A must for all Spearhead fans September 19, 2008 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I can appreciate that this may not be his best recording. Personally I like "Stay Human" and "Yell Fire" and I had a hard time imagining how he was going to top or follow "Yell Fire". A lot of the same influences are on this recording - almost like it picks up where that left off. Still - there is enough great music on this to make it worthwhile - and every time I listen to it I find something new to appreciate. Michael Franti is the modern day revolutionary song writer of our time - just like the Clash were in the 80's. I think his message is beautiful and thought provoking. This is worth buying for "Nobody Right, Nobody Wrong" alone.
Spearhead's BEST Album by far! September 11, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Michael Franti and Spearhead have outdone them selves with this album produced in Jamaica! Rockin fun songs full of love and anger about injustice and a message of peace that sound awesome!!!
This album is worth buying! I love almost all the songs which is rare with any album or band! I don't listen to much reggae, this is so much more than that. You can even hear even some Eminem influence in the song Future.
If you like Spearhead or Michael Franti at all, you should definitely pick this one up... you will be impressed!!!
If only radio would play it, instead of the JUnK music thats empty and lame! All Rebel Rockers is the best CD I have bought since Rage Against the Machine debuted!
Kingston Flavor! September 9, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've been hearing some of these tracks on the radio for the past couple of weeks and have been anxiously waiting for the release today. Starts out with a much more traditional early-Reggae sound, then mixes in a bit of hip hop and a more familiar acoustic Franti/Spearhead sound. It's a little bit different twist upon first listen, but if you're a Franti fan, you'll like it! Maybe leans more towards "Yell Fire" or "I Know I'm Not Alone" stuff, than say..."Stay Human", plus the new Kingston feel. Works great for me!
Good, but couldn't possibly live up to Yell Fire! September 15, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I wouldn't expect Spearhead to put out an album that wasn't heartfelt and intelligent, and this album is both. I didn't for a second expect them to make an album as good as Yell Fire!, which comes pretty close to being a perfect album for this genre. There's a lot less anger and urgency in this album, appealing instead a little more to dance grooves and more introspective lyrics. It feels a little more produced than Yell Fire, which takes away slightly from the feel of "no drum machines this is all organic." This album feels a little less organic than previous releases. They may or may not used drum machines, but they often use a drum sound that sounds a bit too cold and manufactured with a bit too much reverb. While Yell Fire! had more of a rock feel, this album has a pretty strong Reggae feel. Given the title, I was expecting something different, more of a scathing call to action. The Future does take on this theme though. Of course this is a great album, which I knew it would be after hearing some of these songs live. One downside to creating a masterpiece like Yell Fire! is that it's almost impossible to ever top it.
Another excellent release from Franti and Spearhead September 14, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Disregard the 4 stars. I initially gave this CD that rating based on a couple of listens -- and, hey, compared with Yell Fire! it's just not as great. However, I took a trip to Phoenix (a 2-hour drive) and forgot to bring any CDs, so this was all I had. After listening to it for four hours (about 5 times in all), I've changed my mind and believe this IS worth FIVE stars, but there's no way to change my rating.
So, I did the next best thing: I came here to edit my review and upgrade to FIVE STARS in the text. So, I erased my previous comments and added this. If you like Michael Franti and Spearhead, you want this. While Yell Fire! was very political and cohesive, this is less strident and angry. The groove is definitely here, and if you give it a few listens you'll like it as much as anything these guys have done. It's great music, so ignore the 4 stars and pretend they are five.
