4 out of 5 stars Grant TestifIes to a "Relentless" God on New CD   February 13, 2008

Prime Cuts: Make a Way, In Better Hands, Safe

No album title has ever been more appropriate. After 3 years in the making and numerous delays, this multi-Dove Award has persisted and "Relentless" is indeed worth the wait. Instead of reinforcing misogyny for a quick buck, the songs on this new disc try to discern God's presence while digging deep into the molasses of life's complexities. In fact, the songs are so carefully chosen that they are woven around the theme of trusting God right through life's tribulations. Vocally, Grant has honed her chops to perfection knowing when to let loose to belt for those high octaves as well as when to be simmer with affecting restrains. Just like her previous effort "Awaken," there is a right balance of those power ballads and uptempo sizzlers. However, not all is status quo. With husband Bernie Herms on the helm, there is a rawer electronically rock edge especially on the rowdier material that invites comparisons with Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Barlowgirl and even Plumb.

For fans who have found comfort in some of her sky scraping power ballads such as "Held" and "Home," there are four selections here to indulge. Already a number 1 smash is the lead single "Better Place." Cut out perfectly as a radio darling, this ballad with a rousing chorus is testimonial to the truth that to God's protection in difficult times. From the soft horn ambiance exploding into a full orchestral anthem, "Safe" a Plumb-co-write, rivets the powerful message of finding solace in God right into the heart. With just the accompaniment of a piano and cello, "Make a Way" is easily one of those signature ballads that make you listen for each syllable with anticipation. Further, Grant's breathy and restrained vocals bring out a desperation that hunkers right into God's throne room that is just pure worshipful. Comparisons bound when it comes to "Our Hope Endures" and Grant's signature hit "Held," as they are penned by Chrisa Well and both tunes deal with trusting God in tough situations. However, "Our Hope Endures" is so compellingly beautiful that it's worth hearing even though it echoes "Held" in many places.

Kelly Clarkson immediately comes to mind with the raw electronic r&b kick of the opener "I Will Not Be Moved." Drums are in Full Monty on "Wonderful Life," accompanying a melody that is as instanteous as lightning. While the bluesy horn-led "So Long" has a Stevie Wonder r&b ring to it, as Grant puts on a Gospel-esque tribute to the Holy Spirit's regenerating power. Tagged as a "bonus track" is the Getty classic "In Christ Alone" -- this time round, the oft-covered hymn gets a Grant original touch towards the end with some rousing guitar riffs.

However, despite the presence of CCM's superstar Matthew West's co-writing effort, "Back at My Heart" sounds quite standard fare rock. The same can be said of "Let Go" and "Perfect People." Nevertheless, the highlight of any Natalie Grant CD is here ballads. Her consummate vocals, the way she vocally builds upon the song, and the well-chosen and insightful lyrics are reasons why Grant today still remains one of CCM's most viable artists.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational To The Core   April 5, 2008

This Cd was well worth the money. You won't be sorry you bought this one. As you listen to several of the songs, the lyrics makes you sense the close relationship with God that Natalie has with Him. If you're having a not so good day, by the time you've finished playing this Cd, you will view things in a better perspective. The power ballards such as "In Better Hands", and "I Will Not Be Moved" gives you comfort leaving you inspired to perservere through anything. The song "In Better Hands" is just beautiful and edifys your spirit. Natalie's powerful worshipful voice brings out the songs in a way giving you impressions that she sounds a little like Amy Grant and Kelly Clarkson but still unique all in her own. I will be a fan of her music for life and hope this artist continues bringing us many more songs like these for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Grant proves deft at different styles   February 19, 2008

In "Relentless," Natalie Grant displays artistic growth and a smooth ability to handle a variety of musical styles. She delivers touching lyrics and a soft sound in "In Better Hands" - but the song transitions into a powerful bridge that reminds you why Grant has the best female voice in Christian music. In "I Will Not Be Moved" and "Wonderful Life," Grant's songs sound similar to a Kelly Clarkson-style pop rock tune, but never does she overdo it. This is probably the most mature, eclectic Natalie Grant album yet.
