What a return to form for Rundgren! Arena's baker's dozen, one-word-named tunes are from another time entirely: thoughtful, intense and expertly crafted rock songs that straddle the line between pop and prog. Rundgren continues to make music that pushes the envelope of his best work, regardless of current musical trends. The great songwriter and genius producer of Cheap Trick, the Runaways, Meat Loaf, Hall and Oates, and XTC is neither resting on his laurels nor performing his greatest hits at the Kansas state fair--although he did assume Rix Ocasek’s mantle with the New Cars, but that's something else entirely. The album title is ironic. Music like this hasn't been an arena draw in twenty-plus years. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description
Recorded in Todd's current home state of Hawaii, 'Arena' is yet another notable addition to Rundgren's remarkable career as a performer, songwriter, and producer. The album showcases his unique songwriting style and sonically captures the essence and energy of arena rock with bombastic, guitar-driven tunes like 'Mountaintop', 'Strike' and 'Mad', while the anthemic song 'Mercenary', transports you to a stadium with its epic chorus, with 'How Do You Like Me Now?' resounding to every seat in the house.

5 out of 5 stars todd rundgren "ARENA"   January 6, 2009
I have allways enjoyed his music but if you like streight ahead rock you should buy this cd. The lyrics are brilliant and he plays and sings everything on this killer cd

4 out of 5 stars another one for true todd fans   January 3, 2009
First off, I would never try to convince anyone to become a fan of Todd Rundgren. I love his work but it is not an acquired taste. His music, often quirky, has always resonated with me.Arena is for the established Todd fan only.I have listened to this c.d. three times and am liking it more and more.I fear however that the uninitiated will not give Todd the same latitude as an already established fan.To the uninitiated I say look to "Hermit Of Mink Hollow" or "Runt. The Ballad Of Todd Rundgren" as entry points to the extensive catalog of this artist. To the established fan I say purchase "Liars" first and if you like what you hear dive right into "Arena".

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Todd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   December 22, 2008
Just saw Todd in concert Saturday (12/20/08) and he performed a major portion of this album and it was fantastic. After hearing this album in concert I just had to have it. Todd started out with some vintage tunes like I Saw The Light, and covers like Lunitic Fringe. Just a great night from start to end. If you get a chance catch this tour and you will not be disappointed with the "Arena" segment, truly vintage Todd rising up again. As always Todd's humor fills the gaps between songs!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars WERE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD! THE WIZARD NAMED TODD.   December 9, 2008

an elpee's worth of toons indeed! ARENA is one of TODD'S best, and thats SAYING SOMETHING. a solid effort from start to finish. it's great that an artist that has been making music as long as TODD has puts out an album of this caliber. HEAVY METAL KIDS REJOICE!

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs Period   November 28, 2008
Let's start with how people listen to music. In the car, in the front room, etc. I would only review a CD after repeated listenings with good headphones and as a long time Todd listener I love this CD. It may take a sec to get used to the sound, you might think a flashier drummer would help, or longer guitar solos. Then when you really get the words and how the words go with the music you say these are great songs. Todd is the Miles Davis of rock- constantly reinventing himself and this retro-re-invention is one of the best. I'm not afraid to learn...
