A decent release by FV, my expectations were much higher November 4, 2002 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Ok, first let me get this out of the way. i own over 300 EBM/industrial/synthpop/etc. cds, so i know how to rate the quality of an electronic music release. i give this cd 2 and a half stars. why only 2 and a half you ask? well i own every other FV release sans code 7477 and thanks for nothing, and this cd fell way short of my high expectations after their best cd, Maschine Zeit (yes, trust me its their best) and the superb Execution Tracks and We Came To Kill and Killing Time Again. i got a preview of their new single This World on a 2cd EBM compilation and thought it was good but not spectacular. to my dismay, that would turn out to be the best? song on the new album Survivor :( Survivor has nowhere near the catchiness and utter brilliance of Maschine Zeit and maybe a third of the energy of Execution Tracks and We Came To Kill. gone are the well written choruses and the synth-line hooks that made FV great. some people compare this cd to the double EP "T" but the 4 new songs on T are better than the 2 or maybe 3 that are on Survivor. Now, all bad mouthing aside, if this were FV's debut cd, i would have given it 3 and a half or 4 stars. but honestly i expected nothing less of a masterpiece from such an experienced band. maybe we have seen the beginning of the end of Funker Vogt, but only time will tell. i highly reccomend Maschine Zeit and Execution tracks. check those out first before buying this cd. also buy the tragic hero single released on the now defunct zoth ommog label. goodluck finding it! :)
Best Funker Vogt for a DJ November 28, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Funker Vogt really left an impression with me with Survivor, as both a fan of industrial music and a DJ I find Survivor to be by far their best release. The quality and production on Survivor is by far better than any previous Funker Vogt release as well, overall a incredible electronic industrial type masterpiece. As a DJ you will find the following tracks to pack your dance floor:This World (my personal favorite) Final Thrill Date of Expiration Prisoners of War I highly recommend this release for fans of ebm & industrial as well as DJ's.
Yet another electro masterpiece by Funkervogt October 22, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Funkervogt's new album, Survivor, continues their legacy as one of the best electronic industrial bands ever to hit the scene. While some of the later songs in the album seem to lack the inspiration that was present in Maschine Zeit and Execution Tracks, it still packs plenty of high energy soon-to-be club hits. Hightlights include This World, History, Final Thrill, and a couple of tracks with excellent use of electric guitar like Fallen Man and Red Queen. Now some fans have become disappointed in Funkervogt's decision to water down the distortion in their vocals. I, too was skeptical at first...but now I kind of like being able to hear the lyrics (at least it's a deviation from the staticy vocals heard on their first album, Thanks For Nothing). If you listened to the new tracks on the T double disc set, you have a good idea of how the lyrics sound here. Most songs on Suvivor stick with the theme of war and politics, but there are a few that harken back to their older albums with themes of their personal life, ect. With many industrial/ebm bands now diluting into synthpop, it's great to see a band like Funkervogt sticking to their roots and still putting out aggressive material. Whether you are a long-time fan or an electronic industrial newbie, Survivor is a great album to add to your collection.
[sad] and effortless October 29, 2002 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Funker Vogt stopped making decent hard hitting music after Execution Tracks. Although I liked Machine Zeit, the drums and hard-hitting crashes and slams were EQ'd really low and didn't stand out in most tracks. It had some excellent songs on it, but it was starting to evolve Funker Vogt into a pop music genre in which Survivor is in now. Survivor isn't hard at all. None of the songs make you want to just kick some [butt] like Thanks for Nothing, WCTK and Execution Tracks. The beats in Survivor are all the same, and I'm so sick of the members getting lazy and using NOTHING BUT SAMPLES over and over again. There's no breakdowns like before, nor are there any crazy pace changes in BPM. It sounds like American club music with a guy who can't really sing. It's cool without distortion sometimes, but it gets boring. The static sound with overdrive and distortion was awesome. The only thing that would make Survivor a great CD is if Funker Vogt's next EP starting gradually converting back to the old ways, and the next full length sounded like Execution Tracks or Thanks for Nothing. Then you can say "Survivor was just a little change of pace, nothing to worry about. The new one is harder again." I hope that's the case.
It is different than their past, still great though. November 7, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Survivor is Funker Vogt's first full length release in two years and it was about time. Over the last couple of years we had only heard remixes and other limited releases from the band, and all the fans always wanted more.Survivor really is a different sound for Funker Vogt, although they intended to stay to their original roots, hence the cd name Survivor. The sound is definately different, it is closest to Maschine Zeit but still is a different sound and far from Execution Tracks. This is their first release where they actually use electric guitars and I really like how they use them, note: they're used in "Compulsions" and "Red Queen". In the past they have always been known for songs about war particularily, although they still do this, they also have songs that are more emotion based as well. Funker Vogt really is my favorite band, but this is their first release where I actually enjoy listening to every song on the cd. I particularily enjoy "History", "Compulsions", and "Faster Life". "Date of Expiration" is also very good but we heard this song, or a version of it, on the Date of Expiration single release so it wasn't anything new. Overall, I would have to say that this is their best release yet. I would give it a 4.5 out of 5.
