Deathcore... November 13, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is another release in the growing "deathcore" genre. Basically it takes brutal death metal and adds hardcore-style breakdowns. Whitechapel in particular are highly technical and definitely brutal... but the songs don't really stick. I'd imagine they get the crowd worked into a frenzy live, but it just isn't quite enough to elevate them over the hordes of similar-minded acts popping up on a daily basis recently.
This sounds like the Doom EP. November 21, 2007 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
Seriously, it is unbelievable how many times this sound has been rehased in just a few years. The sound was fairly stale in 2005 let alone now. You have all the familiar elements: metalcore vocals mixed with death metal gutterals, breeeee's, hardcore breakdowns, generic palm-muted riffs juxtaposed by repetitive tremolo picking, and just a hint of At The Gates worship. Many will love this, I don't.
don't listen to the negative reviewers December 23, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Whitechapel is a very talented death/grind band. they are a bit more brutal than most of the other bands in the deathcore scene but also more origional. pick this up along with suicide silence, oblige, and all shall perish.
one of the better deathcore albums December 13, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
i understand the many sceptics of "deathcore", i admittedly am a fan of the genre, and i find this album to be one of the better recent releases. the breakdowns are great (but not overdone), and the vocals are sooo brutal. the technicality of the playing is also pretty good.
Disregard negative comments -- This is a great album. June 29, 2008 This album is easily one of the heaviest in the deathcore genre.
The songs are well-crafted, the breakdowns punishing, and Jack The Ripper inspired lyrics are truly disturbing. The vocals sound great on here as well, while not as varied as All Shall Perish or Despised Icon, comparable to Suicide Silence, but better.
I'm all for brutality when it comes to music, and this truly delivers the entire way through. It steers away from wankier moments like the ones on Price Of Existence, and not as scatterbrained like Ills Of Modern Man. In fact, it's quite focused in scope, and while calling it a concept album is somewhat of a stretch, it definitely plays that way.
In a genre where similar sounds are commonplace, this is one album that I haven't gotten sick of after a week. It holds up to repeated listens, and remains one of my favorites.
