which case his musical vehicle seems an odd choice: light reggae with an acoustic flavour and conversational lyrics, an easy-on-the-ear cross between Jack Johnson and Lily Allen. This experience is reflected in a clean sound that has reggae at its roots but branches out beyond its confines. The first single from the album, "Cold Town", is quintessential Natty -- an ebullient rhythm and pretty melody undercut by dark lyrics about a serial killer: the politically charged song was written after Natty fell out of love with his home city. The clean guitars and finger-tapping percussion lend melodic songs a sweet vibe, like something you might hear round a campfire. But there is soulful depth to his more fretful material (the tale of paternal abandonment in "Say Bye Bye") that suggests richer and rawer dimensions to Natty than are first apparent. But mostly, Natty's music is a cheerful affair, more likely to inspire a dance step than savage introspection. Musically, Natty's influences are pretty straightforward - Bob Marley is obviously top of the pile - but this newcomer's song structure and flow prove that he's not a mere copyist. The gentle ditties of "Stoned On You" and "She Loves Me" both stand out, but it's "Coloured Souls", with a classic reggae guitar motif, which really shines on this solid debut.
