I love this album, love it. It's a big organic and wonderful adventure. Not very fun to listen to whilst driving though. Also, cats are great too.
once again cEvin key takes it to the nExt level... July 1, 1999 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
at first, you won't know what to think of it... but the more you explore it, the more you will understand the brilliance within the music cEvin key. his music does take effort in understanding, but it's an experience worth having. a mesmerizing trip into a realm of sound, space and complexity in which all boundaries are overwhelmed and the works of a creativ genius emerge out of silence and emptyness. but don't be upset, if you do not find this listening to the record for the first time. trust me, it's there, and once it has exposed itself to you, you will not be able to live without it.
Little cEvin and the Wolf March 17, 2001 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Ha, cEvin did good job here. To be frank, and arty-zation and intellectuali-zation apart, you will need around 220 listening before being accustomed to... a masterpiece. Off with pretentious analysis, this record is full of blahhh and ploks but is completely entertaining. It's the "No sleep til Hammersmith" (motorhead) of electronic tweaking. Except for Genesis P-Oridge, who begins to sound (and be used) like some cement to intellectual music, the rest is real pleasure. If you do, like me, listen to a lot of more "listenable" things (er, Boulez), go for this one. Big fun for everyone. Ok, we can't dance on it (except if you don't care looking like a abnormal). Also : don't search for any influence for Peter and the Wolf, other than the cover and (maybe) the end of the quite malicious first song.
Eh... August 16, 2001 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
Cevin key's "Music For Cats" is merely mediocre... It takes a lot of patience to enjoy this album. It contains a lot of boring continous electronic sounds of nothing. It's not like "Download",or "Doubting Thomas". It's just a very dull boring album. sometimes even aggravating at times. Thankfully his follow up "The Ghost of Each Room" is much much better...
music is noise is music... December 6, 2001 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
MUSIC FOR CATS is the rough, edited chaos that is the precursor to THE GHOST OF EACH ROOM, the 2nd in cevin Key's trilogy. the sounds are compiled from 3 years or recordings featuring Key's solo work, as well as collaborations and jams with other artists, such as D.R. GOETTEL, MARK SPYBEY, and GENESIS P-ORRIDGE.
while the pastiche process cEvin utilized might suggest a disjointed final product, MUSIC FOR CATS is surprisingly cohesive--although it may take you a few listens to appreciate this. i recommend experiencing the recording in it's entirety, instead of skipping from track to track; if you do, you will find moments of sad beauty, extreme noise, strange comedy, psychological and philosophical exploration, as well as some monotony and confusion. but it is these latter moments of "imperfection"--that seem to happen at just the right time--that purr-FECT MUSIC FOR CATS. it is certainly "of this world, not of the next"--though you might wonder....
if you want something more polished and easy to digest, try THE GHOST OF EACH ROOM.
