Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
My Dying Bride, from West Yorkshire, England, formed in the summer of 1990, and after only six months of writing together released the "Towards The Sinister" demo. Shortly after, they recorded and released their first 7" single "God Is Alone" for the French label Listenable Records. The single sold out quickly, and their name was spread throughout the underground, eventually bringing them to the attention of Peaceville Records.

My Dying Bride has become the leading light of doom metal since their debut album As the Flower Withers was released on Peaceville Records back in 1992 to universal acclaim. With their heavy atmospherics they carved a huge worldwide following over the years and remain greatly respected today as one of the pinnacles of the genre, as well as one of the most instantly distinguishable metal bands.

A Line of Deathless Kings is the ninth album from the band, and is their first new material featuring drummer John Bennett from fellow Yorkshire doomsters, The Prophecy. From the titanic opener "To Remain Tombless" to the closing notes of the mighty "The Blood, The Wine, The Roses," My Dying Bride once again show that they remain leaders of their respective field of sorrow-filled epic tales narrated to a cacophony of crushing doom metal. The looming menace of vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe is perfectly backed up by a solid wall of apocalyptic guitar.

Recorded at Academy Studios with engineering duties handled by long-time collaborator and producer, Mags, A Line of Deathless Kings was mixed at The Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire and mastered at the infamous Abbey Road Studios in London.

My Dying Bride remains a strongly active and popular live band, especially on the festival circuit, with major festivals this year including Graspop in Belgium and Summer Breeze in Germany. They have enjoyed many high profile shows throughout their career, the most notable being their tour with Iron Maiden in 1995.

5 out of 5 stars "Entering the dark, so close, entwined"   November 17, 2006

Before this album was released I read scary things about My Dying Bride experimenting with their sound. Needless to say, I was a bit worried. My worry was all wasted energy. MDB have brought the menace back into their compositions with "A Line of Deathless Kings." After the Gothic beauty and despair of their last album, "Songs of Darkness, Words of Light", which was virtually devoid of Death Metal leanings, their new release brings back the aggression, mixing it with Doom and Gothic Metal....and what a difference it has made. I did enjoy their last album, don't get me wrong, but without the aggressive attitude it didn't demand to be heard. But here the riffs are raw as open wounds and there are definitely more hooks to be had and savored. I found myself playing air guitar on more than just a few songs. The only track that doesn't quite work for me is "Deeper Down" which has the cleaner vocals mixed with Death/Doom riffing. It would have worked much better with the snarling or growling vocals, the cleaner vocals are better suited to the epic Doom sections that mesmerize through lengthy repetition of mood and atmosphere. The lyrics are as depressing and dark as ever with some even reading as poetry. "The Blood, The Wine, The Roses" is an excellent example of this where the words convey a diabolical story of seduction and eventual damnation; an explosion of Death Metal ends this song as the protagonist becomes one of the damned obsessed with bloody revenge. Sweet! It should be mentioned that this album works best as a whole, so time should be set aside to listen to it in its entirety for the full effect to be absorbed. So turn off the lights and let these legendary masters of Doom embrace you with dark, leathery wings. Thank you.

3 out of 5 stars Another Slab of Dispair....   December 15, 2006

Looks like the MDB machine might be running out of steam. The album starts out well with lots of potential. Opener To Remain Tombless is a classic song everyone will know and love. Chugging riff, impact drumming, and then clean vocal chorus. L'amour Detruit is a slower song which builds and builds with a lot of wailing from our favorite singer, which then transcends into a very nice bass mid-section. MDB fans will like this song too.

When you get to song three and then song four, you start realizing how 'samey' the songs are beginning to sound. Am I getting tired of the sound, or is this album lacking vigor and variation (unlike the Dreadful Hours, Songsof... which varied)?

Yes, I have listened to it several times, and my view hasn't changed. MDB fans like me will still like this album, but it seems to have a tired sound to it.

4 out of 5 stars They're Back in Line   January 13, 2007

I've followed this band since 'Turn loose the Swans', and it's been an up-and-down ride. The last two albums, 'dreadful hours' and 'songs of darkness...' did not 'click' with me. While they weren't drastically different stylistically, the songwriting seemed uninspired, leaving the tracks with no hooks to hold my attention. I'm glad to say that 'a line of deathless kings' doesn't suffer from that problem. The songs on the first half do an especially good job of holding my attention and being easily distinguishable from one another. And while MDB always has a tendency to fall back into their death metal formula, such occurences are few on this disc. Some fans may be disappointed in the lack of death growls and churning beats, but personally I'm happy to see the band minimize their useage of the death metal tricks, as I consider it to be a weak pointof their older material. Anyways, fans of the band should be at least content with this album; it may not become your favorite MDB album, but it's certainly comparable to much of the bands atalog, and their best since 'light at the end of the world' IMO

5 out of 5 stars Deathless..   October 30, 2006

This long awaited MDB release of 2006. Here, the british Godfathers of Doom once again proves that they rule the genre. Fans will appreciate that the band stay true to the style that was once created by the same people. AODK will not surprise neither disappoint any listener. At a glance, the record may seem a bit shallow compared to the dark and hauting Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light. Well, dig Deeper Down, the songs will grow more and more as you play the record on repeat. I did, and still am. 5 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another slice of despair...   November 3, 2006

If you know of this band then buy this album...end of story. I won't go into all the sordid details as some reviewers seem to enjoy the sound, not of their own voice, but rather their fingers tapping the keyboard. Anyway, there is not a song on here I don't like but highly recommend "I Cannot Be Loved", "L'Amour Detruit", and "And I Walk With Them". This is My Dying Bride at the top of their game, again.

If you don't know this band and are randomly stumbling around Amazon looking for something new to listen to then buy this album...end of story. You will have all the time in the world to backtrack their catalogue after ALODK drags you mumbling incoherently yet bleakly along all the misery you've never even known existed despite how wretched you may think your life is at the moment. That's one of the things I love about this band. I can think life has burdened me beyond my ability to ever reach above an old man's stooped frame and then I throw in some MDB and realize my life is okay compared to what Aaron is wailing about and out I go into another dreary November knowing nothing is so bad as all of that. Blah, blah, blah. BUY IT!!
