Synthpop/futurepop dreck November 20, 2005 11 out of 19 found this review helpful
This album is nothing more than a catalogue of all of the synthpop/futurepop dreck that has been masking itself as goth and industrial music since the late 1990's. Having heard these bands played in clubs I can honestly say that I couldn't tell one from another. Why? Because ALL of them sound exactly the same. They have the same exact beats and same exact angst driven lyrics. I can see why some teens would like them, but if you are above the age of 30,like I am,they will most likely annoy you and make you want to bang your head against a wall.
To those of you who have been calling this music goth please think again. In the 1980's there was a clear distinction between synthpop(Depeche Mode,Book Of Love,etc...) and goth(Christian Death,Sisters Of Mercy). Please don't confuse the two, because they are not the same.
An incredible collection of the new wave in goth music September 7, 2003 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
I was perusing the used cd bins today when I came across this three cd compilation. The second I saw the list of songs on the compilation, I knew I had to buy it. The first two cds are just thrown together while the third disc is a non-stop mix cd by DJ RiB (as in Razed in Black). I am a huge fan of bands like VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk, and Wolfsheim. A lot of the songs are remixes too. Another reason for buying this box set was that I always wanted to hear what Claire Voyant, L'Ame Immortelle sounded like. Needless to say they rocked my socks off. I absolutely loved "The Truth Behind" (L'Ame Immortelle) and "Majesty" (Claire Voyant). I definitely want to look into acquiring cds by each band very soon. I also had to hear the Apoptygma Berzerk remix of Switchblade Symphony's "Sweet". Normally I am used to listening to Switchblade Symphony at a much slower, more trip hoppy pace but Apoptygma Berzerk really cranks out the energy in this song and gives it an added boost of energy. Fear Cult does a really interesting take on Blur's classic "Boys & Girls". I certainly wasn't disappointed in the Icon of Coil remix of VNV Nation's "Genesis". Icon of Coil did an amazing job at remixing one of my favorite VNV Nation songs. I certainly wasn't disappointed with Funker Vogt's "Cold War". I just love that band to pieces. Other favorite songs include Pax's "Catch My Fire", The Birthday Massacre's "Video Kid", and Spahn Ranch's "Remnants". "The remix cd was amazing as well. The perfect cd to listen to on a Saturday night before hitting the nightclubs. I loved "This Is Neo-Goth". This 3-cd compilation showcases the best of today's hottest goth/industrial/EMB acts around.
this is NOT industrial music November 9, 2005 7 out of 19 found this review helpful
i have been listening to industrial since the early 90's, skinny puppy, thrill kill, REVCO, and i am still heavily into industrial, android lust, i, parasite, ect. I bought this CD to maybe check out some enw industrial bands, man was i suprised at what they are passing off as industril, this is nothing more than the cheesiest, rave till dawn, K-mart clearance bin techno i have ever herd, with vocals on top, this is NOT INDUTSRIAL music, industrial music is dark and noisy and intense, not trance with vocals. If you are looking for some real industrial, email me, i will point you in the right direction, if you are new to industrial DO NOT BUY THIS CD, it is not industrial.
Define Neo-Goth? February 23, 2005 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
What is Neo-Goth? I think that people are forgetting that "goth music" does not just mean death rock. It could be mope rock like Morrissey or Bauhaus, or it could be energetic and angry like Apoptygma Berzerk. This album is called "Neo-Goth" because I am guessing that Cleopatra records (the company that distributed this album)wanted a compliation of energetic dance-floor goth. However when they realized that they had too many favorites their list was split up into two box sets: "This is Neo Goth", and "This is Industrial". To me, this album says it all. If you are a fan of VNV, Assamblage 23, and Apop, then buy this album!
Don't skip out on this great compilation. October 17, 2003 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is the compilations to beat all other compilations. It's well worth the money. All of the songs are top notch by some of the best artists of the genre. Even if you have a lot of these songs already, you must get this for all the great remixes (Cruxshadows remixed by Apoptygma Berzerk is DIVINE). This isnt something you can live without. The first two discs are some great songs, and the thrid disc is an amazing non stop mix by DJ RiB. (who does great live DJ events too). Don't pass this up!
