Aggressive, then upbeat, then tragic, what more could you ask for from a CD single. A "must own" for fans of Skinny Puppy / FLA December 29, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just as the Cyberaktif single "Nothing Stays" leans towards the Skinny Puppy side in terms of composition, the "Temper" single leans more towards the Front Line Assembly side. So much so, in fact, that both "Temper (Extended Mix) and "Meltdown (Parody)" sound more like FLA songs which have been "remixed" by Skinny Puppy and "Dream Needle", while more balanced between the two forces at work, still leans towards the FLA side with it's deliberate, in your face synth bass and it's high end synth tinkling (although the strings sound like pure Puppy).
"Temper", while a good track, does get a little monotonous in this 7 minute version, whereas the nearly 8 minute "Meltdown" bounces along so exuberantly you might even hit repeat a couple of times. "Meltdown (Parody)" is, in fact, a "reworking" (more than a remix) of the Cyberaktif LP track "Paradiessiets" which featured vocals, piano, and effects by the legendary Blixa Bargeld from Einsturzende Neubauten. While definitely cut from the same cloth, "Meltdown" stretches out into an up-beat techno dance number made even more funky by Leeb's heavily effected and vocoded vocals which are delivered in a sing-song kind of way (as opposed to his standard aggro demon roar). The track also features long sections of dialogue from the 1988 horror film "The Unholy". "Dream Needle" is actually pretty cool for a b-side. It has a great bass and some haunting Puppy-esque strings. The last 2 minutes sound like the tragic and haunted score to a lost 70's film and will make you wish the song would go on for as long as the extended mix of "Temper".
Get it, you won't regret it.
Perfect Cyberaktif sampler February 14, 2005 This single is a brilliant extension of Cyberaktif's full LP Tenebrae Vision. For those who aren't familiar with Cyberaktif, they are Bill Leeb (of Front Line Assembly and an original member of Skinny Puppy), and cEvin Key and Dwayne Goettel (both from Skinny Puppy). If you want a sample of their music before going out and buying Tenebrae Vision, this single doubles as a well-rounded sampler. Or, if you already own Tenebrae vision, the song Dream Needle alone is worth the purchase.
